Brainstorm all things Grammar & Writing with me as I plan for 4th Grade in the 2023-2024 homeschool year 🙃 Do you and your homeschoolers enjoy these aspects of Language Arts? Have you used any of the resources I mention in this video?

This video was really helpful! My 4th grader is finishing up Beowulf grammar and we've been really happy with it. We took our time with it and spread it over 2 years. I feel the same as you about grammar, so I've been fine with the slower pace (we've tried to use what we learn in our writing rather than speeding through Beowulf just to check it off.) We are going to be adding the LHL novel studies next year, so I'd love a flip-through!

We love Beowulf Grammar! I’m going to use it and the full LA program next fall with my 3rd grader. We tried it with her over a year ago and it was too much for her but she is so excited to get back into it. It is such a fun program! And we love Charles and Jenn Guest with Guest Hollow!

I am so excited to try it! I am very curious about getting the full LA program from them, but I haven't committed yet. I need to look closer at what it entails and what books are recommended.

I bought Guest Hollow for next year. I really enjoy all the fun picture books about grammar. Brings it more alive versus being so prescriptive. Also, taking a laid back approach to it!!

So glad I ran into your channel! I've been researching and thought EIW was the one for us. But, I still wasn't at peace about it. I liked that there's a video but wasn't sure if my kids would love it. I like the idea of 2 books for K-12...less books to deal with. Would love to see a flip-through of all that you mentioned. Thank you for this video😊

Are we sharing the same brain? 😋 Your explanation of what you’ve used and gone through so far parallels my own journey with writing for my soon to be 4th grader! Thanks to Sarah and other home educators I’ve landed on TWR and thinking about ways to implement across subject areas, but you’re right, it totally takes time and effort to learn the methods and implement daily! 😵‍💫 I’d love to see more of Write By Number! The idea of being able to use one resource for such a wide span of time and covering everything is very appealing. You’re so not alone with not being able to complete 8-12 novel studies in a school year! We’ve used Brave Writer lit singles this year and while I love them, I find it difficult to keep up the momentum of reading as often as we’d like while making sure we cover all of the tidbits of grammar and mechanics and any other additional activities we’d like to pull in and finish in one month. Sometimes it’s wonderful to JUST read the book!! I love that your daughter has been journaling on her own accord now! Hope you continue finding success in the methods you’ve mentioned!

I totally agree that the homeschool community of mamas is amazing! I feel so grateful to be able to watch videos (like this one!) from real moms homeschooling their kids. It not only teaches me so much, but it helps me feel less alone on this journey of homeschooling my children. These moms don’t know how much impact they have had on my life just by sharing about homeschooling. Anyway, I agree and thank you for sharing!! 💗

I'm a CM homeschooler and I felt that daily written narrations did a good job of writing across subjects. I also really like The Writing Revolution so the way I implemented that was to pull an idea from one of our readings and do a because/but/so exercise (bad example: Columbus crossed the Atlantic because... Columbus crossed the Atlantic, but.... Columbus crossed the Atlantic so...).
@OdetoAbode
@OdetoAbode Жыл бұрын
We do that too! I'm not CM, but I do use narration, copywork and dictation as parts of my toolbox. I have one kid that does fantastic with narration, and another who doesn't and needs more explicit steps.

Yay!! I just recently found TWR as well and I agree it is best practice. I am on a similar path as you but I also may do a little writing and rhetoric. We also have used Beowulf grammar, we did it with Michael clay Thompson and I do feel it is helpful, they can do simple sentence diagrams but it doesn’t teach writing so we need TWR. Also read audiobooks! I tell you it has taken our read alouds from 7 a year to 10+

I've been looking for a literature curriculum but they're either busy work or too advanced for my daughter so I've decided to have my daughter keep a simple journal. I make her follow the Write By Number method. We're currently on Stage 3 so she does a 12323 paragraph on either a character or event.

The Writing Struggle is real. I too love the philosophy and passion behind Brave Writer, but I'm just not that right brained. On the other hand things like IEW are way too restrictive. Going to check out these resources for sure. We're also going to try Writing and Rhetoric.

Does Lit House history only work for history quest? I'm leaning towards curiosity chronicles for next year. Have you decided on how you will use both The Writning Revolution and Write by numbers?
@OdetoAbode

LitHouse just revised their history writing workbooks to work with any of the mainstream, chronological curricula. So it would work with History Quest, Story of the World, Curiosity Chronicles, etc.

I signed up for the free 14 day trial of write to numbers today. I don't see a big difference between the teacher manual and the student manual. Is the student manual mainly necessary for more independent kiddos or am I missing something?
@OdetoAbode
@OdetoAbode Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Great question! The teacher book and student book are very different. You may be able to make do with only one or the other, depending on your needs, but I really prefer to have both of them. The TB has clear goals, objectives, and assessment checklists for each stage your child will be working through. It also provides guidelines for teaching independent students, dependent students, and students with special needs. The TB also has reference pages and a glossary that really helps you to understand each stage. Additionally, it includes the answer key for all student worksheets. The student book contains a lesson for each stage that is written to the student. It clearly and simply explains what they will learn, and provides examples for them to use as they practice the stage in their writing assignments. The SB has none of the helpful resources or answers that are needed for teaching. It is meant to be read with your young child, or independently by a more advanced student. I plan on having a flip-through video of both on my channel next week! Hope this helps!

This was an excellent video, thank you! And yes, I can say that you definitely offer helpful content; I know that I have found the information I needed more than once on your channel. As to this video, first of all, a free pdf of the Writing Revolution?! I’m gearing up my printer! Homespun Childhood sounds like a great resource and I will check out her channel. I am also planning on using Beowolf with my 4th grader next year as well as giving LitHouse a try. Other than brief mentions I know next to nothing about Write by Number (the💰 has kept me away), but now I am curious because if a resource is worth it, it’s worth it. I look forward to seeing your flip-through and explanation of the program as I’m not seeing much on KZbin about it. And I have to say that I just love how willing you are to put in the work of researching for your children’s education. I can see a kindred spirit in you in that you want to be the best teacher and find the best resources and approaches possible for your children, so that you give them not just an education, but a high-quality education, even if that means some extra work on your end.
