2024 Duramax COLD START in Freezing Temps (FAIL) GMC Sierra Denali 6.6L Diesel

Welp, the video is self explanatory. I really had high hopes for this thing in the cold, but was let down. Not only did it not start, but it wouldn’t let me stop the “cranking” process so I can further diagnose or let the glow plugs warm up. It just had a mind of its own as you see in the video.
2024 GMC Sierra Denali 2500HD 8ft bed with the 6.6L diesel.
This is the second time I had “service emission system” pop up. See my last video on it where it randomly happened in a heated warehouse. Going to have it towed to GMC and have them deal with it.
My next cold start video, I will make let the glow plugs warm up a while before attempting again. Then, I’ll make one with the block heater plugged in and see if that helps any.
The point of these videos is to simulate various situations one might be in, and how the truck handles it. I love my 2024 Duramax, but it has had its fair shares of little issues. Shoutout to warranty lol!

**UPDATE** The batteries ended up being weak. Jumped it and she started right up. Will do a battery test and the charge them up. Maybe get them warrantied out from GMC or upgrade to the best ones they make in the market. Plug it in when it gets that cold also cycle the glow plugs before trying to crank over as well. Make sure your using anti gel in your diesel as well . Sucks your having issues on a brand new truck but that’s been the trend lately

Yep luckily it does have Antigel! I should have cycled the glow plugs, about to do it now with the jump packs

@@tunerworld also, if your going to try to start it up and haven’t plugged it in, if you have a little space heater you can plug in and maybe slide underneath the oil pan, that’ll help as well with starting up when it’s really cold out, I’m in WNY area so not that far from you so I know cold as well lol

Antigel is a product ment to melt frozen water molecules in Diesel only. A winter formulation diesel fuel supplements is what is needed to be used at every fuel up to prevent this freezing in the first place. Next your batteries don't have full Cold Cranking Amps if state of charge isn't at its peak of 12.5 volts. Third Diesel preheat cycle must be allowed to happen especially when compression isn't the sole reason for ignition in the combustion chamber and glow plugs are you DURAMAX'S AND POWERSTROKE'S GUYS. To prevent this in the future buy a real diesel a Cummins.

Most trucks with push button start you cant cycle the glow plugs like a keyed ignition.

@@joshsmykalski3950 yes you can with push button, just cycle the button without having your foot on the break to start then it will cycle. From there you can then hit the button to shut everything off then hold down the break and start the truck like you normally

How long does it usually take to start on freezing cold mornings? Does it take longer when it hasn't been used for several days?

@@robinprice4877 yes it does. I also had a faulty drivers side battery in this thing which is why I had so many problems (even in summer). Let’s see how she does this winter with good batteries!

put some good x2 power in there from batteries plus. last forever make sure ur grounds are all good n snug clean ass truck

Yep! Only a 5 month old truck. It jumped just fine. Gotta test and charge these, maybe get them warrantied out

My 2020 started right up after sitting all night at -15F. No block heater used, but I was using anti gel in the tank.

Never had this problem. Been running Duramax for couple decades. My 2021 starts right up has 56,000 miles on it. Also plug your block heater in and retry. And stop cranking it your going to damage the starter.

Use your Block heater and in the cold I suggest if you can’t drive long enough to charge the battery the use a battery tender. Batteries don’t like cold weather, period. Amplify the problem with trying to start the truck with low charge battery.

Why do you have dealer plates? Is that actually your truck?

Not a dealer plate. That is a Class “D” truck plate for over 12,000lbs. Its a commercial/business truck

I have a 2021 Chevy 2500HD with the diesel. Same emissions issue. Ended up being the DEF take heater. I also use the block heater and don't have issues with cold start here in PA. Good luck!

Im in quebec we have -30C aways plugged my truck no issue it automaticly starts under -15C if i remember jump start is not the solution. I also had a tesla that was always frozen when i left it outside the problem is not 100% the cars but the fucking cold

My 24 just did the same thing this morning. Not sure what to do next. It will start then idle a few seconds then die. So upset on a 90k truck with 2000 miles!

Same on my 24 except my batteries are full. Diesel gelled. Changed the fuel filter, added diesel 911, plugged in truck, ran a propane torch heater under it and still sitting in my driveway…
