Added a 2023 Toyota Tundra Windchill Pearl to the fleet! Watch as we install a Diamondback tonneau cover and take a 2500 mile road trip afterwards. Install took us about an hour! This is just one of many mods we are planning with the Tundra!

Does it lower the rear end a little due to heavyweight of the cover? MPG might be down a little??

I have mine coming in next week along with some Yakima rails. A little nervous about drilling into the cover, but Yakima said that there's markers underneath the cover that will guide in drilling, but nothing is mentioned on Diamondbacks website. Can you take a look underneath and let me know? It should be dots with a "Y" near them.

Cancel that. Haha. Rewatched your video again on my desktop with a bigger monitor and say the markings. Thanks!

Does the tailgate let down automatically or is the seal too tight? Thanks, great vid.

bump- I'd like to know this as well. Also, does the weather strip on bottom come with or did you do that separate? I see a seal that you can buy but looks like it's just extra and not the whole way around.
@JPTrek
@JPTrek Жыл бұрын
You have to play with how much you tighten it down in order to allow the tailgate to still fall automatically. It can definitely be too tight so the tailgate just stays up, but we haven’t seen any issues in terms of seal with it only tight enough to allow it to still drop automatically. The weather stripping came with the kit. There’s an additional weather stripping piece that also came with but we weren’t exactly sure where that was supposed to go or if it was extra

From what I can tell. To remove the cover you need to undo the center clamps fold it up and your done? How heavy is it with all three panels together for removal?
@JPTrek
@JPTrek 8 ай бұрын
You need to open it up all the way then remove the struts then you can unhinge the panels. The center clamps are the last to come off. We have not taken it off all together but the front and rear panels are around 50 lbs each. Their site says 125 lbs total.

New tundra owner here. Loving the look of the Diamondback cover. Off-topic, how do your dogs do stomping around on your back seats. Any long-term worry they’ll trash the back of your new truck? I want this Diamondback but still considering a bed cap so dogs can hang out in the back. A lot of pros and cons to both so I’m confused as hell.
@JPTrek

We always plan to have that dog seat cover in the back whenever we are bringing the dogs. For the most part, they usually take a nap on the road and we have their space cushioned with a dog bed and a couple blankets. Spent about $60 on the dog cover and best investment with the dogs in the new Tundra so far (oh we've had some incidents!). Diamondback has been great so far and can always put stuff on top of it (although that limits the accessibility).

@@JPTrek Appreciate the response! It'll be the 1st time I've had a truck and trying to make it all work with family/dog/gear. Just can't decide between a Smartcap and the Diamondback. I'd prefer the Diamondback but don't want to make an expensive mistake for what we do.

What did you end up going with? I'm in similar position. Cap could be great to use the bed for dogs or just get seat covers and keep them in the cab.

Nice job. So your cover didn't come with bed rail cap shims? I have mine on my 2018, which I bought used and now I'm seeing you should install shims before installing the cover.
@JPTrek
@JPTrek Жыл бұрын
No they did not. The instructions didn’t mention anything about it, but we will definitely look into it now. We recently took the DB off so will see. What do the shims do? We adjusted the rods several times (just omitted from the video lol) for the right fit. Do you need to retighten yours from time to time? Or do the shims save you from doing that? Thanks in advance
@2805Heath
@2805Heath Жыл бұрын
@@JPTrek Gotcha, I just got mine like a week or two ago. I bought a used diamondback in really good shape. So the bed rail cap shims might not be required I believe if they didn’t come with it. Pretty sure it just raises the bed rail cap a little, so when you tighten the clamps down it doesn’t crush your bed rail cap or damage it. And yes I did have to retighten mine once so far. Hasn’t come lose yet lol

@@2805Heath I am curious about this as well. My understanding is that the shims fill some of the voids underneath the cap.

I emailed Diamondback asking if I needed to purchase the shims for my 2024. Their response was that 2022+ Tundras do not need the shims.

It came with a “putty” to close those gaps but did not need weatherstrip. It’s been a year and that putty needs to be replaced bc it melted

Man I am jealous. My 2023 Tundra Crewmax Limited "L" 4x4 does not arrive until the end of this month, in Canada. Great video on the install. I was going to get a cap but am leaning towards the tonneau cover. "So many options." Just the one big question: how easy is it to get the doggy nose prints off of the inside of the windows??? Take care and stay safe from; Petawawa, Ontario.

Thank you!!! The DB is built really well and we were impressed with it. But I guess that’s what you get for the price tag! And we havent wiped those doggy nose prints yet 😂 will let you know when we do tho! Lol

How tall are you. Is it good for short people like 5'8"
@JPTrek
@JPTrek Жыл бұрын
Pat is 6’. No lift on the Tundra right now, but Jill is 5’ and can close front cover easily since the lock is closer to the side of the bed but she needs to step on the back bumper to reach the lock on the back cover. At 5’8” I don’t think you’ll have any issues! Super smooth open and closing too.

Besides the awesome looks, this is not practical for everyday purpose specially if you want to utilize the entire space of the trunk. Imagine having to loosen the bolts and taking the panels apart every time you have to haul something taller and larger in your truck. Gets old real fast

This is a really good point. When we get 6+ feet of wood from home depot or something longer we just have the rear cover open. Not going on the highway or anything, just city roads less than 50mph. Can't see anything from the rear mirror at that point though...

Many of us have deck systems anyway. Many of us don’t use out trucks for work. I don’t haul furniture. I off-road, hunt, and camp. These covers are AWESOME!!! But I stack plywood and 2x4s on top. Also bags of mulch or basically anything and just ratchet strap down.

We haven't had issues getting anything from the front. If you're under 5'5" might have an issue just bcoz the bed is a bit deeper but opening and reaching for the bed has no issue for us.
