On 1 July, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Co-Chair of the Global Commission on the Economics of Water, delivered the biennial McDougall Memorial Lecture at the 43rd Ministerial Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). He spoke about various issues on the nexus of water mismanagement and food insecurity, the governance shifts, and technological solutions required to tackle the crises, and the opportunities for national and global economic growth by addressing the crises.

Let me just share, growing up in in early days of hearing threats from Mahatir to removing water rights until we have our own Marina Barrage and New Water, Singapore has progressed. Of all the countries in the world, we are most susceptible to threats of water loss, food sustainability. We take our food an water security seriously. Honestly, thank god for a good government and strong policies. .

⁠⁠@@alvin1979wong⁠⁠some voters demand independent non-PAP even if opposition kill babies and the PAP don’t. Voters with ingrained bias based not on logic or evidence, but blind hate and prejudice due to pride and irrationality. It’s clear Tharman had done well and the PAP has too - everywhere chaos except Singapore, even when Europe, the U.S. and a China have struggles. @franciscody9622 may not even be Singaporean, could be one of those who oppose Tharman’s points on helping the developing world - not helping the less fortunate - and love starting wars. Why? If anyone is proud going against helping people and would only be proud if a politician doesn’t help the developing world and achieve peace, either that person is psychotic or an AI posting automatically

@@waiwonching7958 Tharman owes his career (and his wealth) to the PAP. Will this restrict him as EP? Not known with certainty. Tharman has also never mentioned he disagreed with PAP on anything.

@@ss-qf6kl LKY is wrong. Singaporeans are Singapore since they are the only real asset of the country. Singapore is not a "red dot" at the tip of the Malay Peninsula with an economic statistic (GDP) attached to it. Singaporeans are not "tools" to be used by politicians for the "bragging rights" to high GDP.
