For us down here in Au and NZ there's only one choice. Hilux all day long. Any shortfalls have been well and truly addressed in the aftermarket and a there's a massive amount of aftermarket options, parts easy to find, easy to work on and everyone knows how to work on them. If you can't afford a 70, Hilux is the next best option.

@@charlesanim-mensah359 hilux is in a real need of an upgrade it is old outdated and running off a name at the moment. It's ride and handling really are put to shame, not to mention the interior noise and its lack luster motor and power delivery. Forget the tech side because my dads new mobility scooter has more. Simple truth Toyota got lazy with this car and should have by now fixed the issues. The last truly decent hilux was 2 generations ago with the N170. After that they have just been mediocre. Maybe this new series will address some of the issues when it arrives in the next 2 years ........ one can only hope

Something to note about the dmax tailshaft is that the lower spec model actually has a steel tailshaft, which is fitting to their rugged work focused design. So if you really wanted to, steel tailshafts are available to swap into the higher spec models.

I would have liked to see who the Triton would have gone against these newer generations of utes. Especially considering when the MR came out on top in this series of tests when it came out. Seeing how it aged would have been great. Not too sure that the new generation coming out is going to be as capable off roader going to the bigger size sometimes size ain't everything.

Go the Nav, great looking ute for it’s age even before the new face lift. Have a 2016 STX and have accumulated 235,000km so far on mine with a tune making 200hp, lifted on 35’s. Mix of wheeling every month and towing a 17ft Jayco. The tune really wakes up the motor and throttle response without requiring a throttle controller. In the time of ownership (from new) I have only had 2 rear main seal replacements and the infamous leaky hot pipe and intercooler pipes that required replacing. Went with after market alloy pipes that costed approx 2.5K in total, so to be certain they will never leak again. 1K for the rear main seal out of warranty. It’s been a really capable ute, comfortable and has never left me on the side of the road stranded. For the 3.5K I have spent in the 6 years of ownership to rectify the oil leaks, I would say it was worth it and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I would definitely own one again unless Aus Nissan brings the big cousin Titan over, then all hands on deck haha.

I also have a 2016 stx. 243k atm. Done 3 hot pipes brought replacements at wrecker for $50. I know jp captured on KZbin promotes crg hot pipe which cost $450, platinum and others do them to. Very easy to put on. Im really happy with mine been a great vehicle good on fuel. No engine seals done. Only thing I don't like is they annoying horn which always gets bumped at the most awkward times. Might change for newer model wheel. But i vouch this is a great vehicle and more capable than others competitors in bush. They test numbers from these Muppets are stupid and predictable we know how it goes before it even starts.

Thanks for the great information. I ordered the Nav pro4x with the 1% interest finance deal and the discounted price when Nissan just had their flash sale. The cost per week is about 1/3 or more lower than the rest excluding the Cannon and that gives a lot of room for personalisation and upgrades. With the recurve tune and a good aftermarket suspension, snorkel and tyres, will be a beast. It's also one of the best looking ones externally in my opinion although the interior leaves a bit to be desired. (At least they have put in heated electric seats now)

Don't forget, the Amarok is essentially a reskinned Ranger - thats where the V6 and low range transfer come from. Not having the V6 version of the Ranger probobly let it down. Its a little bit weird to compare the Amarok engine to the Ranger, since the engine is actually provided by Ford.

I pick up my cannon xsr next week. My first 4wd ute and will be upgrading alot of things on it so it will be a better ride. I think once some companies figure out a tune for them they will open up a little bit more potential in them and make up for the initial laggy throttle input. But coming from a old commodore i think i will be quite pleased with it and wont be regretting the outlay that it would take for a similar spec ranger or hilux.

The comment made a few times in this presentation "good for 10 years ownership" was my guide to selecting a new ute, I studied the market closely for three years and just recently bought a new BT50 , no regrets whatsoever, really getting to know and appreciate it. Much quicker and smoother than I was expecting, I'm banking on ten or more years use in the country. Been driving 51 years now and hand on heart the BT50 is the most fuel efficient car I have ever owned and is brilliant for distance drives, effortless feel at cruise etc. Will be investing near two grand for the aftermarket steering knuckle kit that alters the geometry and removes the bump steer problem, apart from saving tyres I'm told the front end will sit more stable on the road. Thanks for the test, I really enjoyed watching.

