Maybe if it weren’t for the Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition it would be best deal. A list of what you get for $15,799 will convince anyone of it IMO. Not to mention dealer support being better. Really nice bike you’ve got though. Enjoy! Loving my Expedition and crazy coincidence is I have 2200 miles on mine too. 🏍️💨

Burns did a review of the KTM 390 and I don’t remember him saying a thing about the standing position and handlebar height. Do you have a little groupthink going on there? It’s as if that one modifiable thing totally disqualifies the bike.
@EvansBrasfieldMotojournalist
@EvansBrasfieldMotojournalist Жыл бұрын
We test the bikes as they are delivered and point out that a simple change will negate the problem completely. While Ryan is the same height as Burns, he is a much more aggressive off-road rider, which may account for his opinion about the handlebar. Abhi and I are 3 and 7 inches taller, respectively, and that makes a huge difference when considering bar height. This was not a shootout to pick an absolute winner but, rather, an opportunity to show what each displacement category offers riders. The BMW’s failure was a huge loss to the test.
@stevewasion8082
@stevewasion8082 Жыл бұрын
At 5'11, I found that rolling the handlebars forward about 10º gave me an inch and a quarter in height and a better reach without the hassle of risers or changing bars and cables. The pegs are a little high also, but coming from a Triumph Tiger 955, I find that there's not much real difference between the two when standing. I downsized because of age and declining ability, but find that the "little" KTM is such a hoot (even without, or maybe because of, 60 fewer horsepower) that it would probably have been the ideal size and strength for me many years ago.
@houseofroos
@houseofroos Жыл бұрын
@@EvansBrasfieldMotojournalist Thanks for the explanation. Ryan Fortnine poisoned the well on this model with his negative assessment of the footpeg angle. After that it’s all anyone seems to talk about. I swapped a Versys-x 300 for a 390 and find the riding position of the 390 to be superior overall. The Versys has a seating position that causes one to slide forward into the tank when the bike jerks forward coming off throttle. Now THAT is annoying! The KTM throttle is so much smoother with the ride by wire and the seat is larger and flatter. Anyway, thanks for the vids, I can’t get enough of them and I always check my KZbin favorites to see if there’s a new one from MO!

Many reviews of the Tuareg have mentioned excessive heat. It's honestly the one thing that's prevented me from taking the plunge, I hate a hot bike roasting my thigh or manhood. Wish the reviewers would comment on that, one way or the other.

I bought the Desert-X and sold it after 1 year. It was my 6th Ducati and likely my last Ducati. Lots of little problems (+ a $2700 broken wheel on the ride home from purchasing it) and Ducatis response to them, made me sell it. Beautiful machine but over-hyped and too breakable. I've had my Tuareg for a week, but man is that becoming my favorite bike ever! I really wanted to like the new V-Strom 800, but the ergos simply didn't work for me. Otherwise it's a fantastic bike from what I could tell on my short test ride. Wish that one could have been included in the comparison, too. The Ducati is more of a halo model for the more wealthy rider both from the initial cost, but also servicing. The Aprilia might certainly lean that way for service costs, too. I'm just well off enough to be able to buy a used Tuareg and be able to bank enough cash to have the $1000 12k service done.

While I understand the sentiment, that’s an untenable request. I have modified every motorcycle I’ve owned to make them fit me better, but the changes I make for my 5’11” body probably wouldn’t be enough for a 6’3” rider, like Abhi. Additionally, how would riders benefit from a review of a modded bike, when the mods might not be appropriate for them? It makes more sense to review what you get from the factory that stands a better chance of fitting more people (After all, isn’t that the manufacturer’s job?) than a bike that is set up to my or Ryan’s or John’s or Abhi’s preferences. Now, the 390 is a special case, but we didn’t realize there was a problem until we started riding it in SD.

$6K in options for the Duke, almost the price of the 390? $3K exhaust, almost half the price of the 390? Even the Aprilia is twice as much as the 390. Or you can get an Aprilia and a 390 for the price of the Duke. If this were a car test, it would be akin to testing a loaded Subaru BRZ, a loaded Mustang GT and a well equipped, optioned out Corvette Z06/Z07. No, the Subaru is not as fast but YES, it would keep up in the twisties with them and the lighter weight inspires higher levels of confidence in fast driving than the other two. The 390 "shortness of greatness" is only a handlebar riser and level footpeg away. No one here complained about the seat, which does soften a bit after riding it for a while, there's always the superior Seat Concepts at $220. Yes it is slower but it is the only bike I would take on a single track. It can go where ALL other Adventure bikes CANNOT. It is the bridge between a Dual Sport and an Adventure bike, mostly due to its weight. It is also the best small Adventure bike, costing a few bucks more than the slower, but slighlty more capable 300cc-sized dual sports from Honda and Kawasaki, but able to deliver passing power on the highway which the DS bikes cannot do. And it is LOADED with features.

