2023 DYU Cycles C3 14" Commuter eBike Unboxing and Initial Thoughts Video 1 of a Series

Video Series on this Bike. Lisa from DYU reached out to me on 24 December to see if I was interested in reviewing an electric bike from them. Of course I am!! Final authorization and details were established on 25 December 2023, and the bike was shipped to me December 26, 2023. The Bike arrived on December 28, 2023. This is a Class 2 eBike that contains a Li-ion battery pack with an electric motor and utilizes pedal assist for ease of use. Pedal assist uses the battery and onboard electric motor to help pick up the “slack” from the operator, to make pedaling easier, especially in uphill situations. In addition, this bike also has a throttle assist, so, it can be used entirely pedal-free as well. So, how far can I go on this bike? That’s a great question! Here’s the data I found, so far. This bike is equipped with a 7.5 Amp-Hour, or, 0.27 kWh Lithium-Ion battery pack. The battery is rated at 36V and uses a DC 42V on-board charger and plugs in to the 120V mains. The bike will charge fully in 2-3 hours on basically Level 1 charging. The bike could be charged on 220V as well, but I am not sure the charging time for that. The on-board battery powers the 350W or 0.35kW electric motor. The motor is an AC Synchronous electric motor that is connected to the converter unit that receives signals from either the pedals to provide pedal assist, or, the hand throttle on the right handlebar, similar to a motorcycle. Those signals then go to the motor respective of the path. Ok, so, speed. The bike can travel at a maximum speed of 15.5 MPH and in pedal assist mode, can travel between 20 and 23 miles on a full charge. If you opt to run throttle only, expect a range of 13-15 miles. Throttle only economy is 48 miles per 1 kWh, which is actually really good. A typical EV car averages 4-5 miles per 1kWh, so…
On this bike, we have adjustable handlebar and saddle height, front and rear cable-actuated disc brakes, front and rear LED lighting with active brake lights, a remote power switch and a multifunction switch that controls lighting, and a battery status indicator. Wheels are 14” on aluminum hubs and uses a single-speed derailleur. While the motor is rated at 350W (0.469hp), maximum power output of the motor is regulated to 250W (0.335hp) and delivers 10 NM (7.376 lb/ft) of torque. Those figures don’t seem like a lot, but this is a bicycle, not a true motor vehicle. Being that this is an electric motor, torque is available instantly. The general accepted power range for a typical e-bike is between 250 and 750W, so, the C3 fits right in that area. A bit on the low side, but the bike only weighs about 45 pounds or so.
