so it’s an electric helicopter that looks kinda like a car but has no wheels so you can’t drive then take off to go over a channel per say. then it’s not a car at all it’s a stupid toy for rich people who love wasting resources with extra steps.

Using the proper, ontological names for an adjustable wrench and a minor displacement may have kept you just this side of a profanity-related demonetisation, so it’s just as well that conversation didn’t get into clearances - the kind that lie on a spectrum that starts at ‘blonde’ and increases in size with visible light absorbency.

For an engineer you certainly did not use that marble between your ears. Batteries don't last for ever, nor does inverters, nor does panels. What is the real $$$ going to add up too.

Hi John, great video and entertaining as usual. DID you take into account the carbon / CO2 etc emissions it took to PRODUCE the equipment you've installed, and include that in your emissions comparisons between grid and solar? Or do you leave this out for a logical reason? Maybe I missed that part in your calc? Down here in South Africa, we can't generally export to the grid and be rewarded for it (only in one province you can, and they charge you for that anyway -- so it ends up not really making too much sense) so part of the benefit of my solar array / batteries / inverter is lost. I pay the equivalent of AUD70.00 per month for my connection before I use any power from the municipality, and pay AUD0.26 per kWh average (the monthly bill doesn't discriminate between peak/mid/low). The only real reason I installed an array is convenience - -when everyone else's power goes out (the system is pretty busted down here now) I stay ON which is great...but it's costed me. One ignores sometimes that these systems also have a limited lifespan, at which point one will need to either upgrade after 10 years plus, or not -- the latter depending on whether technology has advanced so much that these systems will be obsolete by then!! Again, I bought mine because of convenience for when the rest of the grid around me goes down -- but a properly functioning grid providing cheaper energy is the answer in my view...these small solar systems at people's homes and businesses are expensive no matter which way you look at it. Thanks again...Steve

A partnership is a legal relationship of two or more (up to 20) people who together and operate a business. Sponsorship is a form of marketing in which a payment is made by a company for the right to be associated with a project or program. You nailed it John.

A truly excellent video by John Cadogan. I read in one of the many comments that in the USA, doors are automatically locked when the car is in motion. I remember that when I was in Germany in 1971, I was told that I should not not use the inside security button to lock the door from the inside, because in the case of an accident in which I was rendered unconscious, first responders would not be able to open the door from the outside to drag me out of the car.

An item really high on the list of car buyers is reliability and of course, newly released cars don't have a (pardon the pun) track record on that.

I have bought about a dozen cars in my 53 years three have cost me more than $800. My last 3 purchases have totalled $3,800. Five years ago I bought a 2005 Volvo S60 for $500 it came with a full tank and 4 new tyres. I sold it for $300 to the scrap yard last week. It was still running but it had a few panels damaged, needed new tyres and the fuel tank was empty. I replaced it with a $800 2005 Honda it came complete with new tyres and a full tank of juice. I also bought a 2008 Mazda for my 18 year old for $2,500 it also came with 4 new tyres and a full tank of juice and it has the awesome Bose sound system the leather interior is in excellent condition. I service all my own cars and I don’t give a rats what they look like. A car only needs to be mechanically sound enough to get from point A to point B and isn’t allowed to break the speed limit. My mate paid $600:for a service on his Range Rover, $300 for the new wiper blades and $250 for light bulbs, no need to mention the initial outlay. Thats insane. Could have bought two Volvos and had enough left over for a few pints and a feed at the pub.

There are pros and cons to everything Currently evs are expensive to a lot of the general public, Charging infrastructure is a joke, Battery tech needs to be seriously improved so we can reduce the weight of the car and increase the speed we charge it Other than that the rest is just pure ignorance. Hydrocarbons for all its good grace is a finite resource. One day it will run out and all our precious petrol/diesel dinosaurs would occupy nothing but junkyards. The main reason evs haven’t caught on a lot is because it’s expensive. The more evs are there the more charging infrastructure would get better, the more research will go into improving the current tech. It’s a vicious cycle but an eventuality nonetheless

MORE THAN 1 WAY TO SKIN A CAT! I am in WA and in our previous house I installed a 5kW Sunnyboy inverter and 6.2kW of panels... initially it was great 47 cents a kW feed in tariff sadly dropping to 7 cents after the 10 year anniversary. Our original system cost approx $30,000 and reduced by $10k through rebates. In December last year we fitted a 10kW inverter to our new property with 30 X 440 watt panels giving us 13.2kW of panels. Total cost $7,700. Initially our consumption meter to restrict feed in to the grid wasn't fitted & our best generation day was 96kW... most of that going into the grid. In Western Australia there is no feed in tariffs for systems with an inverter above 5kW. Eventually our solar provider fitted the consumption meter which restricts out feed into the grid to 1500 watts max per hour. When purchasing the system we got quoted roughly $11k to fit a Telsa 2 13.5kW battery. Taking into account the cost of the battery & the benefit of doing so we decided not to proceed with a battery. Our 2 monthly power bills average $220 which include the service fee which is roughly $1 a day and also GST. Looking at ways to reduce our out of pocket living expenses I looked at our water bills and was horrified at the cost to maintain our garden. Doing some research we decided to install a bore & after spending approx $10k to install a bore, bore pump and upgrade our retic and the benefits have been massive. This time last year our water usage was 1200 litres a day on average our comparable this year reduced our bill to $38 averaging 300 litres a day. Living in a region without limited days per week for watering we water 8 zones from our bore at 65 litres a minute for approx 3 hours a day every day of the week. The best benefit to our watering is by 6 30 am our solar system provides enough power to run the pump giving us free power and water. We are looking forward to our next water bill which will be a good indicator of how much saving we're getting from our bore; our total bill last January was for an average of 2,000 litres a day resulting in a bill of $500+ for a 2 month billing cycle, we expect a bill of roughly $40 or less. There are more than one way to skin a cat! In time batteries or alternative storage systems will become more affordable until then I can't see any benefit of installing a battery especially if you're still connected to the grid paying a service fee & GST.
