Hey Derek! Thanks for your kind words. I’m truly wishing you the best on your KZbin journey. Also, your tent is AMAZING! What a spot. I’m sure we will be catching up throughout the winter. Stay safe and warm out there. Jay

Thanks Terry! Always great to hear from you, my friend! As much as I would love that, Jay is a megastar. KZbin is his full time job and I’m not sure if he’d be able to afford the time with a small (but mighty) channel when he needs to pay the bills 😬.

Glad I joined (thru Jay). Had a similar problem with smoke in my wood stove - at the house; a down draft and scared my wife. I was across the street and that's the last time I used the stove. Another person commented on the stove turned down and that would reduce the pressure going out so any wind could cause a reversal. Regardless, hope you get it worked out and we'll wait for your next adventure. Very best.
@SubArcticAdventures15 сағат бұрын
Thanks so much Garry! This has always been my thought. It seems when I turn the stove down to last longer, it’s when the draft reverses on me. I’ll have to tuck this in the cap and see if we can’t get this figured out! Cheers! //derek

I’m glad you woke up and saw the smoke it could have been really bad but it all worked out. I’m sure you’ll find the problem and will have many amazing nights at the tent. Looking forward to the next one.

Maybe if you were to raise your chimney. A foot or two higher will make a difference above the peek of the tent. It may need some cables with a stack that long. Nice setup!! Winter wonderland 🍁 very best :)
@alanbierhoff68315 күн бұрын
💯%👍🏻 The top of the chimney has to be above the peak of the roof to achieve constant proper draft.
@SubArcticAdventuresКүн бұрын
100%. It’s on the list of troubleshooting for sure. I’ve had problems with the previous stove too, so I’m leaning towards the piping setup as being the culprit. I plan on starting with the least invasive (and less expensive) options and working my way to a complete change of pipe setup, including changing the angles and height. For sure! Hopefully we can get this fixed so I can prevent others from doing the same mistakes I made, once we figure out what those are. 😅😅
@roamingearth915Күн бұрын
Situations, never problems :) Great plan. Fantastic set-up you have! Tweak every year. Just had a huge wind storm come through on the East Coast, and thankfully, it's not very cold, but I had to pull the fire in case I lost my chimney for whatever reason in the night. I suffer with a dirty opening straight up out of the roof. Always dealing with the hole. I am a good 3 ft above the peak. (I need cables) ! Watch your top knot :) 🍁 Very best

With those stoves if the stoves not burring hot it tends to push the smoke back down the chimney with the draft system in the bottom. With a hot fire going keeps the pipe hot and smoking going up. Use to have one in the cabin for a short time and it did the same got rid of it. It was bad for the smoke coming back in when the fire was simmering low.
@SubArcticAdventuresКүн бұрын
For sure! It’s definitely on the list to monitor. It’s a common thing in the cold for sure. I even have a blow torch to heat the pipes up before lighting a fire on the really cold days if it seems like the draft won’t go the right way!

From the net: Chimney dampers are small levers that open and close to regulate the smoke. If it’s too far open, it can invite cold air into the wood stove. If it’s too far closed, it’ll create a downdraft. This pressure change sends the smoke into the stove, causing it to permeate the room. Minor adjustments go a long way for chimney dampers.
@SubArcticAdventures6 сағат бұрын
I'll have to play around with these. The Osburn is a new to us stove and have only used it a handful of times so far. It has it's own damper and I have one on the pipe. I may take the pipe one out now that I have a stove with its own. Lot's of adjustments to be made while we grow! Thanks for looking some things up for us. It's a true community feel for sure! //derek

That’s a scary feeling being waken by smoke in the middle of the night. Glad you woke up in time. Hopefully you resolve the issue so it don’t happened again. What do you do for entertainment at night when it’s too dark to do work outside effectively? As usual the food looked incredible!!! I went bear hunting a few times out of John Blake’s (guide) camp near Espanola, On. in the late 1980’s. John passed away in March of 2019 I think it was but, he was a heck of a great guy.

Truth be told, I have never been bear hunting. This meat was gifted to me by a good friend. That said, I have a black bear tag and a grizzly bear tag for this season. I’m optimistic, but I really want to do some hunting of my own. Fingers crossed!

She’s an old girl. But you’re right. I’ve got an appointment pending soon with a local mastermind with small engines. I can do a lot, but sometimes the experts need to come in to make sure the baseline is reset. 😅😅
@garryfoote6956 күн бұрын
Have make sure you put your chimney together with male ends towards the stove, so creosote will run down the inside of the pipe into the stove. If you put it together the other way around, creosote will run out at the joints of the pipes and burn and cause a lot of real strong smoke. I have a stove almost the same as yours, produces a lot of creosote when you turn it down for the evening. Been there done that, have fun!
@SubArcticAdventures15 сағат бұрын
Thanks so much Garry. It’s great having people with real experience onboard! I’ve got a couple ideas to try to fix this draft problem. I think the biggest problem is how quick of a turn the pipe takes to go through the wall versus straight up through the roof. We’ll see. Wish me luck! //derek

Hey Brother good to see the Video! I know all about tying mantels with thick cold fingers! ;) Yum I need to come for a BBQ! Wonder if a nest was in your pipe and it dried out and fell into the elbow.
@SubArcticAdventuresКүн бұрын
Yep. Thick-finger-boy problems is a real thing! 😅. The BBQ is ready for when you come out. I know you miss the North brother! 😎. An obstruction is definitely on the list of troubleshooting. I’m gonna start with the most least invasive and work to a total pipe replacement if need be. Hopefully it’s the least invasive, ie: least costly to repair 😅
