I absolutely agree with your observation with the 23 Fuego. I tried spinning them at my local Cabela's and I was blown away by how smooth and light the turning was, like turning a Vanford... But the new Exceler looks way better than the Fuego. I'm very impressed with the upgrades on my 23 Exceler 2500. Daiwa nailed it this time.

Not sure how heavy handled an sluggish the exceler you have is, but mine along with all that I've handled (probably about 50) didn't exhibit this...Same goes for the Fuego (fegl23) I have been fishing the exceler with .6 PE and slow rolling super hydrodynamic lipless baits. I like it over the new certate (jdm 2500 sdh). Grease on the shaft will absolutely gum up a reel and make it sluggish, also too much grease under the oscliation gear will add to it. Combine that with "stay put" lubrication in shielded bearings and voila....all of a sudden you have a heavy handled, sluggish feeling egg beater. The exceler and fuego's are phenomenal values. I like them over the miravel. Flooger and others are just results of whatever tech the chinese factory has available. At least daiwa / shimano are in house designs.

First of all, great to see you again! We should do some kind of video together sometimes.. Now on the the reel - yes, the oscillation gear had some grease, that i removed, if that grease makes touches the frame when its turning its gona add resistance. However I cannot reconcile your report on no resistance on your Exceler with my own observations. Daiwa had 2 more excelers at iCast with exact same resistance. Also several people reported the resistance on their reels to me a few months ago, before i even did this review, so they have not really been biased by me. One gentleman just told me that even his 2500 has too much resistance, and another said the new Regal (same reel) has the same resistance. Maybe u bought a batch that was assembled where the Japanese legalis was assembled, but the reels out for sale right now are pretty tight, and not in a good way.

I've had this issue on a Shimano Soare BB and on the 23 Vanquish. There is a very thin shim between the main gear and main bearing. This shim adjusts the fit between the main gear and the pinion gear. I used a fine diamond sharpening stone to remove 1 to 2 thousandths from the shim and the reel was perfect. No free play and no resistance. The fit is so precise that overtightening the screws in the reel body can add resistance.

Once the reel breaks in the handle can loosen up some on the Daiwas, but that doesn’t bother me so far. I have both the older Exceller 3000 and the 2023 Exceller 3000, both feel smooth like butter. I also have legalis 2000 from 2020 and I can say that the older version is much smoother than the new 2023 version. it will probably work out a bit during fishing. in my opinion, the only difference between legalis vs exceler (in europe) is the color of the reel and the fact that exceler has a screwin handle. eh yes, the new legalis has a more powerful sound clicker : D. The resistance is just high viscocity grease they pack in all bearings. It takes some time to break in, and even when it does, it will never feel as free as a reel with low viscocity grease or oil on the bearings. Shimano does the same thing with their baitcasters, and its pretty annoying to get an aldebaran, and it feel like you're turning the handle that weights 5 pounds.

Received it, and it was the reel that you had to put the most force into to turn the handle. It was so annoying i had to see what's up, so i strip it completely, and every single bearing was filled with ultra thick grease, something i've never seen from daiwa (i mostly buy daiwas or old shimanos which didn't have this annoyance). Its grease 100%. I assume they do this for two reasons. Firstly, it dampens the sound a bearing will make, and secondly, think grease will last longer. Since they don't expect you to ever service a reel, it makes sense, but if you service your reels yearly, its so stupid.

@@ifishcatfish Not sure what happened with my last comment, it disappeared. But yes, its from experience. I bought an Aldebaran mgl 30 about 2 weeks ago, and uppon arrival, the handle had so much resistance i myself thought there was some kind of an issue since i am used to daiwas and older shimanos that never sufference from this. After disassembling it completely, and testing all the bearings, its the damn grease, its much thicker than normal, and there's more of it than before. I assume they do this for two reasons. Firstly, it dampens the sound of every bearing, making the reel more silent. Secondly, because shimano doesn't expect their customers to service their reels, they put a thicker grease because it'll stay on friction parts for longer than a low viscocity grease, keeping the reel "smoother" and more silent for longer.

There may be extra adjusting washers on the main gear. My friend had this on the previous generation of Exceler. The solution is to remove the excess washer; you need to take the thinnest one so that there is no large play in the handle.
@ifishcatfish3 ай бұрын
theoretically this is possible, but that assumes such GLARING INCOMPETENCE on the side of Daiwa, that the probability of this being true is pretty much zero. All reels are like that, and the new Regal is like that too. I just can't believe Daiwa engineers don't know how to shim
@Денис-р5о3з3 ай бұрын
@@ifishcatfish Since the housing is not precision-made, manual adjustment of the main gear backlash is necessary. It is understood that the assembler must install the required number of shims until the backlash is eliminated, but not clamp the main gear to the point of heavy rotation. But apparently Daiwa does not spend money on assembly, limiting itself to installing the same number of washers in each reel. Just yesterday I received a 21 Twin Power XD that had heavy knob rotation and play in the main gear. I replaced the washer in the knob with a thinner one, rotation became easy. A washer will have to be added to eliminate play in the main gear. The reels are not manufactured perfectly and are not assembled perfectly. You just need to come to terms with it.
@ifishcatfish3 ай бұрын
The problem is that in my case i put it back with the same shims and the reel freed up significantly. So the theory you are describing doesn't fit. Also, adding shims to the main gear can only reduce axial free play, but not radial. A reel of the caliber of Twinpower will never have axial free play, i dont care who assembled it. They do have radial free play, but there is nothing you can do about that with shims.

Typical Diawa and Shimano, charging more money for the exact same reel. This is unacceptable.