I picked up a base model Cannon very recently, and im glad i did. I couldn't afford a more expensive ute, and I gotta say, value for money wise, you can't beat it. From a mechanics standpoint, it also looks super easy to work on. Yes, it's a bit sluggish and laggy on the throttle, but I think a throttle controller would make a night and day difference to this vehicle. As for the suspension, one thing to note is that the XSR has the same suspension as the base model but with all the added weight of steel bumpers and roll bars, i test drove an XSR and i gotta say, the base rides a lot better being lighter. That being said, most people are probably going to upgrade the suspension anyway no matter what they get.

I believe that personal preferences got in the way of a what should be an unbiased review e.g adblue really, a tank lasts how many 000klms! And a new turbo position and controller on the Dmax is more reliable - what historic data do you have- plus if the engine was so reliable before - why did they move it. The reply comment on the V6 engine is disappointing given the crank has been revised, totally different outlook to the Dmax situation Only my view

I've had the Cannon xsr for almost 5 months now (AKA P-Series limited in south Africa) and my only complaints are that it is a bit under powered when fully loaded and the suspension is a bit bouncy at times. Other than that its been an absolute dream! I've done quite a few tough tracks around here as well as some tough off-road game drives with zero issues. For me, the fact that it comes from the factory twin locked with a snorkel, good all terrain tyres, bash plates, built in 220V inverter with outlets in the cabin and the engine bay and a winch too in South Africa was a deal breaker. I'll have to see in years to come how the reliability holds up

Another great comparison! I have a Navara and I've been really happy with it but so far in 145000 ks its done 2 rear mains, lost count of replacement intercooler pipes, multiple turbo lines and has now developed a mystery squeal at high revs. Lucky they are a good looking ute! For me I wouldn't buy any of the current on offer dual cabs and wait for 2025 as it looks like there will be some significant updates to the market. Would love to see the Tacoma make its way to Oz or at very least give the next gen Hilux some of the same styling.

I also have a 2022 Navara and I fell in love with the looks of it. Here in South Africa, the new Navaras come with an upgraded version of the old 2.5 liter single turbo diesel engine that was used in the older generation Navaras - we don't get the 2.3 twin turbo. But it also makes 140kw and 450nm. I don't why, but according to some of the guys at the dealership I spoke to, they are of the opinion that the older engine is perceived to be more reliable (don't know whether that is true or not), so the South African guys are more inclined to buy one. Their strategy seems to have worked, because the new D23 is selling a lot better than the previous D23 that we had with the twin turbo engine.

Good comparison. It’s hard to choose a ute when you consider all the nitty-gritty. In the end, the ‘best’ one is the one that has the feature/aspect that suits your purposes best. I bought a ute early this year, not new but a low kilometer used ute to save money. I got a 2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain. Love it. It’s stock, all I’ve done is put all-terrain tyres on it, a 12v system, drawer and other stuff for a practical camping and touring setup.

@@jerrymyahzcat It makes sense that they come with highway tyres. The majority of dual-cab utes don’t go off road, used as family cars or as a tradie car (which doesn’t necessarily go off road). So for the majority of buyers, the regular tyres suit them. Also, a lot of ‘off road guys’ are pretty specific to which tyre brand/model they like, if they came with all-terrain tyres I suspect a lot of buyers might swap them for their preferred off road tyre.

What a great video, but one thing comes to mind during the sand test. Me being a WildTrak X owner, i think if you put it into "Sand" mode or any other one of the off-road mode, it will turn off Engine auto off feature. In-fact during the first test, if Jocko used mud-ruts/rock crawl, the X would've eaten that hill for breakfast without breaking a sweat, but i know the crew here is trying to leave everything as "factory default" as possible, but if that is the case, then the ute/car will be in the wrong mode for the job, default mode would be useful for overall on tarmac comfort etc. just my 2 cents thought. Love the video, love the crew! especially Jocko! and love the show!!
