We get to test 3 versions of the Honda CRF450RL alongside Aussie legend Daryle Beattie! The 3 versions were; the standard version, a de-restricted version, and a de-restricted version with an FMF exhaust system. All 3 bikes were completely different however there is no doubt about how well the CRF450RL suits a variety of riders and their different capabilities with minimal adjustment.

I wish Honda made a Rally version for off road oriented adventure riding. Give it a 5 gallon tank and a large rear rack. That's my application for the CRF450 - a lightweight off road capable adventure bike that produces enough power to cruise at 80 MPH (125 KPH) for highway riding as needed without running the engine near red line. Motorcycle manufacturers ADV bikes are heavy road bikes with off road styling.

Sadly, the manufacturers don't seem to understand that their dual sport bikes need to have more functionality than their MX racing bikes. Too many of them install lights and a license plate bracket on their MX bike and call it done. A dual sport needs a larger fuel tank, a more comfortable seat designed for sitting, and some kind of luggage system.
@Liberty4Ever
@Liberty4Ever 3 ай бұрын
@@jeffreybobeck9809 - 100% agree with this. Dual sport bikes are not good for street riding. Manufacturers look at them like dirt bikes that can be ridden to the trail, for their young customers who can tolerate a lot of discomfort. Similarly, manufacturers look at their adventure bikes as street bikes that can be marketed to older riders with a lot of discretionary funds who want to pretend they're adventurous, so they sell us heavy street bikes with ADV styling.

So ture. I think market is missing on this one. It will sell like hot cakes. No real dulasport except KTM 690 enduro in europe is a shame. CRF 300L with more punch is way to go, and for honda to put better suspention to the back, not for a 40kg rider

I run a WR250r for my small adv bike and I love the extra power of the CRF450l its a fantastic motor especially after a pipe and vortex. What I don't like is the hard as a cats head seat, short service intervals and lots of vibration especially noticeable on the road runs.

You be better buying the 300 . Put the money in the suspension rather than an ECU or flashing by the time your payments oh can't forget that crappy throttle on that 450 your into the bike on the drop, then 1st payment then uncorking the bike . Forget all that nonsense you can grow with the bike . The cost will be almost 18k for a dirt bike ? Buy a 650L uncork bike and put a professional tune on the bike, which should cost around $500ish, and you will have an animal of a bike . For half the cost . Due to the weight it will be better on the roads as well . Tune probably all 4 gears throttle wheelies all day long . Plus, my service on the bike is better and cheaper . And believe it or not . I'm a Honda fan boy .

I find it interesting everyone was talking about the engine performance which seems to be the elephant in the room for this bike. Noone touched on handling, suspension, vibration, brakes etc which are all part of the riding experience. If Honda want to appeal to the dual sport and adventure rider, then these are very important parts of choosing a new bike.

The suspension is amazing. I dare say it's best in class. Brakes are excellent, better than Magura or Braktec, not as much feel as Brembo (although they don't have the Brembo problems, so overall I'd call it a wash) I run a GET ECU and CRF450X exhaust on mine, and the performance is strong. North of 50hp at the rear wheel

I have a 2020 CRF 450L, it's the engine that needs attention (really just an aftermarket ECU) to bring it in line with the rest of the bike - not the other way around. It's pretty much an enduro-spec competition bike (suspension, frame, weight etc), with an engine/exhaust detuned for road emissions. Just the ECU upgrade alone is a game changer to make it a weapon off-road. I utterly love mine.

I have a 2019 L….12,000 miles with no major issues at all. Only problem I have had is self induced. I overload it for multiple day trips and I go through chain sliders chains and sprockets like crazy. I have had it on the highest passes in Colorado and it has plenty of power to go over these passes weighted down like a pack mule. Been a great bike. Mine is bone stock and have gotten use to the throttle quirkiness which is the worst thing about the bike.

Honda recommends an oil change every 600 miles. I think that’s overkill. When I change it the oil still looks great. I bet you could double that no problem. It’s frequent but easy to change. The air filter is a royal pain in the buttocks. That’s all I do. Been a very reliable bike otherwise.

