I could happily race the Defy, it generally feels no slower than my TCR but is smoother and more comfortable and easier to stay in the drops for longer. But this bike is flattered by the top-end kit so keen to test a mid-range model for comparison Unfortunately it seems you can't get the Defy as a frameset for some reason, at least according to one viewer who has tried to buy one
@DANISHKhanahmad

The Defy frameset is available. Top-end frame only. But my question is, will your recommendations change when we have a new TCR with more compliance and a 35 mm tire clearance? A bike which is fast, great for climbing and is comfortable. I'd rather have two specialised bikes - race/climb TCR and gravel 45 mm tires than one which does some of it but not that well. What you think David?

Love the comparison tests you're doing on recently released bikes! The Crux vs. Grail video was very helpful as well. Like that you also tested them with the same wheels/tires which other publications don't do. I wanted to love one of these three as my gen1 Diverge is getting on in age, but the new Defy and Endurance are a bit too racy for my needs and Specialized pricing is absolutely criminal since last few years.

So comfortable and the storage under the bottle Cage is a Game changer, no ugly saddle bags or stuffed jersey pockets any more, for me one of the best Inventions from bike industry since many years.(the storage on the Canyon is much smaller, especially thinner than on the Domane).

I just took receipt of the Canyon Endurace Aero with the DT Swiss deep wheels and the Di2 groupset. Based on this spec I think it was better value than the Giant. Also the adjustable handlebars were good for me as I need a slimmer bar than mast based on the frame size. The look of it also I prefer from a styling point of view. Overall very happy with it - just waiting for some good weather to take it out now!!

The versatility of these models is amazing, but it all really comes down to how and where you ride. For my roads here on Guam, I dropped the tire size down to 30s for daily use on my Defy Adv SL and I'm thinking about racing it next month with my Cadex 50s with 28s. I sold my TCR because this bike easily covers that territory. I think it will keep me satisfied until we see what Giant comes up with to refresh the TCR.

Thanks David as I always appreciate your honest reviews. One comment regarding tire size as i know this is a huge discussion point these days but as all 3 bikes are endurance based who is really running a tire in excess of 32’s? Back in the day it was 25’s and the trend has clearly changed but if it’s ridden on road 32’s seems to be the sweet spot now. Any bigger and it seems to me as if a gravel bike would be a better choice. Again great review. Thanks

I am very happy with my Roubaix comp 2020. I think it depends how your body is holding up as you get older. It suits me having a higher front end after previously having back problems and surgery and being used to XC Racing, Getting low is a bit uncomfortable. It definitely is a fast bike anyway, especially after putting on lighter wheels. I may upgrade to the SL8 soon though, because of the wider tyre clearance and the fact that I can put mudguards on without messing around with clamps etc. As always a great review David. 👍

Nice review and comparison. However when comparing the Ultegra models of the Defy and Endurace, the former is $6500 vs $5500 for the Endurace. The Endurace comes with DT Swiss ERC 1400 wheels, and the Defy the Giant SLR1. Both come with power meters. Isnt't the Endurace better value for the money? Of does it have an inferior quality frame?

Normally I really like the Canyon, but the new model with the tv remote door on the top tube is ridiculous. The old version (I have the CF7) has 2 bolts for a small bag. No integrated cables. Seperate stem/steer. The only thing they had to add is mounting points for fenders and maybe 5mm extra tyre clearance. The Canyon grizl is maybe a better allround bike than the Endurace, but for now it looks like Giant takes the lead.

It always seems to me that many of of us buying an Endurance bike want to be able to dial in comfort levels with a fully adjustable cockpit. The integrated cockpit and only 15mm of spacers on the End-yer-race making it fairly inflexible despite the nice adjustable width handlebar. It would be great to cover more on this point. Are the stems available in different lengths and rises. Can handlebars be changed. How many mm of headset spacers can be fitted. The new Cannondale Super Six Evo seems to have got this right. 0 to 55mm of headset spacers. Independent bar and stem and the conceal stem available in both positive and negative rises with a variety of lengths. All this while maintaining hidden cable routing.

True the TCR is very comfortable for a race bike but it's not as comfortable as the Defy with the same tyres due to the seat post and handlebar. Then there's the difference in geometry which you can't replicate on the TCR. But granted if you want a decently smooth race bike and can live with the geometry the TCR is awesome. It's why I have one!!

I feel like what we considered pros and cons came to rider preference. I've ridden each of these, was a specialized dealer for years. I went with a canyon Endurace Ltd. Did a few changes to get it to 7.2kg , I prefer mechanical being I ride distances and dont care for electronics failure. I also swapped wheels for vision SL 55's. Also going with the Ltd model it eliminated the top tube compartment completely making it a splash lighter. Bike came at 7.8kg so I did well.

