We had a huge down pour last year and a lot of sump pump gfis tripped causing an estimated 2 million dollars damage to homes in the area and they still require them.

I installed several new panels and just installed all afci/gfci breakers so not to worry about future updates or personnel safety concerns or home overheating issues. I was wondering why they haven’t come up with a new complete afci/gfci panel. Like the new plug on neutral.

Great video as usual. Really cleared up some things for me. Thanks Ryan!

I really appreciated your expert insight into the issue regarding GFCIs and refrigerators/appliances. It was something I’ve been noticing and thinking about but unable to get insight into until this video. Glad the NEC and everyone else involved is “on it” and interested in tracking how it develops.

Most gfci's are now installed as breakers so although your suggestion is helpful it is not always applicable.

13:25. I’m curious why from the sink? Because of a possible bowl of contained water or because the main grounding is connected to the plumbing pipes?
@atkgrl3 ай бұрын
Of course the 6ft is from item cord length which is typically much shorter 3,4 ft

17:05 210.8(D) (8) so does that mean a gas range that plugs into a receptacle is not required to be GFCI protected. Seems like a miss wording to me.

One useful feature for refrigerators and freezers is GFCI protection with audible alarm for those locations which may be able to use receptacles with GFCI protection. It alarms if the GFCI protection trips. Haven't found anything similar in GFCI breakers.

GFCI outlet behind a refrigerator is not accessible to push test and reset buttons

Great video, as always. I really like your content. Question! How do you feel about the implementation of Butler's Pantries? A large walk-in pantry, no countertops because there will be no sinks in there, but with work surfaces or an island w/ no outlets, a room where you can store your Costco bulk paper towels, plates, drinks, waters,....second fridge and a freezer, with NO GFCI protection because it's not the kitchen and there is no sink? I plan on building my next home with one and only having to protect it with AF circuit interruption protection. Thoughts?

Why would you need a gfci for a designated 20 amp fridge outlet typically behind (inaccessible) the fridge.
@Mark2448Ай бұрын
Because of the potential shock hazard that could be present if the metal components of the appliance were to become energized.
@atkgrlАй бұрын
@ the fridge 20 amp is a new designation, now the NEC 2023 says gfci for a fridge? Soon it will be whole gfci afci panels. Perhaps it’s time to go back to knob and tube where we didn’t have to work about arcing. How would a fridge that comes with a cord already attached unlike the clothes dryer where connection mistakes could make for trouble but a fridge, do give an example of how a fridge might become energized…
@atkgrlАй бұрын
Where do you see fridge listed as requiring a gfci?, and do share how you keep it from shutting off each time the fridge motor kicks on?
@atkgrlАй бұрын
@ I don’t think at least in the kitchens I’ve seen the designated fridge outlet is “easily accessible”. (For discussion)

Don’t forget to mention baseboard heat, electric wall heaters in bathrooms and Kitchens, Also kick space heaters especially under kitchen sinks.

If Gfcis have to acessible, does that mean refrigerators have to be on a gfci breaker or will an alarm gfci acceptable
@MattMSimpson Жыл бұрын
You have to use a GFCI breaker or a dead front GFCI. I see this often for drinking fountains in commercial buildings, usually they’re cord and plug connected inside the unit and therefore the GFCI is not readily accessible.
@MattMSimpson Жыл бұрын
I should add, even if it alarms it still has to be readily accessible. The whole idea behind GFCIs needing to be readily accessible is for testing of the GFCI. If you know this already, my apologies ! Just trying to answer question.

I would think most homeowners will figure out ways to get around the refrigerator/freezer problem. Electricians will have to put them in. Many will be removed. I would in my own home.
@johnhooton3286 Жыл бұрын
As far as refrigerators and freezers go I think a single receptacle that is behind the appliance should be acceptable.
@Ryan-uw1vb Жыл бұрын
So.... Who complains to whom when GFCI decides to pop and fridge loses power? Im sorry, but its getting to the point that it seems more like device manufacturers are lining pockets than using common sense. Thank you for the videos, much appreciated. Just a bit of a rant. At this point, why not just force manufacturers to make the main be GFCI since that is the direction we are going. I honestly like GFCI protection, think its great compared to the AFCI, but this is just causing more headaches than needed, and just make the main GFCI/AFCI.
@lavacano5 ай бұрын
your and the cmp' rationale at 13 minutes has to be incorrect otherwise a gfci (or gfpe) would be required for hardwired appliances within 6 feet of the sink bowl. it doesn't matter if your touching the appliance for hardwired applications why is it different for cord and plug?
@RyanJacksonElectrical5 ай бұрын
That is the rationale. I would direct you to the first and second drafts of the 2023 NEC. If you think it whould apply to hard-wired equipment, you should make a proposal.
