Track limits issue: Solution 1, find a way to give feedback to the driver so they can tell how close they are to track limits. Because part of the reason is they say they can't see properly to tell for sure. Solution 2, for Austria, on turns 9 and 10, instead of putting in a full gravel trap, put in a 1 metre wide strip of gravel 1.5m outside the track limit and leave the rest of the area as run off.

Thank you for taking my question! First time that happened. What I meant with it is that F1 and whoever makes the calendar seems to feel a need to put more street tracks on there and remove great normal circuits like Sepang, Hockenheim, Nürburgring etc. And I think we can all agree that those circuits provide for better racing than the endless street circuits with walls where overtaking seems impossible. So, I actually heard something interesting yesterday. They could just put a gravel trap between turn 9 & 10 and solve the whole track limits thing, but, F1 isn't the only one racing there. While gravel or a wall is great for F1, the red bull ring is also used by moto GP. All the good options to stop track limits for F1 are actual safety concerns for moto GP. For motorcycle races, the current concrete runoff is actually the better solution. The argument then went further that non-permanent tracks ( monaco, miami, ... ), they can build stuff for a race, then take it down and make money by using the space for something else. A permanent racetrack can only make money by having as many races on it as possible. So it makes sense that they build the track to allow racing for as many categories as possible. Just look at what the pandemic did, no races took places, permanent racetracks suffered immensely. Rather then a gravel trap or whatever, the better solution probably is to change the layout of the track at turn 9. The pitlane entry for the red bull ring isn't ideal either. So maybe 2 birds, 1 stone?

There should be a way to immediately make the breaking of the track limits visible to the viewer and the teams. Race Control couldn't keep up policing the violations. Or not even noticing them at all. That's what bothered me most. As a viewer I want to have the warning handed out seconds after it happened - not many laps later or even after the race... This would also be better for the driver, so he can adjust his driving style. I guess Hamilton and others collected a couple even before they knew they were doing it...

To solve the track limits issues i feel you can take 3 different approaches. 1. Make the white lines wider so they're easier to see both from the drivers POV as well as cameras offboard. 2. Don't widen/thicken them keep them the same size as they are now but move them behind the red and white rumblestrips. Thus widening those areas of track by a car width, Improving racing room as well as flow for the drivers, all the while improving the penalty situation. 3. Install gravel traps, which as stated in other videos is dangerous and hampering for moto GP who share these tracks with F1.

Carlos would not have been able to catch Max, but he was quicker than Charles during the entire race, without DRS - it's okay if they want to race as a team, but I will patiently wait for the moment where Carlos is infront of Charles, and if Charles is quicker they better have the same approach they had this week. If they want to have a first and second driver, the one that has been having better results and fewer mistakes (and is higher up in the championship) should be number one, not the other way around. Also, have fun at Silverstone!!!! We'll be watching ❤

@timplett1

Maybe just do some simple fact checking before making statements like "Carlos was faster the ENTIRE race". Just scroll back through the live timing and look at the gaps between Carlos and Charles throughout the race. Carlos lost out at the first pit stop, he came about a little over 6 seconds behind with a few cars between. From there he closed to within 5 seconds of Charles by the time he cleared the other cars, at which point Charles slowly but steadily pulled away from him. That trend continued throughout the race, there were some times when Carlos was faster, but also times Charles was faster. And end of the day, Charles was faster overall while actually staying on the track, so...

@Halsning

@@timplett1 Oh I'm very informed, thank you. You can't look at the gaps without any context. You can't compare Charles' race to Carlos, from the moment he was P2 he had a comfortable gap with Max and Checo, he could manage tires, he had CLEAN AIR. Of course he was faster, he had no one bothering him, why do we think Max has always such a big gap with whoever's second? Cause he's just chilling, clean air, better aerodynamics. You should also go and check every single time the track limit was exceded, because F1 were only checking turns 9 and 10 (you'd be surprised with how many drivers exceded the track limits and got no penalty whatsoever). It's unfair to say Carlos had more track limit penalties when Ferrari screwed him (twice) and he had to risk more to balance the time he lost in that god awful pit stop. Let's not forget what happened to him in Q1 and he still managed to finish P1 with just one time set. Carlos has been better so far this season, which is why it annoys me that he's always considered second.

The drivers werent out there trying not to break track limits. It a very tricky corner, Weirdly cambered, wind, turbulence, etc. The just need to take a sledgehammer to that secondary curb and replace it with grass or gravel. If they did that the curb would only be 3/4th of a car width and the grass/gravel would slow them down before they crossed the white line

The problem about policing track limits is not the act of exceeding track limits by the drivers, it's the point where race stewards don't manage to keep up with what is happening on track, give out a warning for track limits to a DNF car and dish out a handful of additional penalties after the race has finished and just upon protest of a team, ultimately changing nearly the entire race classification.

Some cars are getting them and doing better, some cars haven’t got them yet and might look worse by comparison. I think it will shake itself out and level off in a few races. I hope the sprint shootout was the turning point for Perez to get back to his potential. He should be in P2 waiting in the wings for Max to make a mistake or have a bit of bad luck so he can take P1. Track owners can't just add walls or gravel everywhere and 'runoff/rejoin' is always better than the alternative. All classes rely on tyre grip, but F1 cars particularly rely on under floor downforce. So progressively remove the subfloor downforce behind the kerbs so there is no lap time advantage in 'accidentally' running wide........ 1200 times! If the floors are so sensitive, it must be possible to make a surface 'porous' enough to mess up F1 subfloor performance while other classes would hardly notice the difference - and if it happened to improve track/runoff drainage in that area as well.......

