I just got back from a 2000 km trip on my Himalayan (her name is Laverne, fyi). It's easily 10x longer than any trip I've ever ridden and I was a little apprehensive, but she did great. I mounted Tusk boxes for a couple hundred bucks instead of the $700 RE boxes, a plastic top box I could have done without, and a 30L dry bag, plus my 100kg. Laverne did great. The fastest I went was a little more than 60mph, but I was on twisty secondary roads through the Appalachians, so there wasn't much opportunity to go faster. I've been riding for almost 35 years and this is hands down my favorite bike. I haven't done stuff like in this video, but it's obvious a Himalayan is capable. She's a sturdy little mule: She won't run like a thoroughbred, but she'll take me and my stuff damn near anywhere I want to go.

Do the first and second oil changes when prescribed (don't forget to clean out the little screen on the left side of the case), check the valves, use a halfway-decent quality oil, and it'll keep getting smoother - especially the transmission - as you put miles on it. After hearing this video referenced in the latest High Side/Low Side podcast, I had to come back and watch it again - maybe the 3rd of 4th time. This is one of the videos that contributed to my decision to purchase a Himalayan in November of 2020 as my first bike at 40, and I'm still riding it to this day - just ticked over 11k miles. Such an impressive little burro, like Zack says. Considering how much time these guys have spent around motorcycles, the fact that they still hold the Himy in high regard 3 years later speaks to the longevity of the bike too. Like Ari says, you can do all the maintenance yourself, even the valve checks and adjustments - it's so unintimidating in every imaginable way. Everybody told me to get a cheap used bike but I think that was a riskier proposition and may have discouraged me. If you want to ride and learn to maintain your bike confidently, just get a Royal Enfield.
@royliber38243 жыл бұрын
I don't even have bike license but holy the Himalayan looks appealing to me. Gotta love the classic durable look, with the small somewhat modern technology put into it. This bike is fully made to enjoy the ride and its proven it can go into places it really didn't meant to go to. I would choose that bike in a heart-beat for long roadtrips.

I love my Himalayan. You can easily buy cheaper aftermarket aluminum panniers or even cheaper soft saddle bags but the OEM ones are just so nice. The adv suspension is wonderful on our trash north eastern roads...that sometimes just end. Also Himalayans are built like tanks, I hit 2 deer and mine still trucked on home afterwards. They are also super nimble once you get the feel for them. Took mine down to some sand/dirt dirt bike trails (the trail was only as wide as my pegs in places and I had the panniers on) and she did fine. Needed a bit of extra umph to make the tight bends and it's a bit too heavy for sand but still made it and had a blast.

@@crockett11000 They both have the same power and the 250 is nearly 200lbs less weight. So it definitely can do better or grab a 300cc and it has more power. 24hp out of an engine that's 411cc is definitely not good.

@@Random-ed2xf I now must agree with you, I rode a himi last week. It was the Lamest most uncomfortable piece o crap thing I ever got on. Gutless and so slow!. The Kawasaki KLX 300 with 6 gears goes 82 mph, and blows the Himi away!.

@@crockett11000 And yet it's such a great bike that a woman managed to travel halfway across the world without any issues, you're criticising it for all the wrong reasons, it's a great adventure Bike that's why you see a lot of people using them rather than the Kawasakis and you don't want a high revving engine that produces its power up top and the Himalayan doesn't pretend to be a fast bike! There's a good reason why it has taken off in the adventure bike sector and not those Kawasakis or the Chinese junks!

@शिरीष ರಾಮಾಯ The bullet sucks for riding in the Himalayas. I did the Manali-Leh highway then up to the Nubra Valley and then over to Pangong lake and the Himalayan was hands down a better bike for those rough roads. The bullet was hands down a better bike on the pavement. I did ride a bullet over some of those passes but my front fender was dented really bad from hitting the engine/frame and I was beat to death on it. Not so with the Himmy. Great bike!

@@karthikvs9635 RE is not built for Himalayas . Just because it has higher low revving torque doesn't mean it's offroad . One fall at steep hilly road and it will be difficult to get back up . No proper suspension and too heavy

Brilliant video guys. Really enjoyed that. I’d take the Royal Enfield. My dad owned an RE when he was young, back in the 70s, and he said it leaked oil terribly. It finally blew up on a motorway, so he literally tipped it into a ditch, got a lift home, and never went back for it. 😂

I just picked up a 2023 Royal Enfield Himalayan for $5200 out the door. I'm so pleased with it. Cant wait to put the miles on it on and off road. Great video showing two amazing cheap advs. As for the CRF 250L I had a 2017 for about 2 years. Think I paid $5400 out the door and while it was amazing off-road it was not so great on road. It cruised at highway speeds no problem but because its a dirtbike with lights it was super uncomfortable. It does weigh a lot less than the Himalayan and they both make pretty much the same power.

Neither bike was meant for this, looking at that trail, id be hesitant to take any adventure bike there. With that said, everytime i see someone taking a Himalaya off road i cant help but think that RE built one hell of a bike for the price. Great video, glad to have you guys back.

I like that the himalayan is built with such a cheap and yet bulletproof engine, you can see that that allows the rest of the bike to be considerably higher quality than the csc.

Horses for courses. One is a street machine with gravel ability whilst the other is hardcore offroad designed with tarmac capability. Most people will never exceed the capabilities of either. I want both frankly but the Himalayan is vintage and flawed just like me and so I want it more!😂 Like to see someone do that on a gs without sobbing!
