I got the 890 a few weeks ago. after only 400 miles I started having the issue with cold starts and had to start it 5 times one morning. The problem is that it only starts on 1 cyl and and the other one doesnt go until it warms up. Adding a little throttle on start seems to help but definitely an absurd issue for a brand new bike...

Have an 1190 Adv MY 2013 which was the first year edition. Side stand spring and air filter changed on factory recall, plus moisture in one turn signal fixed on warranty. One leaking fork seal at 63 000 km and ball bearing in front wheel at 72 000 km. Sprockets and chain changed twice. The rest is just normal service and now I have happily reached the 80 000 km mark. I go long camping trips ranging from weekend- to several weeks long and preferably on small roads, gravel of various quality and down to bigger (in case I have to turn the beast around ; ) ) trails. Love the bike and with Mitas E07+ it is quite capable for my needs.

The rear rotor did the same thing on my 2020 790. I was able to get it covered by warranty as it damaged the caliber bracket. I've also have issues here and there with curse not staying engaged, normally it will be fine the next day. Glad to know my is not the only one that takes three tries to start in the mornings! Very annoying Otherwise, I'm REALLY loving the bike. I had a Versys 650, and Concours 14 before it and it is by far my favorite motorcycle. The only thing I'd like to add to this video is that you should make sure to get a skid plate that bolts onto the foot peg brackets. The foot peg bracket on the right side bolts to the engine and people have reports that if they hit that peg pretty hard on something. It rips the bolt off the engine and takes a chunk with it.... The really good skid plates will bolt up to that bracket to keep it from moving.

@@andre899 I have had only one other bike - a KLR 650 and, at least according to the manual, it is completely different on how to check the tension - On the KLR you simply measure the distance of the chain from the arm - the KTM manual talks about pushing up the chain and measuring the slack on the high and low end - maybe I am stupid, but I don't get it - and I have searched this on line and several other KTM owners are confused by this manual as well - and to date, I have not seen a simplified explanation.
@0xsergy4 жыл бұрын
@@onesharpboradhead check the total chain travel from the highest position to the lowest pushing up and down on the chain. not just down, not just up. both directions. one way to make absolutely sure when you're done setting is to just unbolt the shock real quick and just move the wheel and swingarm thru its travel arc. you can check the chain at various positions that way. it's a good idea to do this on any new motorcycle cause manuals sometimes specify settings that are a bit on the tight end.

However, if i turn the key off, 9x out of 10 it starts off as set, the other it starts up with rally throttle, which I really don't like, but still with off-road abs. Your cruise control and not starting when in gear is due to the clutch switch. I managed to make mine work intermittently, but loosening the screws on the switch. Replaced under warranty, all fixed. I’m sorry to hear it. I’ve had no bother with mine in the 12.5 yrs and 60,000+ miles I’ve ridden it and I was considering a 790 as I thought it might be more manageable off road. The electronics on these modern bikes worries me as to their long term reliability but you don’t expect engines to go pop. Certainly not twice! Recently I test rode a Himalayan and I thought this would do me especially along side the KTM, so early next year I’ll look out for a used one. How do you rate the Himalayan and does it cope with the places you ride in? I look forward to seeing more videos of your off road antics, ride safe.

Still I put a lot of gadgets on it, lower and upper crash protection from TT (an extra support of the original skid plate solves its problem IMHO, Roxy risers (I’m 196 cm tall - 6ft 5’), had the seat redone (4 cm taller and wider for touring), Garmin XT in a TT lockable mount, extra led spotlights. A completely different story than my GS, but love it right now, especially for how it handles off-road. Keep the good job here on YT, best regards from Poland.

