Make sure to check your chain slack every 600 miles on your KLR 650. Kawasaki calls for 1.2-1.6 inches of slack or 30 to 40mm. Connect with me on Facebook! / getlostbrandon

Gravity is your friend and legs are stronger than arms.

The adjusters on the gen3 bikes is a stupid design compared to the previous gen. Those two brackets that are supposed to be for measuring on the marks on the swing arm move so much it’s hard to get a correct reading from both sides. I ended up measuring the center of the axle shaft to the end of the swing arm with a tape measure to get the axle lined up centered on both sides to double check the notch marks with those brackets.

I do the same thing. I'm not sure how much it matters but it gives me peace of mind knowing it's as equal as I can get it on both sides.

Are the measurements to the center of the chain ?

you're supposed to find the lowest point in the chain. I measured top of chain at bottom of slack to top of chain at top end of slack. Works the same with the bottom of chain to bottom of chain.
