2023 KTM 890 Adventure R / Welcome To My Nightmare / Initial Thoughts and Review

I just purchased a brand new 2023 KTM 890 Adventure R. Why? Because the Yamaha World Raid is an EU product only. Because the Honda Transalp doesn't come with knobbies. Because 105 HP. Because cruise control. Because I like throwing away my money.
On the 890:
Vanesche Side Stand Dongle
Vanesche GPS Mount
PerunMoto Billet Rack - small
Rottweiler Performance Can Delete
Some cheap ass Chinese levers (just... no)
Doubletake Mirrors
Mosko Moto Nomad Tank Bag

"If the 890R was as reliable as a Honda, everyone would be riding one". Truer words were never spoken! Great review. Keep us updated, please, as things progress. I have 1,000 miles on my 23, no issues yet, though I worry about the bike stranding me if I take a big trip with it. But like you correctly stated, no other ADV bike has the features or performance to match this. The Aprilia might be closest, but the dealer network issue is very real. Keep up the good reviews, we appreciate it.

No issues on my 890R so far either except for a leaking front tyre (wheel sealing, valve or tyre bead). I had a warning flash about fuel level sensor, that was fixed with a software update at 1000Km service and semed to change how the range are presented as well compared to friends 890R's that had not been on service yet. I did not have any problems with the 790R either before i traded it in for the 890. As said, keep it up and congrats to a very nice bike to ADV on. Cheers guys 🍺

@@Braapncamp I wonder if it’s an issue with where or when they were assembled then? I’ve had lemon vehicles before that I had to just cut my losses after the car (BMW) was in the shop every other week for a new issue every single time. But the fact that he said If you have one issue with these bikes, you should immediately take it back and get your money back or get another one, makes me want to steer completely clear of any KTM with electronics. I guess I just like the simplicity of the T7, even though that comes at the expense of the performance of one of these monsters! I’ve ridden my buddy’s 890 Rally, and it’s an absolute savage. I’m glad you haven’t had any issues, and hopefully never do. Keep it pinned brother!

I wanted a small light weight ADV bike to ride in my 60's. So I bought a KTM 390 in Dec. The throttle would just go to idle while riding. Sometimes 20 times in 10 miles. KTM replaced the bike. The new bike did the same. In the end, it was a bad throttle position sensor. It took me 3 months to get a working bike, but I am so happy I stuck it out. The 390, despite critics, is an unbelievably capable bike both on and off road. I am leaving in a week to ride the NMBDR with a friend. Stick it out, John, it'll be worth the effort. But, come on KTM, get your quality under control. Maybe you need to fire some people and hire a Japanese Six Sigma expert! Seriously!

@@JohnTYoung I’m rooting for you and the bike. I’m a total Honda Fanboy, but since they sort of refuse to build a “Halfrica” Twin, I’ve been looking hard at KTM. Currently, I’m on the fence between getting a bike that’s too heavy and too top heavy for my abilities off road (Africa Twin) or the 890/890r and worrying about reliability. One last thing, did you ever consider the Base 890?

I bought a 450RL partly because of your videos but I went the T7 route for the second stable mate. I don’t plan to push the T7 as hard as some do, I guess. No jumps or fast single track is in the plans for it, just forest roads, mnt passes and highways. It handles the baby heads and ledges really well in stock suspension form and I don’t ever worry about its reliability. The ‘Whew!’ at the end of the video when it started was classic.

We appreciate you taking one for the team, I really want a 890r but I am skeptical, not wanting to be stranded 4 hours from a dealership. I f they were mechanical gremlins like the rear shock deal they had a while back, that I can fix but all the electrical issues I would be helpless without the software etc. I kept my Rl for short trips and took the Tenere pill for longer trips and after a few dollars and getting a feel for the altered weight load, single track isn’t bad. Had the Aprilia Tuareg 660 and really liked it (tubeless tires, great electronics, carried its weight low) but eventually sold it after buying my 450L, (much easier to pick-up and I can take it places I wouldn't dare take a 450 lb. bike - I know my limitations), which I'm now selling in anticipation of the delivery of a KOVE 450 Rally (better road manners allegedly and has switchable ABS). Eventually, that will be sold as I try another bike yet to be manufactured. Trying new bikes brings me joy and I hope this KTM eventually brings you a great deal of happiness. I'm currently deciding whether to go back to Beemers or an Africa Twin now we are moving to Scotland. so no more trail riding hence my 300 rally going. I didn't have to take your advice because I had already done it! Bought a '22 890 ADV July of 2022. I didn't have nearly as many electrical issues as you do but I couldn't get around the bike either not starting or only starting on 1 cylinder multiple times until I'd blip the throttle. And it didn't matter if the outside temp was cold or not. The bike didn't even have 200 miles on it. Butted heads for over 2 months between the dealer and KTM. They finally bought it back. I found a different dealer selling another '22 890 ADV and bought it in October of 2022. It's got over 2,000 miles now and starts on 2 cylinders every time! It really depends on the manufacture date with KTMs. Their quality control sucks and it shows but it really is the best fun midweight ADV bike out there!