Nice review Brett! The attention to detail on the 790s/r is indeed stellar. Three things missed in all reviews including this one; First, brake pedal thickness is offset and and can be flipped 180o quickly by removing one bolt. I like the thick side up-makes it easier to apply the brake while standing. Next, unlike most bikes the KTM includes a steering damper that greatly helps front end twitch in rocks, sand and deceleration from high speed. Finally, although not necessary, there's an embossed "sag" mark on the left rear side pannel that provides an easy reference point for setting ride height. A few other nice details other reviewers have noted are the easy access air cleaner, battery and fuse box, adjustable seat height, windscreen, clutch and front brake levers and of course the tubeless wheels are the icing on the cake. Speaking of wheels, most people seem to focus on the convenience of no tubes but that's only part of the story. Inner tubes not only add unsprung weight and make roadside flat repair a pain, but the gyroscoping weight increase of tubes noticably effects direction changes, ie handling. If you don't believe it, stuff a tube in the front wheel of your 790 and take it for a spin! I've ridden my 790s for nearly a year with the only issue being a slight pulsing in the front brake while braking at very slow speeds. Im keeping an eye on that. I recently rode the MABDR and 1600 miles of the TAT and the bike was stellar. Of the 20 plus bikes i've had over the years this is by far the most ridable and comfortable (next to my 990 adv and F800gs). By comparrison the Africa Twin is a nice street bike but doesn't come close to matching the off road capabilities of the 790-and routine mainenance is a nightmare (try getting to the battery on the honda). Now the T7 is another story. If it was available a year ago it would have been a tough choice between it and the KTM.

Great job Bret. I have owned several KTM’s in varying models and have learned they can be quite quirky for lack of a better word. I’ve been waiting to pull the trigger on the KTM adventure and I’m hoping that they’ve learned from the 790 and have made appropriate changes on the 890. It reminds me of the days of the KTM 950 and the issues we were having and then came along the 990. Most of the issues rectified but not all of them. Those of us that had the 950 suffered a bit unfortunately. That being said those were two incredible machines in the end. KTM is always trying to improve their machine annually so it seems they are utilizing the consumers as the R&D team which is unfortunate for the owners of the earlier model year machines. This is absolutely a non-professional opinion just a personal observation with my experience with KTM. Thank you very much for the honest reviews. No doubt the 790 is great handling and enjoyable ride when it doesn't have issues that stop it from being rideable. 1 month worth of warranty repairs is unacceptable on a 5 month old bike. I agree with what others have said about the brakes being dangerous enough to warrant a manufacturer recall. All the gizmos in the world won't save you if the brakes fail when you really need them. thx for this Bret. Based on videos from you and other reviewers I eventually settled on the standard 790 Adventure which better suits my riding applications. I realised (after just coming from a totally trouble free 65,000 kms 2014 Vstrom 1000) that there will be a chance of issues on this kTM, I certainly don't expect the clockwork reliability of the Vstrom, but I had to decide whether I was willing to gamble a little. Since the Tenere 700 has been in short supply here in Australia and is almost an identical price to what I paid for the last of the 790 Adventure S's, the idea of cruise control, tubeless tyres and the electronic wizardry won me over. PLUS they gave me deals on cruise control and Rally mode to further entice. As a late 60s guy who will do more blacktop and nice dirt tracks (usually alone) I'm more than a little confident that I don't test the bike's capabilities on rough stuff the way many younger R riders do. 3,000 kms later and no issues to this point.

Is there no one accessable within KTM to get an honest response about these items? Why do we have to stand stand around and have a "guess fest" about how and why the traction control works, (or not) as it does? I really want to buy one of these and am waiting for the 890 but this great discussion is really giving information that is making me reconsider... How in this day and age do brake rotor bolts loosen, and destroy the caliper on a new bike - and not have it quickly taken care of as a warranty issue!! I'm sorry for your troubles Brett, but, as posited, by it happening to you with your access to the KTM "public", perhaps KTM will take notice and take action... and if wishes were fishes, we'd all be well fed!

I have a 690 enduro r and really like it for 90% of the riding that i do. The 10% that I don’t like is highway speeds. This is where the 690 really shows it’s limitations for me. At speeds 70+ the front end starts to feel disconnected from the road. It’s not a wobble. It just feels so light that it feels sketchy. I’m considering trading it in on the 890 adventure r next year. The 690 is so good off-road though and I’ve finally got it set up just the way I wanted it to be. Wish I knew someone with a 890 so I could compare the two. I would hate to trade in the 690 and not be as happy with the 890. My only concern is the extra 100 pounds the 890 carries. Good informative review 👍

Great video as usual, it was this video that was the tipping point for me to actually purchase the 890R that now resides in my garage, and I could not be any happier so far. I bought the extended warranty, and if stuff goes wrong it will be fixed. But right now, I can honestly say the 890R is like cheating when off road, simply outstanding on the pavement and the overall fit and finish is excellent. A huge, and I mean huge upgrade form my Africa Twin. Thanks Brett!

