2023 Albright Institute: Lessons From the Edge-A Conversation with Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch

The Albright Institute was honored to welcome Marie Yovanovitch, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, for its annual public dialogue. Ambassador Yovanovitch spent much of her career working to advance democracy in the post-Soviet world. In this dialogue, she discussed current challenges to global democracy, her career as a diplomat, and how she remained committed to democratic values, even while caught in the midst of the first impeachment inquiry of Donald Trump.

I just completed listening to her reading Lessons from the Edge. So now am seeking out more of her speaking in her own voice. I'm older than she is. I am so impressed and have learned so much about the importance of diplomacy in the hands of a dedicated servant like her.

Having already been familiar with her story and being a bit older than the Ambassador, I was most interested in her gender discussion. But want to say she deserves so much credit for how she handled herself, both during her career, but also during the first impeachment. Imo, courageous people don’t feel courageous; they act courageously, and she did. Glad the Institute invited her to speak, but wish there had been a period for audience questions.
