this is a really cool discussion of the great work of Rails to Trails Conservancy. Not boring! If you are excited about riding a bike across the country on dedicated bike lanes, watch this. It is happening. It also highlights the WORK of advocating for this, finding funds, partnering with locals. and all of that. These are real skills of civic leadership and I think RTC is so good at it. I am happy to be a member. I also love how much the Great American Rail Trail is getting people in the tiny towns along the way really excited about the economic potential. It is a very exciting project and reminds us of what unites us as Americans. I am so pleased to learn about all the great people at RTC moving this forward. Well done!

I will never be able to complete this trail due to my age, but I am so excited for future generations to have this opportunity and the joy that something like this brings to your heart.

Om guys. Could we please please look into adding a few things into this infastructure. - charging stations along this route in its entirety (could be solarpanel charged stations for us electric mobility users) probably every 30-40miles. - mini camp sites (for long distance travelers) along the sections that are far/few and in between. - ration stations (the point of this idea is for locals who support this system to maybe leave food/drink rations for travelers of this system. I have been manifesting a ride across the country on my electric scooter to show it could be done and here i stumbled across this system. I just needed a route and this seems to be the best option! I think my ride would bring alot of great attention to this route while being able to record all of the stops/towns/shops along the route to bring more noteriety and hopefully more users to show appreciation of idea. Since i was young, ive always wished for a dedicated cross country trail system that i could utilize, allowing me to exercise my love for just being outdoors. Ill speak for all RESPECTABLE electric mobility users....this is a big deal! I look forward to spear heading bringing this trail system out to light on a national level.

Would be really nice to see the official map updated with amtrak stations in cities and towns along the trail. Flying with anything other than a brompton is kind of a pain. Would much rather take a train to the trail with my bike.

How long does it take to get 1 mile added to this? 5 years and adding 125 or 150 miles. Does not seem like that much. What is the cost for 1 mile?

That is a good question. The trail isn't owned by one entity so costs and time depend on local factors but here's our FAQ about estimated costs: www.railstotrails.org/site/greatamericanrailtrail/content/faqs/#q10