I was a KTM avoider until 2019when I bought a 500 to convert into an adventure bike but like you, dislike it’s road prowess and bought a 690. For me, age is the No 1 factor so weight has become the main obstacle and the 690/701 is now my weight limit. Here in Australia you can get an electronic cruise control for it so with a modified seat and screen it’s half a thing on the road. Keep up the reporting as your style is pretty unique and very relatable. One other thing, the fact that Nomad sent that tank to you indicates your standing as the world’s pre eminent 450L owner.

Sorry to learn of your issues! Maybe this is one reason why it takes Honda for forever to deliver a new motorcycle model with all gadgets and gizmos. A maturity concern. I got my 2023 890 Adventure standard late April and have now done >5.700 kilometers. I bought it because of >55.000 almost faultless kilometers on a 2019 1290 Super Adventure. Only problem I had with it was after a battery replacement. That issue was solved by reconnecting the battery. This time around, wanted something lighter, and was not done with KTM. And the 2023 890 just looked the par, besides all the rest. I've had one issue with the 890 this far. The cruise control went dead right after a wash. Twice. It comes back when it dries up. New clutch cluster will be replaced under warranty. It seems the factory is aware of this so if anyone else gets the same issue with the CC, well you know. I hope things will be fixed and you can begin to enjoy it! Just hit me, I've been told there is a reboot sequence in the bikes. So if one gets stuck, disconnecting the battery for 20secs or so, then reconnect will initiate a boot sequence with additional trouble shooting. Oh I should add, I've had much more issues with new beemers than with my two KTMs. Just sayin' :)

I want to trade my Africa Twin for an 890 so badly but your experience is what I fear the most. I ride solo and frequently end up a long way from anybody, including cell service. I can't worry about the bike not starting/running when I hit the button. I know a LOT of people have zero issues with KTM ADV bikes but more than a few do. My dirt bike is a KTM 500EXC and been flawless but.... So for the time being, my AT will have to suffice but man do those 890s look about perfect for my style of riding.... Yeah I've just done the same thing here in Australia. Bought a new 2022 KTM 890 Adventure R (see my review on my channel). After 3 years on the T7 sold it for the KTM. Did my research and knew most of the issues these bikes have, and still have. One of the main issue being the cam shaft. My bike with only 250ks on the clock decided to run on one cyclinder. The bike when running is a great bike so much than my T7, but zero issues with the T7. It is really poor that KTM has not yet sorted these issues and for the money we pay it's not good enough for a modern bike. I will most likley sell mine after 12 months I just don't have the confidence in reliability. Anyway all the best with your bike.

My 22 ktm 500 is endless fun, and now that you have an 890, you already appreciate their engineer's capacity to make bikes fun, it keeps surprising me. Like you, even with a $600 seat upgrade on my 500, it can be tough on longer road stretches. In the end, it's how much dirt vs how much pavement, bottom line. Since I'm in the dirt a lot, the 500 can't be beat, it's near perfect for my skill level. My buddy who's ridden his whole life is dumping his T7 and ktm 350 for a 500 after riding mine while we're out. He does long stretches including the continental divide. But, neither of us are looking to do hardcore pavement pounding. I hope in the end the 890 issues are worked out and you can bring some new content for us in your new riding style. All the reviews I have watched have claimed that the KTMs are incredible when they are running properly. Last year I researched mid-sized ADVs to decide on what to purchase in the spring of 2023. I went back and forth between the Tiger 900, the KTMs and the Yamaha Tenere 700. In the end I made my decision based on the two most important factors to me: Reliability and large dealer network/parts availability. I bought a 2023 Tenere 700. @@JohnTYoung 😁 Sorry Mate, nothing personal. My gripe is with manufacturers that push "tech" faster than it can prove itself. Unlike the bike's mechanicals, the gimmicks are immature technologies, and gets updated faster than it can mature. Why don't they offer an 890 without all the crap? Then the sycophants can pay to play with toys an sensors and settings while the rest of us can enjoy riding? If we demonstrate our unhappiness in sales numbers, perhaps the "advancements" will slow down, to match the rate of reliability improvements.

