Short answer? No. The only reason it was even within a few seconds (still over THREE, formerly known as an eternity in F1) was due to the lateness of the safety car. (And remember that after the Safety Car Max was just casually preserving his tyres)…But it was an EXCELLENT jump by McLaren and maybe they can challenge within the next few races! Don’t know though, RBR has upgrades of their own coming I think as soon as the next race, all of them courtesy of one Mr, Newey, driven by one Mr. Verstappen.
@Appetite4Rose Жыл бұрын
Need to remember that more downforce not only means more dirty air, it means shorter braking zones too, which partly explains why it’s more difficult to overtake… also, they were all pretty much one stopping, putting an emphasis on tyre preservation, partly explaining why they didn’t want to follow closely for too long
@maximbeekenkamp3342 Жыл бұрын
underrated comment, perhaps the FIA should implement rules directed towards a cars impact ie a rule which says a following car can't loose more that 30% of its downforce at a specific distance, instead of trying to restrict the teams on the specific design philosophies they can use when designing the wings
@crit-c4637 Жыл бұрын
Yes, but it also matters where the dirty air is going. The regulations were trying make it so the worst dirty air gets pushed up above following cars by a more streamlined jet of air from the venturi tunnels under the floor of the car. But like always, whether intentionally or just as a knock on effect of pushing for more performance, teams have undone that effect and we're back with excessive dirty air that overheats the tires of following cars.

@laurenmp7486 Жыл бұрын
The issue this year is they changed the ride height of the cars cause Mercedes whined last year. If they don't change that, passing is going to be a lot like last year. And cars generating a ton of downforce from ground effect isn't itself an impediment to close racing, 1990s era CART Indy cars had that and they could race nose to tail lap after lap no problem.

Part of the reason that "if [insert dominant team] wasn't here" thinking doesn't make sense is because when there is a dominant car for other cars to follow, all the other cars recognise it's the dominant route at the same time and start developing towards it. So development-wise all the other cars are in roughly the same space, whereas without the dominant car other cars would continue developing their own unique philosophies making it much harder for slower teams to catch up because there is no philosophy to chase specifically.

@@hipotenuza5663 I always wonder what would have happened if Lewis had kept the inside into the corner where Max overtook him. After that you have 2 long straights with a breaking zone but Merc had terrific straight line speed. And after that there is pretty much no overtaking possible anymore.

@@daarom3472 We'll never know. Ppl don't like my opinion when I say Hamilton lost the championship in Baku. He could have been way ahead of Max before the final race. But he snapped under pressure. And Max already DNF. Maybe it was meant to be the end of Hamilton's dominance.

Gasly went after sainz because he and stroll are cool. This maybe hard to believe for some, but the only ones he doesn’t get along at all are Russell, magnussen and maybe Norris. Dude is super chill and barely has shunts anymore.

It's obvious that the top teams other than RedBull are incredibly closely matched on average and that the track specific characteristics make a huge difference to your overall position in the pecking order. The only new change is McLaren's update has put them into mix. RedBull are in another league and the Williams is a jack of all trades.

I don't think the Brits are self aware enough to grasp it, but there was way more appreciation for the Mercedes dominance and it leading to Hamilton racking up poles and wins, where there seems to be little appreciation for Red Bull and Max doing the same. This isn't new, Vettel was hated by the same lot during his dominant reign, and then was loved once he wasn't actually winning anymore. Acting like NOW the sport is in a terrible spot and is a bore because its Max and not a Brit sitting at the top of the hierarchy is really what people are finding gross. Mercedes was getting 1-2s constantly, 7 straight years of 1-2 in the constructors, and nothing but praise for Lewis. Max is dominating while his teammate isn't and its a problem with Red Bull dominance. The only common thread is the British bias. Its amazing and something to be constantly praised if its a Brit, call him the greatest ever and ignore the dominance of the car, but dare any other nationality be dominant and its ruining the sport and sure he is great but not GREAT and its just the Red Bull being a rocketship, etc etc. Its cringey but don't expect a single Brit to be able to overcome their own bias and lack of awareness. Its a country of narcissists after all.

I think we might be looking at the wrong RedBull seat for Lando. If Verstappen does dip out of Formula 1 like he's made hints at, Lando would be probably the most likely driver for RedBull to recruit in place of Verstappen, given Leclerc and Russell are unlikely to leave their current teams.
@kityhawk2000 Жыл бұрын
He's not going to leave all the time the championships can come this easy. He's pretty much guaranteed to win the next 3 championships any other series and that's a far more uncertain prospect.

