High Andean Polylepis forests are major contributors to water security from the Andes to the Amazon. Growing as high as 5,000 metres above sea level, they not only help mitigate soil erosion and provide a habitat for wildlife, but also act as a natural “water tower” on a giant scale. The dense vegetation gathers moisture from rising mountain mists and feeds it gradually back into the vast Amazon River basin below. The large-scale reforestation programmes set in motion by 2023 Rolex Awards Laureate Constantino Aucca Chutas have seen the recovery of the vital forests at a time when the water security they provide is more important than ever.
