I have been in quite the reading slump since about mid-2022 (don't get long Covid, it sucks) but one of the books I did manage to read all the way through last year was The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. I read through it so quickly, I was amazed that it just grabbed me and kept hold of me all the way through. I managed to hook both my coworker and his girlfriend on it too! It was funny b/c he started reading it and then she picked it up when he wasn't home and I was teasing him that he'd have to read fast so she could have it but he said he already bought her her own copy! He'd come in every morning and tell me where he was in the book, it was wonderful! Highly recommend for fantasy lovers. You are the second person this year to mention loving City of Brass (the other is a friend who lives in Singapore who tends to give me recs for books focused on SE Asia/Muslim centered fantasyish things) so I guess I really need to move that one up my (very long and always growing) list.

I’ve heard nothing but glowing things about Fourth Wing. I’ll have to keep it on my list. And yes, City of Brass was outstanding. I finished the trilogy and then read the collection of short stories set in the same world. It’s always wonderful when you find a book that just clicks with your brain and you can’t stop talking about it with friends.

Love this list! I’ve definitely added a few to my TBR. Now I feel like I must read Ariadne, since that’s my cat’s name. 😂 I’d say my favorite read of 2023 was probably Black Sun, by Rebecca Roanhorse. It’s a fantasy based on pre-Columbian/mezzo-American cultures, has some great POV characters from various walks of life, and lots of political and religious intrigue! The third and I believe final book of the trilogy comes out soon, so I need to read the second one. I also really loved Babel by RF Kuang. My least favorite read this year was definitely The Magicians by Lev Grossman. I listened to the audiobook and was hoping right up to the end that the protagonist would undergo any kind of self-reflection or character growth, and he just never did. That, combined with a lot of unnecessary sexism, ableist language and some other objectionable things that didn’t seem to serve any purpose made it a real mess, IMO.
