@@johntisbury you could replace it with a modern condensing boiler & wait a few years for more technology to come along. Personally I am still not convinced about air to air for heating cooling in the summer yes . People who have had it don’t have hole house and run it at 18 degrees to keep the running cost down.But I bet when they were running there old heating system it was run at a higher temp

@@glyn1782 we want to stop using gas. We have a heat loss survey booked in in March, we will make the final decision once we know what the house needs to maintain a temp at -2°C outside.

Hi John did wonder if I had missed your last update during our move and settling in in Norfolk. Hope all will get better for your family. No stats from me as no solar here yet😥. We did bring our two powerwalls and gateway with us which have now been refitted and being recharged by E7, we are having to manually push the E7 change over each night as there appears to be a communication issue with the gateway. Getting in quotes for solar, Mixergy tank and ASHP so an expensive year to come.

Hi Mark, glad to hear you are moved in and settled. No solar, that's a major change for you. Tough time to look for quotes too as most installers have a long waiting list. At lease you have your Powerwalls in and working, despite the glitch in the E7 switching. Looks like you will have lots of learning and enjoyment getting to grips with your new setup once it is installed sometime later this year. Thanks for watching and your message about things getting better for us.

Hi John, great to hear and see your update, I weas wondering if I had missed it! Now my stats for December, again, the E/W roof split of our 7.56kWh SolarPV, is very low in the winter, 95.4kWh, Kia E Niro and ASHP adding to increased usage for home at 2046.9kWh, with my net grid use at 1987.9kWh. My ASHP used 951kWh andI have discovered how bad our insulation is, with a thermometer placed against a wall is 4c less than when moved 1 metre into the room. We run the ASHP to provide 18c all day for whole house and drop by 2c to 16c overnight. The house insulation will be changed and replaced at the beginning of February. I have had the ASHP for almost 11 months and a guesstimate for the next 4 weeks brings it to 3500kWh for the year. Tesla app is showing 42% Self powered for 2022, solar PV giving 6.2MWh and home using 14.5MWh. For my Kia E Niro, I completed 9024 miles in 2022 using a total of 2292.39kWh so average of 3.94 miles per kWh, at a total cost of £324.69 for at home or Rapid Charging when away. This gave me a Cost per mile of 3.6 pence. I have not charged via solar as I was on the TEP from Octopus, to gain the cheap 11.69 pence whilst getting used to ASHP usage. Also adding extra solar to my south wall and waiting to see how much I can add! Hoping this will add production during the winter months and it will be angled to maximise winter over summer.

Thanks for watching and your stats. Glad to hear steps are in place to improve your insulation, I'm sure you will be amazed the difference afterwards in terms of comfort and energy usage. At lease you have identified the issue and doing something about it. Extra solar will be nice too. Good plans by the sounds of it.

When you’re pu in p day the tariff the PW savings is based on the info you put in to it about your tariff , as you said it’s not clever enough to save previous tariff details

Thanks Chris, thought that might be the case. If I put a much higher ridiculous tariff then I’ll save loads! 😂

Thank you John for the video. We have a very similar set up to you. I was wondering if you have recommendations for the best import/export tariff. We ideally wanted to be able to charge the battery/car cheaper over night but then to have a good export rates (have decent access during summer). We currently have agile outgoing tariff with Octopus which generates a value of about 18p per Exported kwh. When we looked at switching to Octopus Go, which has attractive overnight rates we were told it will not be compatable with their agile outgoing tariff. Have you/anyone heard about that? It feels like they give with one hand but take with the other 🥴 Also, have you ever considered Tesla energy plan?
@johntisbury
@johntisbury Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Maria. Octopus Go and Agile Export have always been non-exclusive from day one, essentially Octopus could be paying you for using electricity. They already lose money on the domestic supply side of their business, they have not made a profit yet. The two tariffs have different aims, high import = Go, high export = Agile export. You have to choose which is better for you economically or from a usability perspective based on your lifestyle and electricity needs around import/export ratio. TEP does takes all this away. A fixed price for import and export, you just use what you need. I've reviewed the tariff and whilst it's great for some, it's not for us. We have very low export, 2,000kWh in 2022 and that was unusually high. That will be less in 2023. Which means we would not build up a buffer in the summer to offset in the winter. I also don't like the loss of control of my battery and for Tesla/Octopus to take control of it and cycle it daily. You lose the ability in the summer for topping up the Powerwall from surplus solar, again as you have no control.

Hi John, firstly glad things are calming down. Great video as always, many thanks. The Tesla app from what I saw when I changed my tarrif details isn't smart, so doesn't have the ability to have different tarrifs over time like the solaredge app can. Hugo BTW is an interesting app. Regarding car costs have you found the cost of insurance change? My renewal was almost 3 times more expensive for no changes. Had to change provider after 15 years as they wouldn't budge.

Thanks for watching and for confirming my thoughts on the Tesla app with tariff changes. Not heard of Hugo, will investigate, thanks. Our insurance renewed in Sept 2022 with Direct Line and was a little bit cheaper over the previous year, I think being old and retired helps. Interesting to hear that yours had gone stratospheric. No loyalty shown to you obviously by them.

Hi John, do you leave gas water heating off all year now or only in the summer?
@johntisbury

Gas water heating is off all year. Only use gas for central heating. It's cheaper to use electric off peak to heat the hot water via the immersion heater in the tank.

@danieltpope2518 Жыл бұрын
@@johntisbury thanks. I will give it a go! I was concerned that it wouldn’t heat enough of the tank and I would end up in a cold shower! I don’t have a recirculation pump in the cylinder.

@johntisbury Жыл бұрын
@@danieltpope2518 neither do we. 140ltr tank with immersion in the top. Takes an hour to heat each day. I turned down the temp on the thermostat on the immersion as they are usually set too high, it’s about 50°c now. Outcome will depend on lifestyle, no of people in the house and hot water usage obvs.

Hi John can you advise please. I have the exact system installed 2011, 16 panels, 3.68 inverter with the golden FiT. I am adding a battery to the system to harvest unused generated power. Battery will be ac coupled and 10kW or 15kW. My installer informs me that he needs to get the DNO to approve the battery. I'm confused as I am not increasing the amount I can generate or send back to the grid. Every watt in the battery is from my panels or from the grid. Can you throw light on this?
@johntisbury
@johntisbury Жыл бұрын
DNOs class energy storage (including batteries) as demand when it is importing from the distribution network and generation when exporting to the distribution network. Engineering Recommendation (EREC) G98 and G99 are the technical requirements for the connection of energy storage devices to the network (like that of Solar PV).