I did have one issue with a defective switch for my accessory heated seat. It broke after two rides and KTM won’t cover it. I ordered it but KTM said no eta on delivery. So I hope I can get it before it gets cold again. There aren’t many options out there to compete with the KTM890. The entire bike runs through a CAN Bus communication protocol system, which is quite sophisticated, and makes me nervous if I ever have to troubleshoot it. All mods costs me less than 2000$ and I made a lot. But after 3 years of use I made 19k km and looking for something different. I was thinking about 890 ADV R thinking that this 2023 model must be better then previous. I don't need this all TC, ABS and Cruise control. Interesting to hear your review! I am interested in the 901 Expedition. My friend just bought a 2023 Adventure R my cousin has a 2022 Adventure R I have a 2021 T7 with 25,000 miles on it and absolutely no issues whatsoever! I have ridden the TAT, some of the continental divide trail, the Alpine loop and other trails in CO, Moab’s Hells revenge & Slickrock. ETC I have a full exhaust system and a ECU reflash, and one tooth larger in the rear. I drag raced my cousin’s 2022 adventure r. The T7 has a very low first gear, so I took off in 2nd gear. My front tire was 3 feet in front of his until 77 mph, then he started to pull away from me. I love the torque curve of the T7. No matter the RPM’s when you crack the throttle you have power on tap. I can takeoff in 3rd gear and wind it out to 75 mph in 3rd. It doesn’t wheelie as easily as the 890 but I have popped it up in 3rd shifted to 4th and ridden a wheelie out to 82 mph. I have purchased some heavier, progressive springs front and rear and look forward to installing them. I’m 168 lbs, 53 yrs old I have heard that the T7 flat trackers are tuned to get 90 hp!! I love the T7 and probably will not sell it but I am interested in a 901 Expedition. I hope it doesn’t have too many issues. I have a 2018 KTM 1290 SAR, my son has a 2023 390 Adventure and two friends have 890's. The 390 has only 500 miles so that doesn't count and the only problem I've had with mine is once when new the gas cap wouldn't unlock but once I got home it did. Hasn't happened again in 4 years but was nervous for a few weeks after. The other two 890's haven't had any problems. Being a motorcycle dealer awhile back getting a new replacement bike after a few problems realistically isn't going to happen. First the dealer guys have to exhaust all efforts. Then the factory guys will show up and completely tear apart the bike. If they can't fix then, and only then, you might have a chance of getting a new replacement bike. I've been through this process with another manufacturer when I was a dealer. One person was offered his money back.

Sorry to hear about the problems with the new bike. My 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R has almost 5000 miles on it with zero mechanical or electrical issues. I also ride with a guy on a 2022 KTM 890 R with over 5000 miles and he has had zero problems as well. I know you don’t probably care, but they aren’t all breaking down. Just rode with a big group of adventure bikes in Texas and there were many KTM haters. The only bike that broke down that weekend was a T7. I’m a big fan of the T7 and would have bought one if they were more available in 2021. Just need some honest balance that KTMs do have more mechanical issues then Yamaha or Honda, but the gap is not nearly as big as the internet posts will have you believe.

I had a Husqvarna Norden 901, essentially the same bike. It went through multiple gearbox repairs and when that didn't fix the issue a new motor and the issue remained. This is on top of multiple engine management warning lights and many other issues. I eventually handed it back and received a full refund. Prior to the Husky I had a KTM Super Duke GT. It broke down on my first trip 500 km from home. It cost me a good some of money to get it home and then to the dealers. Zero compensation. Then the engine was found to have swarf left over and numerous other issues. As soon as warranty was done it was gone. Trouble is just love the design criteria of KTM...get the quality control right and they could be the best bikes out there IMHO. At present it's hit or miss with them. I ride Triumph now. Never a problem.

