طلائع المهنة: المعماريون العرب في القدس الانتدابيّة

تُركّز الكتابات حول العمارة في فلسطين والمنطقة العربية خلال النصف الأول من القرن العشرين، في معظمها، على أعمال المعماريين والمخططين الاستعماريين، ودورهم في بناء وتخطيط المدن العربية. في هذه المحاضرة، يُسلّط ندي أبو سعادة الضوء على أجزاء من كتابه القادم حول أعمال جيل رائد من المعماريين العرب في بدايات القرن العشرين، وتحديدًا المعماريين الفلسطينيين في القدس. حيث يتتبع اللقاء المسارات المهنية للمعماريين الفلسطينيين وتطورها منذ أواخر العصر العثماني وحتى فترة الانتداب البريطاني. وعلى الرغم من أن هؤلاء المعماريين كانوا يعملون في سياق استعماري، إلا أنهم استطاعوا صياغة فهمهم الخاص لمهنة العمارة، كما اعتبروا أنفسهم جزءًا من مسعى أوسع لتطوير مهنة العمارة عربيًا.
كما يستعرض اللقاء الروابط العابرة للحدود بين المشهد المعماري الفلسطيني ونظيره في العالم العربي خلال النصف الأول من القرن العشرين. كما سيتحدث الدكتور نادي عن المعرض العربي الأول في فلسطين 1931-1934.

الدكتور ندي أبو سعادة هو معماري ومؤرخ يعمل حاليًا كزميل لمرحلة ما بعد الدكتوراه في قسم العمارة في المعهد الفيدرالي السويسري للتكنولوجيا في زيورخ. حاز ندي على درجتي الماجستير والدكتواره في العمارة من جامعة كامبريدج. قبل انتقاله إلى زيورخ، عمل ندي زميلًا لما بعد الدكتوراه في برنامج الآغا خان للعمارة الاسلاميّة في معهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا في الولايات المتحدة. شارك ندي في تأسيس مجلة العمران العربي، كما يعمل كمحرر مساهم في مجلة ذي أركيتكتشرال ريفيو في لندن. بالإضافة الى عمله الأكاديميّ، يعمل ندي أيضًا كقيّم ومساهم في معارض حول العالم، بما فيها في البندقيّة ومونتريال، وزيوريخ ودبي ورام الله.

Writings on architecture in Palestine and the Arab region in the first half of the twentieth century have often focused on the legacies of colonial architects and planners in shaping Arab cities and built environments. In this talk, Nadi Abusaada will highlight findings from his forthcoming book on the work and legacies of a pioneering generation of Arab architects, specifically in the context of Mandate Jerusalem. He will trace the professional trajectories of Palestinian architects and their development from the late Ottoman era and their continuities into the British Mandate period. Although these architects were working within the British colonial system, they nonetheless were able to forge their own understandings of the architectural profession and modern architecture. Importantly, they were not working in isolation. They considered themselves part of a broader quest for developing the architectural profession regionally within the Arab world.
This talk will shed light on the transnational connections that linked the first milieu of Palestinian architects with their counterparts in the Arab world during the first half of the twentieth century. Dr. Nadi will also speak about the profoundly important First Arab Exhibition in Palestine, 1931-34.

Dr. Nadi Abusaada is an architect and a historian. He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Architecture at ETH Zürich. Nadi completed his Ph.D. and M.Phil. degrees in architecture at the University of Cambridge. Before moving to Zurich, Nadi was the Aga Khan Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Architecture + Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Nadi is also the co-founder of Arab Urbanism and an editorial contributor at The Architectural Review. He also curated and contributed to research-based exhibitions in Venice, Zurich, Montreal, Dubai and Ramallah.
