The eco boost is an amazing engine, the lack of transmission gear hunting while cruising up and down hills is unmatched by any V8.
@JROC7347 ай бұрын
What? Not true at all. In fact it's quite the opposite. My 17 Lariat 501A, GEN2 3.5L/10R80, 4X4 with 3.31's gear hunts much more than my 18 XLT 302A, GEN3 5L/10R80, FX4 with 3.73's. When not under a load the EB isn't making near the power that a N/A V8 makes. To get it to maintain speed up hills requires either adding boost or downshifting. The 10R80 has 10 gears to choose from, with 3 overdrive gears. If my EB truck wants to go to 8th to maintain its speed up a hill then I'm fine with that, and it saves on MPG's, and wear, and tear by not adding 10+ PSI's every time an obstacle is in front of it. With that said my 5L will happily cruise up most hills at 1,600 - 2K RPM's without batting an eye, or requiring a 2 gear downshift. It is also easier to maintain speeds while cruising with the 5L. With the EB if I'm not paying attention I'll find myself going slower than I intended, and will always have to add throttle to get back up to speed. The EB truck is one that you really want to use your cruise control with. Both trucks are running the 20" PVD wheels from their respective years, with 275/55-20" tires. Both have the 36 gallon tanks, etc. They're very similar other than one's a 302A truck, and the other's a 501A truck. Both crewcab trucks as well. The 3.73's may help the 5L compared to the 3.31's in the EB, but the EB gets better MPG's, and I feel that turning 250 less RPM's or thereabouts at any given MPH is one reason why it gets better gas mileage.
@lashbera7 ай бұрын
@@JROC734 come on,be honest. No V8s make the low rpm torque of a turbo engine. The 2.7 and 3.5 eco boost engines act like a diesel. I like the Ford 5.0, but they make their power at higher RPMs just like the hemi’s and GM engines but the 5.0 has better durability. Check torque curve specs, you are also comparing trucks that one is made for towing with 3:73s and the other is made to drive like a car with 3:31s. Not a fair comparison.
@JROC7347 ай бұрын
@@lashbera I'm being 100% honest. How vague are we going? Plenty of turbo engines that are dogs down low. The F150's boosted V6's are just designed to get strong/early power, and be broad and linear. They ride a broad torque curve, but fall off early compared to more performance oriented engines. (Especially boosted engines) At the same time there are plenty of stump pulling, N/A V8's. Let's list off some old BB V8's. 428 FE, 455 Pontiac, 460 BBF, 8100 Vortec. These old torque monster engines say, "the hell with 1st gear." But, I'm sure you're referring to your current, boosted truck engines, and current SB V8's used in trucks? As far as feeling like a diesel I highly disagree with that as well. My 3.5L EB feels nothing like my parents 5.9L 24V Cummins or 18 F350 PSD. It just attempts to come on strong, early in the RPM range, and it does, but there is noticeable (but brief) lag as well. My EB has torque that feels more close to my 03 Lightning. My 03 Cobra (which is modded, where my L is stock pulleyed) has low-end power that a stock EB can't touch. You want to feel lowend grunt from a gas engine, go ride in a pulleyed GT500, or Hellcat, or ZR1. Ecoboost is very overrated, but that doesn't mean it's not good. Most good engines are overrated by a certain segment of people. No modern SB, N/A V8 vehicle I've had required a bunch of downshift to hill climb. You could set the C/C with the engine turning 2K RPM in it's final overdrive on either my 18 F150, or my old 02 Camaro SS, or 19 1SS 1LE, and any one of them would happily hill climb anything that wasn't a huge mountain without requiring a downshift. To make my boosted 03 SVT's or 17 F150 EB make power they need boost (like any boosted engine), but especially the 3.5L truck. Nothing wrong with that, but it is what it is. You're asking a lot for a 3.5L V6 (even more for a 2.7L V6) to manage a 5,600 lb brick without boost. When under a low engine load you're not boosting. The last thing I want my 3.5L truck to do is start feeding the engine a bunch of boost at a low engine speed. It's probably not healthy for the engine, and you'd be burning fuel like a mofo. Really the truck isn't going to feed itself a lot of boost at a low, highway cruising RPM's. That's not really good for it, as you're trying to cram a bunch of air and fuel into an engine that the operator isn't trying to put under a heavy load. So downshifting is the best answer for it. Nothing wrong with that, it just is what it is. Making X power with less boost is preferred to making the same power with more boost. EB cruises below 2K RPM in 10th unless you're going really fast, but below 2K RPM it's not making a huge amount of lowend power. Again, it's far from being a diesel. Also to get the 3.55's with the 3.5L EB you have to option for the max tow if I'm not mistaken. (Not 100% sure about that though) I'm guessing for 24 Ford started using 3.73 with some 3.5L setups. I saw a 24 Powerboost truck optioned with 3.73's. Most 3.5L EB truck use 3.31's. My 17 has the tow package and gets 3.31's, but if it had the max tow package then it would have gotten the 3.55's.