I never understood all the handling compliments regarding the desert x. It’s a bear: it’s heavy, a mile long wheelbase, and a trail like chopper. The engine makes power about 1000rpm too high for an adventure bike. I mean the tuareg and tiger are like lightsabers in comparison. Compare one against the GS benchmark. Ok, this wins the absolute dumbest review I have seen to date. Seems like you guys found what you could get your hands on and then said, "let's make video" Why is the KTM even in this comparison? Maybe you could have thrown in a Honda Monkey as well? I cannot stand it when reviewers start talking about which bike they like the best and then throw pricing in there. The Tuareg is a good bike for its class, the KTM a good bike for its class, the DX in a class of only a few. Those are the points you should have made. How about describing why they cost what they cost? The DX as a stock bike is $17k but the bike in the vid has every possible upgrade to make it as expensive as it is so why did you not mention that? For those who wanted real information about these bikes what did you learn? absolutely nothing. I don't care what bike you own, the Tuareg is not in the same class s the Duc. Why you might ask? It is a 660cc motor vs a 937cc motor, it is 69.9 HP vs 111 HP, the DX has a 6 axis IMU, by far the best tech, cruise control, hydraulic clutch, quick shifter, blipper, after market crash bars, skid plate oil pump protector, ralley seat, full Termy exhaust with the EVO map, heated grips. The Tuareg does not have the 6 axis IMU, cable clutch, no quick shifter (available as aftermarket) no exhaust or map, no crash bars, no seat upgrade, no skid plate or other protection. I have ridden both and if you know what you are doing on the dirt that Tuareg will not keep up with the Desert X as described by your off road expert in the vid. Aprilia has a garbage dealer network and customer care. The bottom line is that the DX is more expensive because it is a higher quality machine period. The Aprilia is a great machine for its class but add some of those features to the Tuareg that are stock on the DX and you start seeing the price gap close. Lastly, the DX is almost like a sport bike in the corners it handles so well.......the Tuareg is not in the same league and shouldn't be.....that is why it is a king of the 700 ish class. The only bikes you should be comparing are the KTM890R, Tiger and the DX because they are the only ones in that class.

Unfortunately, we had a mechanical with the GS and had to change our approach. Give the choice to adapt and push on and to cancel the whole project, what would you have done? Clearly you feel we should have heaped more love on the DesertX. You’re entitled to that opinion. Go enjoy the Ducati. We aren’t trying to stop you.

@@EvansBrasfieldMotojournalist No, I did not miss that and it would have made it even more pointless. What I have issues with are that you guys are, admittedly, unqualified dirt riders (apart from one I suppose) but all of you provided "Professional" feedback on the very thing people buy these bikes for when you don't even know what qualifies a bike to be good off road. It was obvious from the first word that the Aprilia was the "winner" but you give no details.....is it a perfect machine? you would think so based on this so called review. The Aprilia has a bunch of price point short comings and people buy based on your reviews but you don't mention what it lacks in comparison to the DX, why it is so much cheaper? You also gloss over the fact that the DX was fully loaded and call it a $24k machine which is misleading because you don't say why. You also don't mention that the DX, when set in Enduro mode, drops the power to 75HP's but instead you say that it has too much power for the dirt.......gee, the Aprilia is 69HP compared to the DX's 75HP....wouldn't that be good to know before buying? I am not here to bash any of the bikes but I have owned or ridden each one of these bikes. I have purchased based on "professional" reviews before and have been burned do to unqualified opinions like these. My personal opinion is that the Aprilia is a fantastic bike for the money but it is not in the same league as the DX and I believe I articulated why above. You can't compare three completely different machines at completely different price points and then in the final assessment say I have to eliminate said bike because I can't personally afford one. You were the ones who decided to do such a dumb comparison so you make sense of it? Now your watcher/buyers will walk away with the Aprilia Tuareg as the bike they are gonna buy whether they can afford better or not. Don't have "Moto journalist" in your title if this is going to be an opinion piece....especially one when you are not qualified. I constantly see how certain manufacturers always get the love, some for good reason and some not so much. To answer your question would I push on. sure, but not in this way. Look, you get what you pay for and that simplifies the whole review. For your listeners out there....I can personally say that each bike is great in its respective class but the DX is by far the best machine, most sophisticated, most capable on and off road period and you are gonna pay for that. However, you are gonna pay $17k not $24k as was suggested but you can certainly make it a $24k bike just like you could make the Aprilia a $20k bike by adding parts etc. The problem is that the there are certain features you simply cannot get on the Aprilia and never will until Aprilia decides to offer it on the Tuareg......and guess what? that will jack the price up. If it were like for like the Aprilia would cost the same as the DX but it isn't and people need to know that. Also, people need to know that owning an Aprilia will be challenging because the dealer network sucks, getting parts from Aprilia is next to impossible and God forbid you breakdown.......those are things people need to know and those are based on fact not opinion. I look forward to the Harley Road Glide Special vs a Horse named Skippy comparison video coming up next......which one will be best for you?

So, you are discounting the part where we broke down the DesertX’s premium parts and recommended just getting the $1,500 protection package? Really, I don’t know why you’re so upset. The DesertX is the best performing bike of the bunch, but is it the best bike for all riders? To take advantage of the additional power and handle the weight, a rider needs a higher skill set. That’s not a bad thing. It just is. Our group opinion was that the DesertX was the best performing bike of the bunch and the Tuareg was the most balanced, which might make it appeal to more riders of a wider range of skills. Personally, the Ducati’s engine is one of my favorites of all time, and I am considering getting a Multistrada 950S (or V2) as a personal bike. I’m sorry you feel we let you down, but I’m comfortable with what we produced in this video. We will continue to endeavor to improve our video content.

I have to agree with the part of your comment that it was a review of “what you could get your hands on.” But I still appreciated seeing the bikes and their features out in the rough.

I know the article is a year old, But I completely lost interest by seeing the KTM 390 in the mix here…. I ride a KTM 890 adventure, and to me the 390 excuse my pun is a little kids bike. There is no place for it to be compared to the big middleweights.