I love the purpose built circuits, but street circuits have their appeal. I don't typically watch NASCAR, but I watched the Chicago street race, last night & I actually enjoy it. I did; however, think that Indycar or F1 would have been much better around that street circuit. Especially since I was a wet/drying race. I think Jenson Button finished 20th.

The problem with saying "oh sainz wouldn't have been any quicker they'd just be in a train again" is that if carlos couldnt make any head way on verstappen then they could always switch back... "if carlos was quicker then he wouldve just overtaken leclerc" he was given team orders not to attack, it wasnt just we wont tell charles to let you by, it was you will not overtake We saw with lando how good the drs was, so it is entirely possible that carlos wasnt faster than leclerc, but leclerc was struggling with rear grip on the first stint and carlos was only margginally slower on the later stints so its possible that carlos was quicker

Next time there's a controversial corner the drivers should have a meeting and agree to exceed the limits every lap. I mean in all fairness I get it for safety they don't want to put big curbs or gravel traps or a wall there but it's the highest level of racing You got to have something. I mean don't get me wrong it's nice to have I run off at turn one compared to several cars getting beached in gravel and out of the race before the race even starts, but there has to be something. Perhaps more gritty surface that will give them extra grip to hang on and stay on the track but at the same time it would quickly eat up their tires as punishment. But I think the only solution that would fit everyone including MotoGP racers and other types of race car series is to modify the turn. Either put a chicane in there like Spain used to, open up the angle or tighten up the angle where drivers can't take it full out from turn 9 into 10.

The biggest complaint is not the track limit penalty. It’s not getting the penalty during the time of the race. If a driver can’t tell they are barely going over the line and not getting warnings. That is the issue

Lets be honest. Carlos got screwed. It should not be argued that he wouldn't have been able to catch up with Max. You don't know what will happen in the race and he was obviously quicker and could have pressured him more at that moment in the race...

It is really a pity that you so often form an opinion and voice it so strongly without having a deeper look at things. Makes me really miss Chainbear dearly. For example, Lando did not "hang on for dear life" to the DRS when following Carlos, Carlos took it a notch down to keep Lando behind in the DRS range to hamper Perez progress. It was pretty obvious from a look at the live timing, and Carlos himself said so on the team radio. That is also the story behind the tow truck meme. (As mentioned by quite a few in the comments) That you two are still oblivious to this background info tells several podcasts post race tells me that you are dishing out content without doing any research in between. Which is a pity, because I like you guys - your style is very entertaining. If you'd evolve beyond the oblivious fanboy approach and towards thorough analysis, P1 would be awesome.

"just stay within the lines, they are the best drivers in the world". Tbh it says more about how bad the rule/track is. If only 2 o the best drivers IN THE WORLD managed to be inside the rules the whole race says a lot.

I don't mind the track limit penalty. What I don't like is that the warning came too late. Normally you got a warning and doing it 3 times gives you a black and white flag. This time a lot of drivers ended up either already very close to the limit (as in getting black and white) or just a sudden 5s. How can you adjust your driving if the warning didn't come at a timely manner? And of course the driver can be very conservative at a certain corner, but I rather see drivers pushing than trying to be safe. Yes, if there is a wall they will avoid it, but a wall is very easy to spot vs a white line in relation with the tires. In Austria, I don't think it is a case about driver abusing the white line. They know that they are going to be penalized when going off too many times, but it is simply hard to do without an immediate warning because there is no wall as a cue, there is no surface difference as a cue, and during a battle, a driver obviously will push more, thus the likes of Max and Lec who is not really battling, they can pick and choose their line a bit easier. For Yuki, I think it is compounded by the fact that he is short. In previous years he also often times making those line infringement. The visibility on current cars is simply more worse and combined with him being short, he will have a harder time dialing his driving in relation to the lines. It can be done of course, but he will probably have a bit harder time vs others, especially on a track like Austria where a lot of drivers were also exceeding track limit AND it just happen that it was a sprint weekend and the condition from Saturday to Sunday was different, thus less practice time, less lime to adapt to a dry track. Perfect storm for tons of track limit infringement.

The amount of times that I hear: "Ferrari doing Ferrari things" is mindblowing. And the worst part is that we ALL know what that sentence means. However since they don't seem to understand or do anything about it, to me, means they don't have a working internet connection in Maranello.

Just put another line a car's width after the white one an make it out of something that punctures tires. Also, if Carlos was quicker he wouldn't end up like 17 seconds behind Charles and Charles wouldn't be on front row, I'm sorry but a 100% agreed with Matt, it was that triple DRS.

Not that he had to wait 5 seconds for Leclerc to be done with his pitstop, had to overtake 4 cars (was in a battle several times and Leclerc with no one) had the 5 seconds penalty (his fault) but really?? Easily can explain his gap and perhaps if he was given the lead, all that rushing to catch up and make stupid mistake’s would’ve been less. I don’t excuse Sainz for the penalties but it is what it is

The problem with the track limit saga is that they lack the proper tools to enforce it, be it better system to identify and process the infringement, or be it more people looking at this. What they are doing is trying to achieve sth with a far more backward system that it can't handle it, just like how we need proper PC to run modern games.
