My wife and I were in the VW Wolfsburg plant on a factory tour a few days after the "VW Gate" thing blew up. We asked our VW guide about it and he stood ramrod straight and did a perfect rendition of Sergeant Schultz saying "I know nothing" and we moved on. It was hilarious, he was a big man and even looked a bit like Sgt Schultz.

South African motoring journalist here. I get what you say about car manufacturers trying to influence the media, but South Africans clearly don't have it as bad as you do. I have both written and read scathing reviews about cars in South African magazines, newspapers and online. Sure, some moto journos do pander to manufacturers but most do not. I recently lambasted Toyota (their ads are on the ifc and obc of our mag) and they didn't batt an eye because I was being truthful and they knew it. Australian media must really suck for you to be so salty about journalistic integrity.

I've been holding on to my 2016 3.0l Amarok in the hopes that the new one would be better.... I might have it for a tad longer than expected. I drove all the competition before buying the VW last time. The VW was far superior in every way in my opinion. I guess I'll just have to drive the new one back to back with the Ranger and then decide (maybe). Thank you for the heads up John.

The last Amarok I drove seemed OK but I remember the gear shifter being quite notcthy almost like an external linkage box. Still better than the spongy shift of every other VW I have driven. Hae a vague memory that like every other VW it had a LHD steering column.

Good evening Mister Innuendo. You are again right on the money. I've worked for 6 years in AutoEuropa, in Portugal, back in the day when they produced their 1st MPV. It happens that it was a joint venture between Ford and VW. We produced the VW Sharan, the SEAT Alhambra (VW Group) and the Ford Galaxy. The car was essentially the same (the Ford even got the 1.9 TDI and the VR6 engines). The absolute only differences were cosmetic. Headlights and tail lights were a bit different and some of the trimmings as well. But nevertheless, the advertisements stated character differences. And you know what? People had real arguments stating that one vehicle was better than the other. Go figure. P.R. didn't have it hard to convince their one public.

As you mentioned MB made this EXACT same mistake with the NP300/X250 rebadge and once they realized their FUp they released the X350 which has a real MB driveline -V6 OM642, 7tronic, Gwag transcase, etc, etc … unfortunately too little- too late … X350 is a great vehicle, and, yes I own one 🤷‍♂️ What will be VW’s X350 move ?

Bejangers, as you said VW has done a Mercedes by taking a mid-ish priced Ute, putting in some flash bits and chrome plastic bobs and upping the price by many tens of thousands! A mates wife had her way and bought a mid-range X-Class. It was 6 months old when she bought it paying NZD$68,000. I told & showed her husband, a dear old mate of mine, that all she was buying was a dolled up Navara. But she wouldn't be told. That was 2.5 years ago and with a big change of career has come the desire for a nice car. A mate is CEO of one of the biggest car dealerships in Tauranga. I gave him pics & numbers on her X-class. He was impressed. She'd looked after it. He offered her NZD$31,000 as a trade. That's $37,000 in 2.5 years. $1,233 a month - in depreciation! Yesssss!

I'm definitely not a fanboy of VW but I'd be interested in having a drive of the petrol turbo version of the Amarok. Sure it's a Ford Ranger with the Mustang 4 cylinder engine but I reckon that might be a decent thing to drive. Now that the price difference between petrol and diesel is stuck at 40-50 cents, the petrol just might be a good seller.

The video was interrupted by an ad for the VW Polo. Which is of course, also a SEAT Ibiza, Skoda Fabia and an Audi A3 wearing different frocks, like the Amarok and Ranger. I'm thinking the suspension may be different, for the different customer base. In the UK, a large number of Rangers will be bought as working vehicles, tradies, or for when some off-road or towing capacity is needed. The VW will need softer suspension, as it will mostly be for transporting a fragile ego.

No you are 100% fair. I love my current Amarok. It has been a good workhorse for me. I know that platform sharing is a thing and has been a thing for ages(commodore/lexen, Camry Apolo, aster/Pulsar, bt50/Ranger DMAX/Rodeo, DMAX/BT50, Navara/Merc) I am very disappointed that they went for the whole platform. I would have been more keen to have the ford body and tech with the previous ZF 8 box and the Audi V6/ TD20l drivetrain. Might hold on to my current Ute to see how it goes… if I do upgrade it will be to the current Audi V6.

