My 2023 year in review: Networked at 3 professional conferences, sent out two dozen focused job applications, 4 email rejections, 4 first round interviews, 3 final round interviews, no offers. After mass layoffs in my field, I put a pause on the job search, and I'm now focused on building my own company.

I was laid off back in January and spent the entire year interviewing for and applying for jobs. I had 69 interviews this year and finally got a job offer last week. It was a very tough and stressful year having to prepare for so many interviews and getting rejection after rejection but I'm happy to have finally got a job offer before years' end.

I was C# developer at a company and our Salesforce guy quit! My boss asked me if I could work on it. Of course I said yes. I didn't even have a login... he had to make me one. I did ok and writing APEX code was pretty much like C#. I was doing my normal web development and Salesforce at same time. Company got bought out and got rid of everybody. I'm working good now but to this day if I see any job posting that mentions Salesforce I just pass it up. I hated it!

Got laid off end of Jan 2023 after 10 years with a corporation. Went on 13 vacations throughout this year with my severance. Currently on my last vacation before my new job starts Jan 16 as HR for the city, its a government job. Scored on my first interview in 10 years. You really have to write the script of your life and not let doubt or scarcity lead you.

2023 was a wild ride. I survived two rounds of layoffs taking the IT department I worked in from 30 people down to 10. The company started hiring some full time workers but mostly contractors. Unfortunately the contractors had vastly different skill sets and over half of them were fired, which prolonged the increased work and burnout experienced by the people left. One of those people who were laid off in the first round told me about a position that was open in which I would be working directly with them again. I interviewed, blew them all away (their words, not mine), and jumped ship from the toxic job I had and moved over to the new position. I'm happy things worked out for me, but feel bad for the people that got cut. Most have found new positions, but not all and I really hope things are okay for them and everything works out in the end.

THANK YOU for bringing up how contractor/freelance work gets punished because of how your resume looks. I can’t tell you how many interviews I’ve had where when I explain my job history they look at me as if I’ve got 2 heads and don’t understand a word I say and then I don’t get the job. It’s SO annoying. I fudge my resume now because the truth wasn’t understandable by the vast majority of people.

If platforms like Reddit are to be believed (and I think they are, but possibly with a grain of salt) 2023 has been a hellacious year for employees; Bad RTO policies, awful interview processes, terrible salary ranges being offered, and of course layoffs, layoffs, layoffs. Employers are trying like hell to claw back the power the pandemic took from them. Workers have got to do their best to resist this attempt. I've started watching your channel because although I currently don't consider myself "at-risk" of my position going anywhere - I stopped trusting Corporations a long time ago, because I've been stabbed in the back over their profit-seeking goals many, many times. 2023 sucked for job searching. I was laid off back in August of 2023. I have no problems getting recruiters calling me, because I have a good resume and I network. What frustrated me was the bad behavior I've experienced. I think the TA folks are severely understaffed. Some things I've experienced are failing an interview but not given feedback on the program I submitted. Also, I've noticed that even if you are asked to do a sw program. ask what is an acceptable programming style. Hiring managers are doing some of the hiring now, too. It s bad. Some just ghost you and it was frustrating. Good lucky to my fellow job hunters!

Altough it would have been nice to find a new job after many interviews this year, I just had enough of all the micromanagement, increased work load and cost cutting. But I have certainly learned a lot about how companies act towards old and new employees, both in good and bad ways.

Laid off in February and applied to suitable positions daily for 9 months, had multiple “good” interviews, but no offers. I turned 50 this year and know that ageism is real. With a young child, I am not ready to be retired, or take a massive pay cut. I had no choice but to explore starting my own brokerage business and contract for the state. Until I build that up, I’m working a minimum wage job a few hours a week, which is all I could find. It doesn’t put a dent in my bills, but does wonders for my mental health.

Got laid off twice this year because of budget restrictions. First was two days before my wedding and the second time a week before christmas. I was so shattered and beaten to the ground thinking I really sucked at my job. But I've gotten better at my self confidence. But I agree jobs are hard to find. Have applied to 300+ jobs and being on STEM OPT doesn't help. Company loyalty is dead for me. I will still be ethical in my work, but I've become averse to office politics and all word vomit from people doing it to keep their jobs. Here's to hoping 2024 would be a turnaround

The low self-esteem is an intentional manipulation tactic to convince you that you aren't worth as much as you really are. If enough people have low self-esteem then it depresses the wage for that labor. There's literal market incentive to gaslight employees into low self-esteem. There are other market factors at play, too, that work in the opposite direction. But, that doesn't mean there isn't an incentive to behave badly towards one's workforce, either.

I think AI is becoming quite prevalent in tech job descriptions. I've noted many ask for the same multiple skillsets, as if they are copy/pasting from everyone else. During the interviews I've had, I've found that many actually use just a few of the skillsets they've listed in their job ad. It's like a game finding out the truth.