'A really interesting bike that grows with you' is a funny way of describing a $13.5k bike that NEEDS another $2500 of vortex, FMF and IMS tank to have DECENT range, performance and riding dynamic - opinions of this bike riding well in terms of clutch feel, engine smootheness or usable power range in stock and to be honest even in tweaked form compared to many big bore enduro bikes is complete garbage/spoken by those either incompentent or full of shit. I'm a die hard honda fan, owner of a 'Fixed' CRF450L that I bought once the prior owner had blow all the money on the gear and given up on it ever being a smooth in engine or clutch feel to about any modern enduro or dual sport. I would say for $10K with all the essential fixes implemented I'm satisifed but damn I hate diplomatic nonsense like this. Look, the clutch feel and weight is garbage compared to any Beta, KTM, proper euro enduro and even after improved clutch plates from rekluse and a magura hymec (another $1000) the feel & weight is still much worse than my 2021 Beta 480 - any compent enduro/hard enduro rider will spot this straight away and is degrades the overall riding experience/is noticable. Engine character also leaves ALOT to be desired, my prior Beta 480 was by no means perfect however the engine was butter smooth off idle, smoother and more powerful across the whole RPM range and had both more WOT HP and a a far more usabale range of RPM where the engine was smooth and ridable, I've experienced the same with KTM500's and even smaller euro units like the Beta 350. The CRF450L/RL (same bike) is by no means a bad bike for a specific purpose that differes to a euro/proper enduro bike, but nonsense like saying essentially anything positive about the stock bike, or suggesting that the ride on the CRF450L or RL , even uncorked, is objectively better or even competitve to other big bore enduro bikes, even in the smoothness or stability realm other than chassis stability, is utter nonsense. If your sole objective is for remote/trustworthy adventure riding on a dirtbike with more than 30hp, this bike is th ebest solution in it's weight class, for any other kind of riding it is entirley worse than a KTM 500, Beta 480RR or 390RR or 350RR in every single way including engine smoothness and control. I don't like to say things like this video is complete marketing wank but as an owner of a thoroughly fixed CRF450L that someone silly enough to buy one new would blow +17K on, the bike falls short in ALOT of aspects, some of which are simply not fixable - fuel economy for example, my vortex equipped 450L, even with some slight economical tweaks, struggles to keep economy in the 5-6L/100 range when I can punish my Triumph 1200 on flat track and speeds north of 130kph all down to twin track with similar or better economy. There are KTM 500's out there with better stock fueling, power, economy and at the cost of only minor longevity/maint differences, in reality on an ADV use cycle, with equivelant or better economy and requiring next to nothing to ride better out of the box. for essentially less money when including the fixes not required on a other bikes.

You are right bout one thing. The Beta's that you speak so fondly of are a TRUE adventure bike. Every time you throw a leg over one it will be a legit adventure. The fuel consumption comment is valid but a little extra gas is cheaper than a good quality hiking boot.

I am sure the stock RL handles much better on the street than any Beta and you won’t have permanent hearing damage and a splitting headache if you forget your ear plugs even once. Not everyone wants to ride a straight up dirt bike on the road. If your trying to reverse engineer your RL to be more like a KTM or BETA than sure your already fucked in the head.

I've done 10 000km on my '19, solid bike. It comes from the dealer with a restrictor integrated into the tube after the throttle body, chockes it down to 24hp. Need to replace the tube with non restricted version. Twitchy throttle gets slightly better with kms on it but the engine braking with throttle closed is too strong, vortex is OK, Get sx1 is way better though. Soft rear spring hard fork springs. I get 130-140km to a tank, not exactly riding like a granny either. Stock tyres a great on the bitchumen, rubbish everywhere else. I would buy this bike of you do a lot of road riding, not much vibration, nice to ride. If you're buying a bike to ride mostly offroad, get a ktm/husky IMO. I want to turn mine into a supermoto and get a 300 ktm tpi for bush, best of bothworlds

Idk about the stock bike being ideal for beginners, seems to me like the smoother bottom end from the Vortex/FMF is even more important for beginners than for experienced riders. The stock bike is hard sell over the CRF300 unless you *know* you're going to upgrade it in short order. Otherwise I'd suggest beginners are better off with the 300, not too much money sunk and excellent resale, then when you're ready flip to a fully uncorked 450RL or a Euro bike. Hell, the 300 is so cheap some people just keep it as a spare bike or occasional loan bike for friends/significant others.

Yeah? My 300L has a pretty serious case of **envy** going on right about now. Coming from my 525exc, I chose the 300L for the slacker handling & greater comfort. It has enough grunt … but maybe I get a 450L: put a steering damper, seat, heavier fly weight, and use a taller gear…. I dunno.. I considered some thing of the sort before the 300L … and now I’m reconsidering it again

Probably a good enduro bike and would be closer to a mx bike than a good dual sport imo. Same as a wr450 except its red. On the highway over long distance its just another Torture Rack on wheels. Biggest problem with these bikes is lack of oil capacity and short service and maintenance intervalls. Bolt all the farkles in the world onto it but its just a wound back mx bike with lights and a licence place holder. Realistically i can see this bike being purchased by ppl between 22 and 28 years old. Will be discontinued in 2 or 3 years. Im certain they release these production bikes so they can compete in 450 events like Dakar.

@@cyclonus01 Bit hard for me to recommend a bike for you as your riding genere and your idea of dual sport riding could be way different to mine. I would say for the type of riding in the video a dr650 klr 650 tenere or transalp etc..... would be way better suited. Hondas are great machines but these mx derived registerable bikes are fine if your actually going to ride on single track or off gazetted roads. Take one any further than 20km on the tar at 110km an hour and youll be wishing for something else. I think the purpose of the video was to give the bike a run and a bit of airtime but it probably wasnt what i would call dual sport or adventure riding, more a media ride or trial ride. Darryl did mention they would be used for Cape York and Simpson Desert work which is probably well suited to them. Remember they haul these things to and from the rides on a truck/trailer and the company mechanic/truck driver/camp cook/first aider. changes the oil every other night. If you plan on riding on farm or can get to some trails within 20km of your home than its probably a great option. If you plan on strapping a swag and gear to it and riding 400km days on bitumen and gravel roads id say go a dr650, tenere or transalp.