A lot, if not all of the negative issues Bret had on this bike, I won't be having simply coz most or all of them happen either off-road, which I won't be doing, or during a stoppie or other crazy acts, also which I won't be doing. And the fact that they are now assembled in China, I hear from a lot of reviewers, you can't tell the difference. Keeping in mind that the BMW F750 motor is also made in China. So no worries, happy days from now on. :)

Great review. My 2019 790R has 14,500 mile, and it’s only issue so far was a failed fuel sender replaced under warranty. Mine stays in Rally mode and “off-road” ABS, and it holds these settings when I turn it off. Smooth at 124 mph, but lots of wind noise (I have the Rade’s windscreen and winglets removed). Cruise control is awesome! The 890 Rally looks awesome, but I’m happy keeping my 790R, plenty of power with Rally throttle.

If you downsize from a GS, the 890 will sure be a lighter bike. However if you upsize from an enduro 350 the 790 will be a big beast. If you ride single track without buddies and you drop it, believe me you’ll not looking for an 890 with an additional 9 kg. Sure the additional torque will be welcome but a smaller front sprocket might be an alternative. Depending on your riding style, the 890 might be a better bike. Myself, after a lot of 790 riding is not envy of 890 owners.

Wow! I purchased my 2020 KTM 790 Adventure R in January of 2020, and I have had no problems with my bike so far.... Except for the rear caliper brake line recall, and the sticky or failed front brake switch that failed closed. So then my cruise control would not work, because the computer was thinking I was applying the brakes. Both problems were recall issues, so no out of pocket expenses, thankfully. After 15 years riding my old reliable 1999 DR650, this bike, the 790 has me riding like a kid again. Total game changer with the traction control, and the ABS. Love this bike! Happy Trails!!

I'll take the tip on the holes in the front sprocket protection. Thanks! Moreover, I agree on SW-Update to keep settings where possible (some are by regulations necessary). My remedy in general is switching it off with the kill switch instead of the key when offroad. Then it keeps settings. Mine is a European 2019 model R. Except the brake line recall nothing wrong. My updates were also BDCW bash plate (plus trail stand), BDCW footpegs, BDCW rear rack plus Triple Clamp head straight. Really good and honest review. I was doubting buying a 790R or a Tenere 700. Tried both of them. Found out through internet the issues you mentioned as well as possible issues with the clutch and the rear shock which can fail because of heating by the catalyst which is just below the shock. Because of all these potential issues I decided to go for the T700 and after several months I do not regret it. Great bike with no issues at all.

Good for you, mate! I was on the same fence, rode both bikes, hated the ever living crap out of the lame poop MT-07 sewing machine of an engine on T700, hated the weight picking the bike up - and, conversely, loved both of that + electronics + position and control on KTM - so, 790 it was for me. Aside from the rear brake line recall (done at 1000km/600mi service) - no issues. Whereas the issues of T700 I've listed - they are its features, you are facing them all the time, vs occasionally some with KTM. The catch might be, I have a "european" bike, coming with LED blinkers - a slightly different assembly protocol (some assemblies are done more carefully too, e.g. gear linkage), which might be a contributor. Not gonna lie, the "what if it fails" visits me - but it did so on my previous Versys 650 (where, despite platform's stability, I had to warranty replace valve cap), so hey, that's mental issue of a mechanic, I suppose. As long as the bike makes you smile and you have fun riding - cool, have fun!
@marks5694 жыл бұрын
@@UndeadLol4ever For sure fun riding is most important. But with what I cannot cope with is when I am driving alone in the middle of nowhere having this little voice in the back of my head saying what if the bike quits on me because so with other peoples bikes. We all know Murphy's law. Had the same with a Ducati Multistrada in the past which I turned at the end in for a Japanese no thrills bike and never problems. Yamaha took 4 years to develop and make the T700 up to his job and they fully succeeded. Better than launching a bike too fast and then have to relaunch a new version only years later to solve issue.