Giant ticks two important boxes for me. First, its cockpit geometry, based on an easing of the TCR geometry, is an easy fit for many different rider builds. Second, it achieves its "endurance" ride the old-fashioned way, with no fancy technology. Just slacken the angles, extend the stays, and raise the head tube a little.

what about trekking bikes for long distance travel? I got a road bike with flat bards (and bar ends for comfort) street fighter style, and I prefer flat bars to drop bars. Also I find typical road bikes devoid of enough easy gears. Light trekking bikes exist and they are 1X drivetrain (my fav) while having similar cassettes compared to MTBs, so you can find trekking bikes with 11-46T or 11-51T sprockets. These type of bikes get very little love, yet they can be amazing. The Riverside 920 from Decathlon and the Canyon Roadlite 6 (gorgeous bike) are very good examples of fine trekking bikes. You can fit almost any kind of tyre on those, too, from 35mm slicks to 38mm gravel, etc.

I want the ride position of the Roubaix without the FS or exposed cables. I like the Defy but it’s too low for my back.

Saving money for the defy as my n=1 race and comfort bike. Race bike because I don't want to have a race bike with at least 30mm of spacers and 90mm stem. The defy with some 50mm deep carbon wheels is fire. For the easy days and rainy days, some 36c tires on a 2nd set of wheels. And if I want to go light gravel I can even swap the stem for a shorter and inverted one to get a higher position (still working on that given the hidden cables).
@danaponik5276
@danaponik5276 7 ай бұрын
Since the brake hoses don't run "thru" the stem, you could still swap stems easily at the minor expense of seeing a little bit of exposed hoses when you switch to "gravel" mode. I do like your idea of using the Defy as a race bike, though. I might try mine at an upcoming race next month.

@@danaponik5276 the detail with this Defy is that giant moved to a d-steerer shaped fork. I'm not sure that steerer accepts any stem. I'm going to figure that out with a giant bike store near me.

The top of the line Roubaix with Sram Red or Dura Ace is much higher in price, making the top of the line Canyon more attractive. I would have liked to have seen the latest Domane slr7 compared. It has only one spring rate up front and the iso speed decoupler on the seat post. The storage location is also better. It may be due for an update as well

I'm surprised at the assessment of the Roubaix. I test rode one and found it to have a extremely aggressive, low and long geometry compared to my 2011 Defy. With riser bars but a drop stem and back set seat post it seemed to be made for racers rather than normal riders.

That one piece handlebar/stem combo on the Canyon, what were they thinking - tech/aero focus that creates other issues in pursuit of a little extra speed. Great group test review David, let’s have some secondhand comparison tests, price points and tech on new bikes is getting a bit daft

I really wanted the Canyon, but I couldn't get past the lack of adjustability in the stem. Seems like the more expensive a bike is, the more that you're confined to a small amount of adjustability.

Nice review like others you have done recently. Would have liked some info on angles, trail and wheel base with your view on how that affected handling. For me an Endurance bike is not just comfort but confidence at speed on poor surface in all weathers. Before considering these I am looking at BMR Roadmachine and Look 765 Optimum. Realise you can't test everything but a follow up vid in the shed comparing what else is out there would be interesting.

Hard to not include Trek Domane in this mix. I recently purchased a Trek Domane after a thorough review all of bikes within this review. I am an Engineer, and bike rider/enthusiast...raced for years. Price aside, the Trek is hard to ignore. Value for money is a bit subjective. Giant will always be the lowest price......and considerably lower then Trek and Specialized. Build and Ride Quality is where Trek and Specialized float to the top. Then it is a bit of a personal choice. The Canyon bike is really more of a true Road Race Bike....with some endurance features......you might as well buy their race bike. So for anyone looking at this review.....look hard at the Trek......really well engineered. Ride them all!!!!

If the saddle suits me, if the gears are to my liking, and the frame has the right size it's rather all the same for me which bike i would ride. As i would only use an endurance bike on the road, 32mm clearance is enough. As the canyon has a one piece handlebar I wouldn't buy it without trying it out first, and i don't like that top tube tool compartment. The specialised is a bit too much gravel bike, and I prefer having a special gravel bike rather then switching wheel sets, so the giant defy it is.

Shame not having a Domane for a direct at-the-same-time comparison. One aspect that every bike reviewer is missing though is whether the wider tyre clearance of this latest generation of endurance bikes is gained from more outwards flare in the chain stays so you do not have the clearance to mount a 54 tooth Shimano front chain ring (you also need the front derailleur mount to allow a higher fitting for the wider diameter). Personally I just want a performance road bike with endurance geometry (stack / reach ratio 1.5+) not an all-road or gravel bike so wider tyre clearance increasing frame weight and restricting gear selection is a negative.

The Canyon has a 52/36 chainset, which even I thought was too big for the target consumer. Probably worth checking with the brand direct to ask this very specific question - I try and cover most bases in my reviews but I have to consider length and viewer retention
@thisandthatandotherthings
@thisandthatandotherthings 7 ай бұрын
@@davidarthur that's a fair response David and thank-you for taking the time to comment. Canyon customer service reckon you could fit a 54/40 to an Endurace but the impression I got is that was more from the position that there's nothing to say you cannot. I am wanting someone to size up the spacing - I reckon I could tell from looking at the frame with a 52/36 fitted and I am not a professional bike reviewer like yourself. In the context of finding new content for KZbin that is not the same as all the other reviews it is a perspective you could consider in the future. One additional point when you are thinking about the "target consumer" is why do you think there are CFR, S-Works and Advanced SL 0 versions of these bikes and who is buying them - you might find a few of them being ridden to places higher up the Strava leader boards than you would expect.
