These sound great, but I'm disappointed that this is yet another demo of a five string where the B string is used only as a thumb rest.

They do not. They only come in the J shape, but I'm right there with you. I would love one in a P shape!

If I understood correctly, there is no tone control in passive mode, only the pickup balance (neck/bridge)?

Correct. That’s another difference between the Metroexpress & Metroline/Masterbuilt models.