@@JROC734 wow, Ive owned 2 eco boost 3.5s, a 5.0 Coyote, I currently own a 6.7 Powerstroke (had 3) and my life is 44 years as a journeyman mechanic who drives and fixes all brands of vehicles but 22 years as a Ford diagnostics tech primarily in a rural truck oriented area, I drive many different trucks daily, the story you have saying an Eco boost is not diesel like blows my mind. I tell people to take different trucks to a hilly highway, set the cruise at 60mph, watch the tach and the speedo as the truck goes up and down hills ( hopefully good sized hills, not little inclines). The eco boost is the only truck you’ll drive where the tach and the speedo don’t change ( Diesel like), every single v8 unlocks the torque converter and then shifts down at least 1 gear and out of the hundreds of trucks Ive tried this with no V8 has proven me wrong unless it has turbos or a supercharger. If your eco boost isn’t diesel like there’s something wrong with it but again the high gearing isn’t in its favour.
@JROC7347 ай бұрын
@@lashbera There have been several generations and configurations of the 3.5L EB, Coyote, and 6.7L PSD. The 3.31 gear is the majority rear gear used in the 3.5L F150 EB. I don't know why we're bashing that gear when most 3.5L F150's use it. I'm having a hard time believing you based on our experiences being so different. There are hills around here that like you said @ 60 MPH with the C/C set will not command a downshift from my 5L truck, or if it does it will only downshift 1 gear, but on my EB truck it forces 8th gear every time. Even on flat, level ground the 5L is more easy going at maintaining speed. It feels less strained at just riding down the highway so to speak. Again the EB truck is best experienced with the C/C set. Why does everyone think that the power an EB puts out is so amazing? People act like boosted, gasoline engines weren't invented before 2010/2011. The 3.5L is a fairly large V6 that in it current forum is running a stout 10.5:1 CR, and around 13-14 PSI's from the factory. The HP it makes is not surprising. It's a 400 BHP engine. That's not overly impressive. IMHO the fact that a non-forged engine, running that much boost, and compression, in a setup made to work with 87 octane, can actually survive is more impressive than the power output it makes. A R35 GTR for example is running a 3.8L (I think?) V6, and it's making north of 600 HP. EB makes strong lowend power (when being boosted) compared to modern, truck, N/A, SB V8's that are made to run reliably on 87 octane. It takes more compression than a N/A LS1, (which necessitated premium fuel back in 1997) and about 14 PSI to better the lowend power of a modern SB. A 6.2L GEN5 SBC is extremely broad, and linear for a N/A SB. Plus your supercharged V8's from any of the big three absolutely beat the pants off the 3.5L EB in terms of powerband and "lowend torque," but I never considered them to feel like diesel engines just because they are petrol engines that make strong lowend power. EB is an engine that when you dtive it you think it feels good. It's good, it's strong, it's linear, it's power comes on early, it's brisk in the applications it went in, it's smooth/refined/quiet. It's not an engine that makes you say, WOW, I can't believe this engine is so strong, and this vehicle is scary fast!" It's an engine made to appease the EPA, and get good MPG's, while also making strong power in a 1/2 ton truck or large SUV or van. It's a stout little engine, but it's not this Hellcat killer that people try and pretend it is. In fact its HP safety limits on a factory engine are pretty low compared to it's V8 competitors.

I have a Platinum. My thoughts below. Pros: Ford's BlueCruise is the most slept-on feature that Ram doesn't have an answer to. It's amazing to be able to drive hands-free on major highways and interstates. The're nothing that compares to the PowerBoost engine in Sport mode except Tesla's launch mode. Instant torque to the wheels that sucks people back into their seats. It's like being strapped to a rocket and is incredibly fun to show off. The PowerBoost will keep the AC and eltronics running while the engine is off if you find yourself parked/iddling for a while. It's a really nice feature to have while waiting in line to pick kids up or chilling in a parking lot waiting for someone. The Platinum's tailgate is powered (up and down) and can be activated from both the cabin and the keyfob. I use this feature all the time and have become attached to it. The Ford tailgate has a built-in step and handrail that makes getting into and out of the bed super easy. Cons: I find the running boards on the Platinum annoying. They're fine when you actually want to get in, but the constant up/down when walking around the truck gets old. First world problems. In addition to lacking a HUD, the Platinum also doesn't have a digital review mirror. The placement of the wireless charging pad for your phone in the center console is stupid. It's a tight fit, angled weirdly, and only holds one phone. Most significantly, I don't trust the electronics in the Platinum. I bought my truck new a year ago and despite having

In my opinion, in the half ton.The ram is superior because it uses coil springs. Its ride and handling is much less like a big bulky truck. Its articulation is better off road, which tends to happen more with half tons. When you go up to larger work trucks, I think that changes everything. But my half ton Ram tows my RV while riding like a dream. My Silverado was much more like driving a stiff hard truck. I've never owned a Ford bigger than the Ranger. So i can't say how the f150 rides, but it's on leafsprings, so I imagine rough.