On the verge of buying a 24' KTM 790, coming from a 390 ADV, no issues with the 390. After watching/reading many reviews I'm starting to get the sense that KTM is cleaning things up and the 23+ models are certainly more reliable. I'm not really concerned that the new 790 Engine is made by CF Moto, I actually think/hope it's going to be quite reliable. Cf Moto has a lot on the line to make a good impression and from what I've seen so far the Fit and finish is quite good. Time will tell of course, but I'm willing to take a chance.

I have a 790R 2020. Is a fair review. I don't agree with all stated or have the same issues as Brett, but I think it is a fair review. If you want premium electronics, premium suspension, an amazing motor and just a really high performance on and off road in-class vehicle, ya, you have to roll the dice a bit more than other manufacturers. I LOVE my 790R though. I'll go ahead and disagree with Brett on the fairing. I'm 6' as well with 32" inseam. The buffeting at 55 MPH plus is huge no matter what you set the fairing on. I'd say wind buffeting at highway speeds is the thing I've had the most trouble with. Played with Givi spoiler which helped just a bit, but still not good. I'm disappointed in any manufacturer that doesn't stand behind their build. Agree with others who said if Brett is having trouble, just imagine how difficult it would be for average people with KTM. That is disappointing to hear and will definitely factor in when I buy my next bike.

Great video as always. Welcome to the KTM early adopter club! I am in the same boat with my 790 although mine has less miles and less issues so far. My very first bike was/is an '83 Honda XL200R I bought a few years ago and I've never had a single issue with it minus a blinker wire come loose. Now I have a 1995 DR350SE that I've had for about a year now and it starts right up every time, although I've had a couple loose wires on this as well but thankfully the kickstart can bypass most electrical issues to at least get me home. If there's one thing I've learned is the more complex something is the more there is to go haywire. The simpler the bike the better for me, but I do a ton of solo exploring in Oregon and reliability is #1 for me

Brother, thank you SO much for making this honest and balanced video. I was about to buy one of these, but the snapped rear brake caliper and loose rotor rivets ended that idea. For God's sake, the brakes fail??? That's an inexcusable safety issue. Just for comparative ha-ha's, I have a 2009 Harley-Davidson Super Glide, 52,000 miles... only thing that ever failed, other than normal wear and tear, is an 11$ relay. And I have a 2011 Suzuki DR-650 with 35,000 miles... only thing that ever failed, other than normal wear and tear, is the choke cable, which on the 2nd failure, I replaced with a carb-mounted "plunger-type" choke knob. Problem solved. I love the KTM 790 Adventure for it's outstanding capabilities, but all those issues... ESPECIALLY the brakes... I'll pass. I was going to sell the Harley (and maybe even the DR-650) and get the KTM 790 Adventure S (combine two very different bikes into one "'overall" bike), but for a "higher-end bike" and all the hoop-la it's getting, your list of failures on the KTM s completely unacceptable...again, especially the brakes. I think I'll wait and see if the new KLR 650 materializes, I have a KLX 250 that I like right now. I watch the WESS hard enduro videos and those 2-stroke KTMs and Husqavarnas are just awesome machines.

@@strokenumber3 I had the same concerns but threw caution to the wind and got a 390. So far no problems at ~1200 miles, but 90%+ street use. If it makes it to 5K miles without any big failures, I'll call it good. TBH, I would be more accepting of problems at the 390's $6100 price point than at what the 790/890 are going for. Those brake rotors coming loose are just unacceptable on any bike, even a Chinese scooter. C'mon KTM.

Nice review Bret. I’m a KTM fan but have had many different bikes. I’ve had all of these issues on my Japanese bikes as well, including going through two sets of loose rotors on my gsxr race bike. It happens when you ride them hard.

Please state what issues and what Japanese bikes. Every 790 video I see they all seem to have starting issues.

Really glad I watched this video. I’m retiring in a year & want to do TAT, BDRs, etc. Thinking I’ll go with the Yamaha, there will be used ones by then & given their reliability, seems like a perfect bike. I have had 6 KTMs & love them but this is too much to have to deal with especially if I’m out in the hinterlands. Thank you for telling it like it is with the 790R.
