I’m waiting on a Dmax to arrive early next year. Bloody stoked and keen to get into 4x4. Haven’t had a vehicle that’s been able to do anything for my entire life and the thought of driving anywhere at anytime and being comfortable that it’ll handle it is something like a dream! I’ve watched heaps of your reviews and went with the Dmax and I’m sure it won’t disappoint me!

I drive a 2015 MQ Triton and have modified it for both off-roading and touring. Have addressed the suspension and power issues with a lift, UCAs and engine tune. The thing is an absolute weapon in my humble opinion now. I love watching these ute of the year videos as it gives me a great insight into all the pros and cons of the modern day dual cab. That being said, I’d be confident in picking the Triton as my number one always!!

Good stuff lads, loved the video. The ute comparison videos have to be my favourite. The only thing I think was missing, which you've done in previous years is cabin comfort, and ease of use with the technology. I know it's not related to the 4wd aspect of the utes but I wish you'd put it in at the end as bonus content which doesn't go towards the overall score. I feel it just gives a more comprehensive review of the utes and most people use their utes as both a 4wd and daily driver, so it would be nice to know. Great stuff though, keep it up.

This is probably the first Ute of the Year where I thought a Ranger would actually be a good choice, but my heart is with the MR Triton, which is why I bought myself a 2022 GLX+. If you're not putting a big canopy on it, the overhang doesn't matter that much, and the excellent value for money is hard to go past. Plus it's a tried and tested platform with very little major issues, and there is loads of aftermarket accessories and support for it.

Do not forget that Mitsubishi is the most successful vehicle manufacturer in the Dakar Rally which is mechanical torture for any vehicle. The Ranger isn’t that good of a design, typical slack specifications by Ford, they are big, big deal and I often wondered why people bought them when they don’t even go off road, big lump of aluminium and other flaky metals to con the buyer.

I came close to getting a new Triton a couple of years ago, would have done the deal until I noticed no rear locker. Salesman was a clown but eventually it became clear - no rear locker available for any Triton in Malaysia. Totally wasted my time even looking at it, cos any aftermarket fit would screw the warranty.
@jamiemckennon1944
@jamiemckennon1944 Жыл бұрын
@@bigglyguy8429 that's not actually true. The dealer would have to show that the locker was what cause the warranty issue. If they can't do that the warranty is valid. Same goes for any aftermarket accessories

@@jamiemckennon1944 Well that sounds nice in concept but here in Malaysia I wouldn't want to rely on consumer laws or whatever. They don't call them Stealerships for nothing, and all dealers are on the lookout for ways to avoid being on the hook for warranty work. I guess in Australia or the UK you could make a case, maybe. I also have to question my willingness to get my hard-earned to a company that tried to fob me off with a vehicle incapable off-road in the first place?

@@bigglyguy8429 mate I wouldn't underestimate how far an unlocked Triton will go. It has the best 4wd system with traction control on the market and it will outdrive a lot of 4wds with rear lockers. Like the last few 4WD test Shauno, you guys didn't disappoint. Real 4WD test unlike any other. My go to would be the Triton. Maybe a custom tune and modified rear seat area (not for everyone) to bring the weight forward of the rear axles and short tray. Brake over angle over touch (Poni lol), tested reliablility over new and 20k less when you need to send it is key for me and I'm not a fan of towing when exploring. Watch enough of you guys to know better. But from owning a great Pajero 2002 diesel for 14 years to a Hummer H3, what do I know :)

Since they have taken on board customer feedback I would of thought they would lean more into the offroad capabilities! The L200 (aka Triton) is so common in Europe and Africa, and is largely regarded as the Hilux alternative. My first ever brand new car, and first 4x4 was my current MQ Triton. I got the Sports Edition, mainly for the rear diff lock, and I've honestly never had to use it in over 4 years of ownership. I'm now starting the modification journey with lift, tires, chassis mount canopy all going on in the last year. Next up will be brakes, bar work and possibly a tune. One thing that strikes me on every one of these ute tests, is the Mr Everything role the Triton plays. The thing keeps up with the big boys in almost every regard. Thing only let down is the smaller engine, and even so, if you are wanting to tow a 3 tonne caravan, the mid-section ute market probably isn't for you tbh. Love the work lads!

Awesome review lads, really insightful and absolutely loved it. Also agree with everyone else. Lets see your review on stock SUVs as well as some with basic mods like average lift and bigger tyres. I would also like to see you and your experts tackle a trip or two for a few days and give your opinion on the lower priced vehicles like the Mahindra, GWM P series (think yours is called the Cannon), JAC and LDV T60 ( Nice Looking Vehicle by the way) and what other cheaper vehicles you guys have in Oz ( Im in South Africa). As much as we all love the modern Utes and dream of owning one. Cost of living is forcing us to look at other alternatives. Like you keep on saying in your beers in the shed. All you need is a something with 4wd and you just need to get out there. But do you buy someone else old 4bie that has been pulled through its ring and spend a ton trying to keep it on the road and only go bush once in a while or do you by a capable new none major brand one and do a few minor mods (tyres, small lift, basic battery system) get other and wheel with everyone with better peace of mind that driving something newer might be a bit more reliable.

Loved watching this... I bought a 2015 hilux brand new and took her out the first weekend and learnt how to do a few river crossings. I found myself here as I’m about to start doing her up for more rugged 4WD... I need to learn a lot! So thanks gents. I’m glad the hilux came in up near the top, I finally went with the hilux because I figured when I finally get out around the country on my own and have any problems, replacement parts should be pretty easy to find! Probably a hilux somewhere on every property! 😏 I hope!

I drive a 2014 Ford Ranger and would love to upgrade the drum brakes. I would still take the new Ranger for the tech and the safety for the kids in the back. I would also like to see a full test that includes a Jeep, a full look of what's out there. Keep up the good work guys and keep testing at this level, it was great.

I simply couldn’t look past the MR Triton GLS back in 2020 for $47k! It’s a weapon off road as, great on fuel and actually surprisingly torquey for such a small engine! I’ve gone to town on the mods like all of us here and with that has come the extra weight! The brakes are good, but it would definitely make for a far superior touring package with a bendix upgrade kit, to improve braking performance when needed on our ever growing and busy Aussie highways. Great review as always lads 👌🏼

I've got a MQ triton which shares some DNA with the MR triton. I think another category that should have been added was warranty. Considering the price point of the Triton and it's 10 Year warranty, I think that would be a massive factor for new ute owners today when deciding on making a new vehicle purchase. I think it wouldn't change which ute would win but it would probably shuffle around the Triton from 4th. Great video, would love to see Nissan in next year.