Had an interesting discussion on remote work. It was like companies setup their employees to fail, telling them during COVID yes remote work is permanent, helped pay them to move to other places, then pulled the rug. BUT, now instead of laying them off, they just say, you need to get back to the office. So they find new jobs and leave saving the company money in layoff costs, plus since they weren't laid off the position can be filled at a lower cost to the company.

Somehow avoided a layoff. Could still happen. I did start looking last year just to see where I stood. I had the same experience as most people. A few interviews, but they all stalled out at some point. Now when I look at job boards, I see a lot of low-paying opportunities for mid-level positions and a ton of high-paying opportunities that require seemingly impossible-to-obtain experience and knowledge (unicorns). I have been taking some Coursera courses and plan to start a back-end developer boot camp shortly. I work in content and SEO right now. So I am not sure what I am going to do with developer skills, but learning makes it easier to not worry so much about what-ifs. When things do improve, I want to be ready for anything. But looking at 2024, I am sure things will be interesting for the job market once again. Interest rates will drop, which is good for markets. But there there is a presidential election and several ongoing global conflicts, which is bad for markets. Wishing everyone on the best!

With a lot of uncertainty... - giving a raise or negotiating is not so easy; job hop to another role that would offer you the same salary? maybe it was the year of remote work looking back and 2024 is the year of negotiating and job hoping for alternative work/life wants besides salary.

Neither job pays well nor are they ideal, good jobs, but it’s a start. Thank you, some privileged hiring manager told me I had worked too many jobs. Sorry not sorry, it's called not becoming homeless and destitute! If you're an employer that can't understand what survival means and have no empathy, you're definitely not for me! But I totally agree, being in a job for years makes people slack off a lot. A fresh set of eyes is something many companies need.

Don’t remember when was the last ”best year”. It always depends very much on what are you doing and where are you from. Comparing to 2020, 2023 wasn’t too bad.

To your point about AI detection: A recruiter I know told me she can tell right away if a resume is AI generated or driven. And that is with no AI detection tool!

I got a job in 2023, it’s not back breaking, but dangerous and I think I’m underpaid compared to the same position in other states. Sketchy health plan/dental/vision plan. Think turnover is high for this position.

For myself, I would say it was good overall. I moved back to Australia after 10 years from India (I have been an Australian permanent resident since April 2008). I landed a new and decent job in the IT/software industry. I have overall 12.5 years of global experience and have worked in 5 different countries to date, including Australia. But it wasn't easy. I followed two KZbin channels, including this wonderful channel. I gave 5 interviews and I landed a job in just over 2 months after I arrived in Sydney. That's been my personal experience.

2023 was the worst year in job searching as a non tec person. Since 2019 to now it's been a Weimar republic like situation, am sadly either going to get a boring trade job and hate my the rest of my life or move out of the US to Japan to teach English anything away from the Weimar Republic. 2020 - pandemic 2021 - great recession 2022 - great housing and layoff year 2023 - cheat off there employees to make one person work for 5 people, also extremely extremely declined of jobs and layoff in Animations 2024 - ??? As of now am very afraid what's next each year has been worst than the last.

Be careful with Brian's blanket statements. For example, I was an employee and then I went 100% contract for 12 years. I decided to switch back to employee in 2020 and found a good job in 4 months of looking. I worked for 2 years and then went back to cotnract for 1.5 years and back to employee. Switching from contract and employee in my domain is not a problem. All this info is location/sector/domain/company/team specific. Becareful with online career information because it usually is only good as a massive generalization and not very good for your specific job search.

I agree with this sentiment too. Brian is great but he simply cannot give specific industry/domain information, just the generic stuff that should ‘work’ most of the time. I’m finding ‘make sure you write a cover letter that’s unique’ advice is not relevant in my area (IT). With the sheer volume of applications, talent acquisition and recruiters simply don’t have the time to go through additional stuff that probably won’t add much value to the candidates value proposition.

Few years ago I had a software engineering job that was totally remote but didn't like it. Company I'm at now is "hybrid" they want people do 2 days a week in office. I negotiated 2 days per month in office and negotiated my vacation accrual so I was start out on the 5 year PTO plan. It took HR and VP of Tech to get back to me in about an hour and sent me my offer letter with the terms written in it. They said because of my experience they had no problem with those things. :)

Honestly, I think there should be ethical standards enacted and forced on corporate America for false recs being created to only stock pile or if you are being forced as part of the interview process to do “free work” and yet never be hired or compensated because this is not right and there needs to be laws enacted to protect job seekers from being taken advantage of because it’s not fare and is extremely harmful!!

@@dfuk66 I actually had an idea about that. But its too risky for the demographic. I was thinking a retro collector game store or something. But the local populace is a tourist town full of old folk (60+) and getting the bank to lend me the money to start up would be damn near impossible as my credit is meh and I don't really own anything.

White collar jobs are heavily saturated with people with high amount of college degree working in those fields, also have to compete with jobseekers who come from the Philippines and India that will do work for a lot cheaper plus the rise of artificial intelligence witch automate the systems and technology leaving a a massive demand for college degree white collar workers with lower supply available
