Once I got off the "traditional firm" hamster wheel and started working reasonable hours, I've found it a lot harder to go back and try and grind like the past. Or maybe I'm just getting old.

Your videos are the main reason why I want to major in account. I just have one question, how many years of tax prep experience do you think is needed before starting a tax firm?
@tlungu9628 ай бұрын
i would say at least 3-5 years minimum

That's awesome to hear. Thank you! I went out on my own after about 5 years.

Yeah 4-5 but we’re always learning even 8-10+ years in. Just try and learn as much as you can about accounting and some business knowledge. Which is a non stop learning/adjusting but worth it

First, thanks for sharing. As a new CPA firm owner, I enjoy these. Question - You seem to have a majority (80%) of your tax returns being personal returns 1040’s. Only 27 business returns out of 134 total tax returns. Is this intentional? Are you trying to focus on 1040’s with higher fees? Or has it just worked out this way by chance? Thanks!

Thanks for watching, and great question! It's a lot easier to add 1040 clients than business entity clients but I'm hoping to reverse that trend!

Hi, just wanted to start by saying this journal you've created on youtube sharing your experiences about starting your own accounting firm is so inspiring i guess it must be great for you to track your progress but it serves me with such inspiration so thanks for that :) Im still a second year accounting and finance student, and my goal is to get an accounting qualification as fast as possible upon graduation so that I am qualified to start my own firm. What would you say are some skills I must learn that will be needed when i start my own firm, I want to get a job in the summer during my time off university and i want to know what to specify in terms of what i want experience in. I hear you talk of tax returns, but any other things you would recommend learning?

You gotta master the basics of tax/accounting first. I would also work on sales skills.

Hey logan thanks for the informative video ! I'm going to be majoring in accounting and had a question. When I work in public accounting fur 2-3 years and get my CPA, would I be able to work seasonally for 4 months as a contractor then take time off ? I've read that some accountants work for the Big 4 or other firms using contractors during the busy season. How common is this and is it always busy every year where one can find a 4-5 month contract ? Thanks.

Yes, that would be attractive for firms so they don't have to pay you year-round.

Thanks a lot for sharing such videos. I need your suggestion regarding work opportunities after completing US CPA as I am pursuing it from India - What work opportunities are available after completing it apart from working in some MNC? Please share your views.

I'm sorry I can't give much guidance for those outside of the US.