On the topic of Lando not defending against Max, whilst I agree that Max's past antics may play on the mind of some drivers, Lando also didn't have the benefit of completely knowing how his car would hold up during a long stint with the new upgrades. Sure he had the race pace at the start, but it was not knowing how the car would behave during the race. If he had more confidence in the car, maybe he would've fought Max a bit more? Would be interested to hear what others think!
@78drea Жыл бұрын
I'm sure it was part of it. It's also a thing at McLaren and with Lando - they know when to fight and always do, what's best for the best possible result. And it's the right thing to do. The RedBull is a faster car and I'm sure Max could have pushed harder when necessary. P1 wasn't on the cards, securing second was their game. And as we saw with Lewis, Lando is perfectly capable of fighting against the best. They did it a lot of times in the past. It's not always the best for the show, but they maximise their result. It was part of the reason they got P3 in the constructors in 2020. It's intelligent and I don't get why they get criticized for it. If he would have fought Max I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have gotten P2 at the end.

I think Lando was playing the long game. Sit behind Max in DRS to clear the Mercs and Ferrari while dragging Piastri along. Best strategy for the double podium thet deserved to get.

Honestly, I really digging the polo, Matt. I think you and Tommy should absolutely wear polos every week.
I've come up with the solution for the sprint races, feel free to claim the idea as your own. Line up in reverse championship grid order for the Sprint race. This would tick all the boxes. It removes the silly 'double qualifying' we currently have on sprint weekends. It gives the fans some guaranteed racing on Saturdays, it doesn't spoil the actual race, and it gives the smaller teams a real shot at points. You'd only do it at certain circuits where overtaking is possible. Tell me that wouldn't be better than what we have now.

That little competition of yours, you got to look at how the points are tallied up there, so saying Norris p1 would be for instance 5 points, while Max would be 1 point for the same, to balance out the odds. Been looking to see if I could find a clip of your reaction when Norris went p1 at the start to no avail =P

It takes the Red Bull a bit to get their front tire temperatures up, so the lead Lando Norris created in the first few laps was just due to tire warmup. Once the Red Bull's tires got up to temperature, the car was quicker. It was great to see someone else lead the race, and I wish it lasted a lot longer that's for sure.

@mattp1tommy, I'm glad tommy said it. A lot of fans dont like to compare Verstappen & Senna with their aggressive driving styles... it was a shame Lando didnt defend harder but its a catch 22. Either they get better tyres and risk a competitive car just driving away more so then they do now or get chewing gum tyres where theres no fighting when a faster cars behind...

About dominance. Take away the dominant team and/or dominant driver then there will be another dominant team and/or driver... A friend of mine once had a couple of small brown trout in his aquarium. One of the brown trout was more aggressive and got most of the food. As a result this trout grew quite large. So large that he even ate some of his smaller brothers and sisters! So my friend removed that large trout from his aquarium hoping the others then had a fair chance... Within a few weeks there was a new dominant brown trout eating his smaller brothers and sisters!

1. McLaren had a marvelous British GP, but Zak Brown was right in saying they need more performances to really tell how good the new car is. Hungary will be a nice challenge and Spa too later this month 2. Sergio Perez is still P2 despite his poor form, Verstappen P1 by a nice margin, and Red Bull P1 in the constructor's by about 200pts. I don't think Horner and Marko will be too quick to get rid of him because of the last 5 races. If he underperforms and the gap in the championship starts to slim down rapidly, it may be a late in the season driver swap. Personally, I think Perez needs the summer break to regroup.

Remember when Tommy asked Matt if his crazy prediction was a red flag in the race or the weekend? That proved to be important! And if you remember, there was a bunch of banter back and forth and the final thing Matt said was half a point for the weekend, full point for the race, so I argue Matt deserves half a point for his crazy red flag prediction.

The interesting thing with Silverstone and the tires was that the lap time delta's between the tires wasn't that great. So, I think that played a role in the end of the race battle between Lando and Lewis.

It's like Max said: it's kinda confusing who's behind me cause it's someone else every race. Therefor I don't think McLaren will be good @ Hungary. That track should suit the AM and Ferrari better. So I won't be surprised if McLaren would drop back in Hungary again. The only one who is quick at every track s Max in that RB. The rest is flipping coins every race.

Regarding Hamilton not attacking Lando more aggresively, I 100% agree with Matt. If he went any harder, his tyres would've been gone and there would've been a big chance he would've fallen off the podium - seeing how Piastri ended up in his DRS by the end of the race.

Regarding the Hamilton bit of the podcast, ‘If you no longer go for a gap that exists, you’re no longer a racing driver’. Lewis hasn’t won so many titles because he learned to back off, but because he was the fastest driver on the fastest car, and thus didn’t really need to make the decision of being aggressive or not.
