It's because you have FileVault on. It adds extra security by decrypting the boot drive only when an authenticated user logs in or you enter the recovery key. I'm sorry bud but you can't recover your data even if you remove the drive from the macbook. A repair shop won't help because they need the recovery key to unlock the drive. Do you remember what you set the recovery key to? Did you write it down somewhere? I assume you didn't because you're asking for help. RIP macbook 🫡 My advice for a future macbook, either write down the recovery key, disable FileVault, or don't enable it in the first place. Windows has a similar feature called BitLocker, but it gets unlocked on boot.

Thank you! I'd accidentally set the log in screen to ask for the username and couldn't remember what it was! Followed the steps to the start of the reset password and it gave me the username so I could log in again.