Thank you so much for being brave and whistle blowing on ‘big orange’ 🍊😂 Unless you are a competition racer replacing the springs on the T7 would have been enough. It would not make it less top heavy and I would still go for a high exhaust routing but that would be enough. 75 hp is all you need off road(thats what pros are saying) on the street it will do 130 mph. I have no patience for being stranded in torrential rain or desert heat which is what we have here way too often in Israel 🇮🇱 🍻🍻

Nope, I am 100% done with KTM. I've reviewed it a 1000 different ways, but I plan on riding remotely and simply cant stomach the idea of being 100 miles from nowhere and it wont start because of a software glitch with a key fob. Thanks for saving me from a horrible situation and financial nightmare.

I have a '23 890 Adventure (non-R) I purchased with all of the Rally Pack included - forget the demo mode. At its 600 mile dealer service, the KTM dealer her in Virginia told me that there were two different motor electronics software upgrades that they performed on May 25, 2023. The quickshifter seemed to work better (a bit smoother) afterward. So after 2200 miles now, I have had Zero Problems.

Kudos on your vid and review. Spot on. I upgraded from a 2020 790 Adventure to a 2023 890R. I had the Tech pack and heated grips installed. Love the suspension and handling improvements over the 790. Only glitch is that I'm getting more mileage out of my Motoz Adventure tires than my clutches. 11565 miles since February with at least 50% of that dirt. Just installed my 4th clutch pack while on the WABDR. I've checked the oil jet and drive shaft check valve and seem to be getting good oil flow. (790/890 clutches are a wet/dry clutch that rely on oil from a jet wetting them rather than sitting in an oil bath. I bleed orange. I'm using the clutch the same as my other 4 KTMs. I went with the Recluse Radius X (manual clutch) hoping to get better service. It lasted 672 miles. To Recluse's credit they are replacing the clutch pack under warranty. I'm continuing with the 890 trying to ride keeping the revs up (higher oil pressure and less strain on the clutch) and turning off the electronic assist when off-roading. Regardless, on any long trip, I'll include a spare clutch pack just like the spare tubes we carry.

Here’s my story: Sold my AT 1100 2019 for the 890 Adv “s”; ever since I got it it has visited the dealer 4 times: Engine check problem telling fault on ABS and fault on Traction Control. Lastly the sensor for the key has a fault turning off completely (even when the bikes going) the bike. Now I will sell it, and never ever going back to KTM…on the other side; yes, it has been the most fun bike i’ve ever had, I just don’t want to be left stranded on the side of the road no more…so sad

Heads up! I haven't read what others have posted, and I'm only 3 minutes into your video. Going to watch the rest BUT! I want to say, my brother had the immobilizer issue with his '22 Norden. He's at 24k miles now. I hope they can fix it for you! The dealership replaced his ignition system under warranty and he hasn't had an issue since. You are correct, it is an issue with the chip in the key not being read correctly.

Instant subscribe for the "you better be happy there - because you're not going anywhere" - part - and the chick who's in prison once a month. Just yesterday ordered a new chain/sprocket set for my 1999 Honda CB500 naked bike here in Latvia (jesus the prices... last time I ordered from Germany - was EUR 60, now it's EUR 100). Need to start riding again. Because two cars just don't bring the satisfaction I crave and deserve :D :D Either way - thanks for the update on this Austrian/Chinese wonder - best of luck in sorting it out from Latvia.

Hi John. I know 3 blokes who've bought these here in the UK. They all swear by them, not at them. Never had a moment's trouble. Sometimes you just drop on a bad one. Me, I love em, and I think they're a great looking bike too. I've heard some blokes say they're ugly. Can't see it myself. Beauty's in the eye of the beholder I guess.

Race Tech Gold Valves and install runs about $1K plus shipping. Hardly $3K worth of suspension, but probably puts the T7 between the 890 and 890R. Off road, it's a straight up push, because no one is using 100hp in the dirt. It is an interesting dilemma of living in the golden era of ADV bikes: buy the affordable T7 and get it dialed for less than the 890R stocker, or just rip the band-aid of financing off and go for broke. My early third choice is the 901 Exp. Good times, indeed.
