I've ridden the 297 and the 290. The first felt more like a beefed up trail bike. I prefer the 290, feels a bit more like riding on rails. So far the 290 is probabliy my favorite DH bike I've tested and now own. Very versatile. Stable yet still playful, espacially compared to high pivot bikes.

Don't own a DH anymore, but demo'd several DH bikes at winter park 3 years ago. Commencal full 29 was like you described, on rails. Was blown away.

The nukeproof is the shortest bike on the market right now. It's very nimble even the full 29er I tested, I liked it Suspension setup is a mess though but there are many options to check

Yes this is my favourite dh bike i've owned so far. The only creak i've had is from the rear shock bolt which for whatever reason didn't have any loctite on it (As stated in the manual). In the default setup its plush on the first 1/3 of travel, nice mid support and nice bottom out resistance. Compared to my sender (Which feels harsher and less plush) and dominer (Which blows through travel too easily) with the same spring rate's. I've got guide re instead of code r's which are a lot more bitey. If you want to get into dh it's a really great bike with no real negatives. well-balanced and easy maintenance.

I was thinking that, my XL enduro bike has a reach of 522 and I would've thought that I'd want even longer on a DH bike. A whole 40mm shorter feels like I'd be cramped

I don't understand your issues with the rear suspension. You say that even in the most linear setting, it felt too regressive and too eager to get into the first bits of suspension. Why not go for a stiffer spring and more progressive setting then?
