My wife and I spent the morning on the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine railway. We were on our way into Yosemite National Park from the south and this is a highly recommended stop. You can buy seats in a restored fancy caboose. The engine is a 1928 narrow gauge Shay built by Lima in Ohio. The drive system uses a bizarre side gear system. It is actually 12 wheel drive to handle steep hillsides carrying heavy loads of logs. Unbelievably interesting. As a special treat they had the engine hooked up to the back where we were riding in the caboose.
