Roaring Camp Railroad Redwood Forest Steam Train FULL RIDE EXPERIENCE near Santa Cruz Beach 4K HDR #santacruz #steamtrains #trainride #beach #rollercoaster #ambient #trainambience
----
Conductor Kevin took us on an amazing ride up Bear Mountain on a roller coaster like train track, yup, steepest in the World with switchbacks! #travel #vacation
----
Travel over trestles, through towering redwood groves and up a winding narrow-gauge grade to the summit of Bear Mountain as conductors narrate the history of Roaring Camp, the railroad and the forest. #travel #vacation #california #springbreak2023
In the 1880s, narrow-gauge steam locomotives were used to haul giant redwood logs out of the mountains. Roaring Camp’s steam engines date from 1890 and are among the oldest and most authentically preserved narrow-gauge steam engines providing regularly scheduled passenger service in America.
Felton, Calif. - Among geared locomotives, three companies (Shay, Heisler and Climax) are widely credited with dominating the logging and industrial marketplace. Shay locomotives were designed in 1872 particularly for Western U.S. logging operations. Roaring Camp Railroads owns several Shay locomotives, a Heisler, Climax, and five diesel engines. Not all are operational as some are undergoing renovation and extensive refurbishing. On any given day, one might see one or more of the following steam locomotives transporting visitors deep into the heart of the breathtaking Santa Cruz Mountains.
All departures are roundtrip to Bear Mountain, returning to Roaring Camp.

Pretty cool video. Roaring Camp Shay #1 “Dixiana” is another beautiful locomotive. I hope Roaring Camp Shay #7 “Sonora” is back in operation very soon. One of the employees mentioned that they are planning restoring it sometime this spring, but I’m not sure if that’s going to happen.

I rode this more than thirty years ago. Lots of fun being hauled up the steep, winding grade into the Redwoods by a Shay. No cell phones or electronics back then to distract one's attention from the beautiful scenery.

Rode this train years ago before the canopies were installed on the excursion cars. Was a great experience. The engineer was dressed in period clothing (1890’s?) and had original metal goggles to prevent sparks from getting in his eyes. Nothing like hearing that whistle in the woods and the steam in our faces.

There’s still no canopies on most of the cars, i don’t know why that day they had one for every car, usually it’s on rainy days.

Wonder when the Heisler will be working? In a few years, the Climax will be operational. Then we will have the trifecta of geared steam locomotives.