Thank you for this educational video which in this day and age should be, but isn't widely acknowledged general knowledge. It is he same in all industries and at least in the tech world there are many who have no issue giving the finger. But in that case it is only due to the integrity of the wider community of reviewers who support each other(eg Nvidia black banning Hardware Unboxed). Surely with the huge number of auto "reviewers" they should be able to have the clout to hold up at least a small effort of integrity.
@andoletube
@andoletube Жыл бұрын
One major difference between tech reviews and car reviews is that it's a lot easier to get your hands on tech. It's a lot cheaper to purchase outright, and you can do it under an alias. Ok, you won't be sent early review samples, but at some stage you will be able to buy the product for testing and review purposes. The amount of money channels like Hardware Unboxed make from giving honest objective reviews on KZbin far outweighs any potential commercial arrangement they could seek from a manufacturer. Plus the tech community would savage them if they were making false claims about a product. Contrast that with the car industry and you'll find it's very hard to get your hands on the car for review. Cars are too expensive to buy to review them, and even if you could, there are long waiting periods so your review would be hopelessly out of date. The only way to get your hands on recently released vehicles for review is to enter an arrangement with the manufacturer, and if you want to get more cars from the same manufacturer in the future, you must make sure you curtail your criticism.

Pretty much the view that I have had with new Amaranger - well put. The Amarok has not been sold in the UK since 2020, we have been waiting for the replacement of both the Ranger and Amarok. I purchased one of the last ones purely as I wanted a v6, its used for towing, I tried a Ranger and it was not for me we only have had the 2 ltr BiTurbo. What has not been mentioned is the shite PSA derived V6 that even LR Jag have stopped using that apparently needs the engine out for a belt change in the new Amaranger, or the loss of arguably the best auto gearbox manufacturers unit that is also no longer used. Long in the tooth the Amarok may have been without some of the technology that I'm not overly bothered about missing but, the overall mechanics were sound. At least the X class came with a Merc V6 not so for the Amarok.

I actually prefer the exterior of the new Amarok and can see it selling well here in South Africa 🇿🇦 as we are a VW loving nation, except the current Amarok enjoys low sales. It reminds me of the Routan. A Chrysler T&C in VW clothing. It was more expensive, lacked the best thing about Chrysler vans, the stow and go seating, and was amazingly more boring and less reliable than the T&C.

When I had a "minor" look at one of the reviews, I said oh.. the Volksford Amaranger. Now in years gone by we had quite a few Rebadges like Toyota Camry/Holden Apollo - Nissan Pular/ Holden Astra - Nissan Patrol/Ford Maverick - Falcon Utility/Nissan Utility but there was one thing different from this CLONE. They didn't even try to hide the fact from what I can remember.

A great video. I watch a few guys on KZbin who do car reviews and who are trying to make a living at it. They need to be given cars to test so they can't afford to be critical in case no other cars appear in the future. You and your subs might have heard of Harry's Garage (which is worth a look) in this context. He was part of the EVO magazine editorship, has a decent fleet of cars and could afford to buy some of what he reviews. Equally, he can afford to be critical if he wants to. I would also add that I think most EVs are being made at a loss so cost cutting for all manufacturers is vital. Interiors are not as well finished, paint isn't as good, attractive looking dashboards are just being replaced by screens,

If it wasn't viable to continue producing the Amarok, they should have just wrapped up the last gen Amarok and called it a day. This will be an embarrassment for VW, commercial suicide even. They believe their only hope is to bang on and on about how different the DNA is, if they say that enough times and pay enough "influencers" to "repeat after me"... they might just sell one or two.

Perhaps interestingly John? 'Two Wheels' magazine, now defunct, was Australia's premiere motorcycle magazine, and I do believe their testing was both useful and critical, by equal measure. Insofar as testing a bike , over a longer period under many different conditions, they revealed many excellent details, which might otherwise have remained unknown to buyers. The big Japanese companies submitted their product to the testers of the magazine, knowing, full well, that all good and bad aspects of the bike would be presented. This would have equally been true for Harley-Davidson, which notably would never permit their products to undergo a full test. This due, of course, to the fact that HD bikes were essentially agricultural engines, placed into a bad frame, which had no brakes or abilities to corner. Blah blah, you get the point. Safe to say, that as the leading magazine in the country, the Japanese manufacturers wished to thrive and sought the publicity. A good deal of emphasis was placed upon the worst aspects of each bike, and where noteworthy, the many good as well. Not certain of the junket options for bike journos of the day, but I do recall, that if they garnered any special treatment, this was fully disclosed. (probably a self-serving attempt to get more nice stuff?) Further, personally, I had experience of riding many different bikes myself, and agreed with the claims of the bike journos. Thus, making trust implicit. It would be nice to see more of it, as unlikely as that has become in the time of lies.

Well John I don't think you should have held back like that. We should know what you really think of the Amaranger. I mean VW says, "The Amarok isn't just tough, it has all you would expect and more from a Volkswagen." All you would expect from a Volkswagen. An engine that dies within a year? How did they achieve that with a Ford engine? Or have they adjusted it to spew more pollution? That's probably the "and more" bit. More seriously, since the Amarok is a Ranger in drag, if you could save on the price by buying the Amarok version would you buy it? Serious question.
