I also have a 2023 rav4 non hybrid. I changed oil at 1k miles. Glad i did it. Oil was still very clear but in the sun shown lots of super fine bearing material. 3k miles later the next oil change was still clear oil and no sign of grit or anything. Nothing wrong with preventative maintenance.

Nice video showing the procedure!👍 FYI, no need to lube the Oil filter Gasket with oil as Toyota Oil Filters come "Pre Lubed" with a grease from the factory. The reason why newToyota Oil Filters come with that plastic wrap covering the Gasket is to keep that grease intact 😉

Great video but one correction on your technique. After adding the oil start the engine for a couple minutes to circulate the oil and fill up the oil filter. Shut off the engine and check the level. If you’re on jackstands better to take the car to a level spot to do this. Nice job on the video. I’ve been maintaining my own cars for over 50 years.

I have a 2023 RAV4 and I change my own oil. On a different channel they showed how to make a perfect oil funnel for the RAV4! Take a 2 liter pop bottle and cut it in half, wipe it dry and you are done. Take the oil cap off and nestles into the foam sound damper perfectly without rocking! No need to hold it while adding oil!

Good video. I’ll admit I didn’t watch the last 2 minutes or so, but a few things I usually do on a break in change is let it drain for 4 hours or so. This will allow the oil to come out of the passages and you’ll get more. Also if you can’t prefill the filter (like a side mounted one) then make sure you crank it for 5 seconds or so in “clear flood” mode to prime the filter. This is also a good time to inspect for leaks. Also on a break in change, after letting all the oil drain, pour a quart through the engine. This will help flush out any metal at the bottom of the pan that’s just hanging out there…

@jameskarl8908 4 ай бұрын
@@jlweck231978 unfortunately the new Rav 4’s don’t have it. On older cars (2019 and earlier) and some newer ones, you push the gas to the floor and crank the engine. It will turn over but not start. Like I said the new Rav’s DO NOT have this, so you’ll just start the car and it’ll rev real high, which is bad.

Man this is a perfect example of how to properly maintain your car , im not a profesional mechanic but im a DIY person as well and i do a lot of research and learned a lot from @thecarcarenut he's a master toyota/lexus technician (mechanic) and he explains why is so important to do the first oil change at 1k miles and even shows the metal particles in the filter, so people if you guys want your engine to last long skip the dealership free maintenance that comes with the car and do it yourself or go to your trusted mechanic and do your maintenance, just take your car to the dealer for a mayor repair/warranty job that's just my opinion.

Good thinking! Years ago I had bought a VW TYpe 2 Bus and the initial oil change was set at 700 miles. I had the first change done at 612 miles. This VW Type 2 was the first year having the later design 1600 cc engine with an oil filter. The dealer did the change but VW must have known that the oil would need that initial change.The transmission oil was changed at the same time. Oil capacity for the engine with the spin-on oil filter was 3.5 liters (just under 3.5 quarts.) After that oil changes were at 3000 miles and the filter at every 6000 miles.

Hi experienced mechanic here. You have one point missing which is not wrong by the way. Let me tell you what it is. You are trying to use magnet to get shavings from the new engine. Unfrontuntly that is not a good method for a new car because in the pan there are 3-4 magnets that holds the shavings but big chunk of them is in your old oil filter. if you want to see the shavings from the new engine that is the oil filter you want to cut and look inside the filter's papers you will see the chunks of them. thanks for the content

Wow! You really think that…..I am sure you have never rebuilt an engine or even seen the inside of an engine. Yea just do what the manufacturer says so you can buy another car in 3 or 4 years.

Once you start doing your own oil changes, you will be shunned by the dealer. I keep all my receipts and put them in a dedicated folder, plus I record video of the process each time. With full verification, I might get lucky with my dealer, if required. No dated verification, you’re rolling the dice.

Did you notice the original filter number is different from the one you bought? The one that comes with the car is made in Japan. The one you bought is made in Thailand. You could see the difference in materials with a flashlight. I wonder if they sell the Made in Japan to the public.

We switched from the mobil 1 0w-16 to the Penzoil 0w-16 and it ran quietter and we got better gas mileage of 1-1.5 mpg! This is considering using 90 mile round trip commute to and from work mondays to fridays!

Probably not neccesary but I will probably do the same on my new XLE. It definatley gives you peace of mind to see that clean metal free oil at 1000 miles. Do you still have the filter? It would be good to cut it open and see what it caught.

I think there's no doubt that using a magnet on the filter is going to pick up particles the filter can't get below 20microns. I've been wishing I've used it on all my vehicles now, but bit of an annoyance that the new filter housing on the V6 is plastic. Btw, check out the Motor Oil Geek on here, he's a tribologist and shows thru oil analysis on new car of the effect of an early oil change.

HOW do you DISPOSE of the old oil that you drained?

I wonder if they put any additives (like a moly?) in new oil that they want you to break engine in with? Also what steps are you taking to document your service? Make sure you keep impeccable log book with mileage, dates and receipts of all your oil and filter purchases. I also heard something about entering your maintainance info into a carfax type website if you perform it yourself.

For new vehicles you should not change the oil till 2or 3k or bit more as there is zinc in the manufacture oil to let the engines settle. Do not rev the engine or hard braking for 1k to 2k.
@angelicaconiguliaro3179
@angelicaconiguliaro3179 Жыл бұрын
That is not true. Maybe in the past. There is very little too no zinc in certain oil brands these days. Causes catalytic converter to become plugged.

RAV4s have had a oil burning problem in the past. Many folks believe the 10k mile oil change intervals are the cause. The 2.5 engine has softer rings and the viscosity of the oil designed for the car is to promote greater fuel economy. Particles in the oil can clog the oil ring and prevent it from flexing to seal against the engine cylinder. That's my understanding. Some folks are saying it is a scam that the dealers use to foster new car purchases.

I know most people like to change early to make the engine last. I am on the other hand do it every 10000 miles or one year even if its new. I have a 218000 miles 2004 jetta and 165000 miles 2005 4runner, both are being driven by my daughter and son. I've never had a problem with the engine so far. I used AMSOIL synthetic eversince.

@@mitchaser5159with the Clear Flood Crank Mode procedure. It's easy. You depress the gas pedal fully and hold it there then turn key or press start button. That will circulate oil through engine filling filter without turning the engine on. Don't know if all cars have that mode but Toyota and Subaru do. My Forester oil filter is completely upside down so I need to use that procedure after oil changes.

LOL, Pulling the dip stick & open the filler cap for draining the oil (no harm, but) thinking to let the air out/circulate ... 😁 Wanted to do it right, yet too cheap to use a torque wrench... 🙄 The magnetic test, 🤭🤭, best to cut open the old filter, all the particles should be in there.
