When the first Europeans reached this legendary island in the southernmost part of Patagonia, it
was inhabited by several tribes of Indians who built large bonfires to protect themselves from
the bitter cold. It was for this reason that the first Spanish navigators to reach the coast
christened it “Tierra del Fuego” (Land of Fire). It has on a single island different ecosystems that
typify Patagonia: South Atlantic Coast, steppe, Andes surrounded by glaciers, snow, lakes and
forests. As if this were not enough, the island has its own sub-Antarctic forest... unexpected
forests covered with a thick layer of green mosses, and lichens moving with the wind
giving the sensation of an enchanted forest.