How can it be an ultimate dual sport/adv if oil changes and valve checks are measured in number of races, and with a support truck 😂… until they make an actual crf450L (without the R), lets keep it real this an enduro.
@Blockbuster2033
@Blockbuster2033 3 ай бұрын
No, this is the big misunderstanding of this bike. If it is ridden in a non-race environment, oil changes can be pushed to 100 hours, that is about 6000km or 4000 miles in normal bike terms. And other motor maintenance is not really needed more than on other bikes either.
@Weltbummler23
@Weltbummler23 3 ай бұрын
@@Blockbuster2033 no i checked the service manual before i posted. There are two maintenance schedules, its the same as the 2023 and 2022 models. one for racing/hard riding and the other is riding on the road. The road riding schedule says oil change ever 600 miles, and valve checks every 1500 miles.
@Blockbuster2033
@Blockbuster2033 3 ай бұрын
@@Weltbummler23 Yes, that's what the manual says. Independant testing and oil sample evaluation on a multitude of bikes however, shows that even on proper hard enduro bikes the oil change interval can be extended to about 60-80 hours depending on the exact use of the bike, as long as it is not actually used for hard enduro riding. Heck, the manual for any Beta bike asks for an oil change every 30 hours in proper hard enduro conditions. That translates to about 1800km or around 1000 miles of street riding. The Honda in comparison has a much lower compression engine with less power and one more piston ring. Changing the oil every 600 miles on the Honda is just wasting good oil. For valve clearance, you're technically supposed to check it every 1500 miles, but you will find - like others - that you wont have to actually adjust them until much beyond 30.000km or 20.000 miles.
@Weltbummler23
@Weltbummler23 3 ай бұрын
@@Blockbuster2033 I hear what you are saying, but engine manufacturers have been increasingly honest and accurate with their oil change intervals lately. Most new cars have 8k - 10k miles oil change intervals, and i dont think people are saying, nah lets stretch this we can do 20k miles between oil changes. We also know that unlike the CRF300L, the CRF450RL motor was taken directly from their 450 mx bike, with small capacity oil pan and designed for short change intervals. With such a small oil pan, the oil doesnt get much time to cool off in the pan so temps are much higher by the time it gets circulated back into the engine. And significantly higher temps mean exponentially faster oil break down. If what you were saying is true, the manufacturers would have updated the manual already. The reason they haven't is because its a liability, and they want to cover their ass... and the reason its a liability is cause of the risk, unlike the risk of longer intervals on the CRF300L for example. If honda dared to increase the maintenance intervals for this bike they'd have a much broader market (just look at how many complaints are in the comments about maintenance intervals). Would be easy money just by editing some text in the manual, but they don't. Complex arguments on why you can push a bike 5x higher than published service intervals is a hard sell for most people.

Mine has done over 12000km. Honda checked the valves at 10,000km, and they were 100% in spec. I make sure to change oil every 1000km (qwick and easy with an eazy change tool - 8 mins), and it's 1.05 litre each time. Not an issue for me.

Spot on mate, pipe is heavy/hot and is essentially a given to be fixed + vortex + a fuel tank of non rediculous size whether your go Nomad or IMS ~11L - $2500 AUD effectively and that's without even discussing the dissapointment of the clutch and the spread and smoothness of power compared to say a KTM 500 or Beta 480 which are both smoother engines throughout the whole range and more powerfull. I too own one specifically for remote/desert trips where I wont trust a KTM or Beta but I'd take either of my other 2 bikes any day for 90% or riding without question.... making me want to sell it as I type this. Frame of reference is important here I guess, if you want a soft trail bike seat this obviously is not, if you are used to an enduro seat like those from beta this is nothing abnormal or differnent and I like it just fine because I'm mostly standing or using the seat edge in corners as designed. There are plenty of issues with the CRF450L/RL but I have both the stock seat and a seat concepts comfort seat and mostly use the sotck seat for dirt riding so wouldn't have them change it as sold.

My 1990 350s will do better all around . Ok, go fast 👏 so what ? If you're on a single track or deer run, you aren't using all that power . Plus, my bike is more comfortable, and I have a 6-speed . It's more geared for the woods . Not bad on the street, but I'm in the woods more than the roads . My bike will do 67 with my gearing still . I don't have to flash the bike or buy an ECU for it just to be able to ride the stupid bike without flame outs . Why did they stop making the DR350S beyond my understanding. For the DRZ400S . It's not that much better . It still has a carb, and now it's water cooled . It's uncomfortable. Lost the 6 speed . Why ? They would have done better by putting fuel injection on the DR350S and stroking the bike, leaving the displacement alone . And put a real good suspension on it and call it a day with that six speed.....
