2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV First Drive

The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the best-selling PHEV SUV on the planet... and oddly enough, there is some notion of Evo-heritage baked in there. That sounds crazy, I know. But after driving this thing on a race track and getting it to go tail-out through corners, my assumed notions have shifted.

I like it! The Outlander hasn't been this good in nearly 20 years! Best of luck getting that Cummins turbo diesel motor into the Montero, Jeff! That seems like a perfect project for an SUV you have fallen in love with.

We were supposed to do some proper off-roading but it rained about 8” before we arrived and swamped the course. So they let us do this instead, which was good fun

Completely agree on the steering feel. Tarmac mode is where it's at for road driving. Unfortunately this forces the gas engine on unless you use the paddle shifters to go to B1 or B0 for regenerative braking.

Mitsubishi wanted to outclass honda by constructing a passenger aircraft which costs billions and failed. Plane flew but they ran out of money to get it certified.

The electric side is designed for short trips, yet the vehicle is designed for comfort of longer trips. The vehicle would be much more usable if it had 125klm pure electric range. That's the reason I didn't buy one.

I did think the brakes were a little delayed when I pressed the pedal in for the first time. Think I'll get used to it though, and hoping to use 1pedal alot anyway.

I heard this car runs out of torque above 100km so over taking on highways becomes dangerous.did you find this ?

Nah nothing like that, overtaking is piece of cake. I have a 2022 which is basically lesser torque than 2023 , but overtaking is easy peasy in normal mode. It turns into a beast once you put into tarmac . Test drive one!

Have the 2023 and in power mode overtaking is a cinch. Only time it may not be is when in Eco-Mode or up hills when the battery is totally depleted.
