I’ve taken delivery of my Giant Defy Advanced Pro 0 2024 only this year and am very impressed ! Have ridden a couple of 125km odd rides now. I’m 53 years old and have been riding with some bunch rides here in Melbourne. I was concerned that being an “endurance” bike that it may lack some outright speed whilst chasing down other riders etc. However after putting my cycling buddies to the torch last weekend on their Giant Propel Dura ace & Trek Edmonda etc you soon realise that it’s all about your fitness levels rather than outright aero etc. Having said that i find it to be very fast and climbing is a dream. The smooth ride is an absolute pleasure. I’ve fitted Continental GP 5000 str 30mm from new . Smooth as silk ! Having switched to Ultegra Di2 for the first time and pairing the shift and power meter units with my wahoo bolt is a revelation. Who would have imagined you could see what cog your in on your cycle computer ! This weekend cannot wait for my 113km Cadel Evans Great ocean peoples ride Geelong Australia with the Challambra hill at 16% gradient. Thinking the 34/34 combination will be a winner here 👌

A comparison between the two bikes would be great. I'm sure there's plenty other folk out there who, like me, still want to go as fast as possible but are older or have terrible flexibility so need to get an endurance geometry. Very much interested in the Defy for seemingly not just making the bike heavier or too relaxed just because it's in endurance category.

I’m 62 years old and own a Giant Defy Advanced 2 which I bought back in 2019. I love the bike, I renewed a few parts on it, rear free hub, bottom crank bearings and the usual brake pads which I did all myself. Its quite easy to work with. The only thing I couldn’t do myself was the bottom head bearing as the cables run through it. The top one was easy. I put it into the Giant shop for that. The 11/34 is great for me as I live in Scotland and there are a lot of hills around my area. I keep meaning to get mudguards for it. It’s coming up to 5 years now since I bought it and it still looks good and in very good condition.

They have the new Defy in stock and it is a fantastic looking bike. Giant paint colours and finish have greatly improved. I like the very classy and unstated designs. Dave you are right about the lower stack on the new defy. As a person who rides with a slammed stem long and low position from racing and also a small or extra small. Many of the current endurance bikes have far too much stack for me. The Defy geometry would be idea for me. I can see a new Defy in the your stable soon Dave.

I purchased this bike last week and had first ride out today. Yes it’s a lot of money, yes it’s overpriced and no I don’t need this level of technology as I cycle mainly for fun and fitness. However, whilst I don’t need it I wanted it and first impressions were fantastic. Really comfortable and smooth, I’m 5’7 and went with the small which is perfect for me. The servo assisted brakes are top notch and give you a lot of confidence. Overall I’m really pleased with the bike and that’s what matters to me. I will wager Dave trades in his TCR and opts for both the speed and comfort which this Defy Pro delivers.

Hi with the small do you get toe strike at all? Also I'm 5ft 7 and when I tried a small TCR my knees were hitting my elbows. Really like the small as it's stiffer and obviously lighter. Obviously the geometry of the defy will differ just wondering if you've had similar issues.

Appreciate thats just my personal opinion but the bike is comfortable to ride, its very nimble, the Di2 is super slick and overall so far I’m still happy I opted for this bike and in the Small. If one reverses the logic & time, one will see the TCR as franken bike → the (rear) geometry of a Propel, with tubes profile of a Defy. Going back to the topic, IMO the Defy w/ Ultegra is highly sensible; geometry, components selection, gearing choice, even the cockpit (unless one can be comfortable being stretched for hours). It’s like a decent GT car that can take us almost everywhere. The simple tech also does make a lot of sense. Coming from MTB, I started with several full suspension bikes and settled on hardtail in the end, as the complexity of the suspension gimmicks just make little sense to me. This Defy should be the one bike one will ever need to have fun & stay healthy (attractive look, all-day comfort position, toyotta-like robustness, no drama). Nice video, Dave! 👍

@l.d.t.6327 Жыл бұрын
Defy vs. TCR: You get a bit more clearance, a bit more wheel base and fully integrated cables. The model David is riding (Defy Advanced pro 0) costs 6399 euro in continental Europe. The TCR advanced pro 0 with SLR1 wheels and Ultegra DI2 costs 5899 euro. Both are expensive, and in short, you're paying 500 euro for having 6mm more tire clearance, a longer wheelbase and hidden cables, compared to the TCR. In cheaper models that price difference is smaller, but it's still there. While last year's models are cheaper (Defy advanced pro 1 with non-hidden cables is 4099 euro for SLR1 wheels and Ultegra DI2), the biggest miss imho is not having a decent spec'd Defy advanced NON pro version with Ultegra (or even 105) DI2 and SLR2 wheels in the range of 3500-4000 euro. Because: why would you want an oversized / stiffer steerer in the pro version for something you won't race (as in: a defy)?

BMC Roadmachine for me anytime. But used in mint condition of course 😎

I'm sure they are incredibly strong, but to me those stays look like they would snap at the mere sight of a common British pothole.

I would always choose the Giant Revolt over the Defy

I was lucky to test the defy '24 SL 0 for a week and compare it to the TCR '23 pro 1. Found the defy to be racy. But still experienced lots of flex, resulting in (imo) significant lower responsiveness compared to the TCR. This give me doubt to wait for the new TCR. What do you think David?

Interesting insight, in what way have you noticed the flex? Can't say I've noticed any flex from the bike, in fact I thought it was pretty stiff to be honest with you. I'm relatively lightweight though which might have an impact

Mainly when starting to accelerate/stand on the pedals I experienced significant more flex/less stifness in pulling the bike or (core?) of the frame then the TCR (85kg here). Obviously there are differences, but I didn't expected this difference. Must say I am not an experienced testrider, but this is one of the reasons that make me doubt to wait for the new TCR in 24. Looking forward to your results and opinion;).
