2024 Has Been The Most Impactful Year For Lands In Commander History

I hope you all enjoy this video. It being nearly 5 times longer than my usual videos and not having the usual naming means it will likely get destroyed by the algorithm. So if you can share this one, I would appreciate it. I spent around 4 hours writing the script and 6 hours editing, then there was all the research finding all the lands and recording the audio. Basically, it was a lot of work for an episode I know won't get a lot of views, but I hope that those of you who do watch it enjoy it and find some lands you didn't know existed.

Heck yeah! Fingers crossed to be able to put more time into it one day. I might be getting a new tablet soon to replace the one I use at work, so I might be able to work on my scripts on it at home, I don't have a PC at home as my reception desk PC is my personal PC. So if that is the case, I might can churn out more videos than just Weds. Though I'd still need to dedicate more time to recording and editing, but still... maybe...

I legit forgot about the Assassin's Creed and that Abstergo Entertainment is really good. It also does a graveyard exile effect after it returns something to your hand. Another colorless option for that.

Thanks! I did want to spend more time on some. Like covering more of the MDFCs and also just going in more on some of the lands and things to do with them... but holy crap this year was just so densely packed that the video was already 30 mins. I too have so many lands I need to get from this year. That Abstergo Entertainment one completely escaped me, I actually almost left it and the other AC land out of the video. But now I need like 10-15 of that one for my decks that are very, very dependent on having my Commander out but also the artifact heavy decks.

1) I feel like ive had this video saved for weeks, even tho it says you've only had it uploaded for 6 days. 2) Imprisoned in the moon cant be sacrificed to a sac outlet because it will make your commander a land, therefore you cannot "sacrifice a creature" to save it. 3) Thank you for this video! I have a tapped out page for all the lands that i find most useful, mostly for me, but it includes alot of lands that are good for fetches or color correcting. So im adding alot for with this video and some new surveil lands, THANKS

1) Huh, that's strange. Do you watch a lot of other Magic content here on YT? I do and I know a lot of channels are doing their 2024 recap type videos, so maybe it just sort of blended in with others that you saw a week or more earlier. 2) That is true, once the IitM is on your Commander, you can't use the creature sac outlet to free them back to the Command Zone, but if you've got your sac outlet ready when they cast the IitM then they do have to have their target announced with it on the Stack and while it is there, that is when you can respond and sac your Commander. This will cause their IitM to fizzle and then you can recast them from the Command Zone. 3) Very happy to help out. It ended up helping myself out as well. I remembered a lot of the lands from this year, like my top picks at the end of the video, but there were a bunch that I had forgotten about. I don't think I ever even saw the Assassin's Creed lands, and now I need a bunch of copies of the Entertainment one.

Another thing I like doing with bounce lands is bouncing a TDFC-land and recasting the spell that transformed into that land. Getting another ETB from Growing Rites of Itlimoc, as well as effectively undoing the bounce.

For sure. The Ojer creatures from the more recent Ixilan set, like Ojer Pakpatiq, Deepest Epoch which is the blue God and one of the less likely to flip back over conditions. A very cool way to bounce them back and recast.

The 6 cards in top 5 at the end was great. The power crept evolving wilds is actually insane to me. No draw back, pure upside compared to them.

That is true, but my Omo deck is primarily built around the creature side of things. It does still like land types but the deck is 85% focused on the creature aspect. I also run Mutavault and it is nice because I can tap the lands that care about other lands and then later animate the Mutavault. For this new land, it will still be nice to use it as the land aspect and then when I need to I can animate as a creature that can attack that turn and also attack already as all creature types, freeing me up to put an Everything counter onto a different creature.

Holy crap, I had no idea about half of these. I am actually not a fan of mdfc lands. I get nervous when I draw them and feel like whichever side I go with, I'll regret it afterwards and need the other side more.

@@JeffCarpenter-c1i I am similar to that with charms and modal cards. If they have a removal aspect to them I want to hang onto them for that as an answer to something, which means I never end up using them for the other parts.

I only got into the game earlier this year, so surveil lands arent really within my budget nor are fetch lands, but I really love the verge lands. I hope the cycle gets completed because I have a full set, and running 3 color that allows me to slot in two, like Esper, vs just one, like Jeskai, actually makes a notable improvement all on its own. These lands simply replace a basic of their default mana generation and thats phenomenal. I think my utility land of the year is far and away Fountainport. Its not prohibitively expensive to buy as a single but simply cracking packs I've managed to get four, and I have it in lists for seven decks. Aminatou actually loves it, as I have a fair few Constellation and Eerie triggers making tokens and want as many instant speed repeatable draw options as possible for Miracle. On the topic of enchantress, I think Valgavoth's Lair could still see play as it does trigger Constellation and Eerie, but likely only in a two color deck. The one copy I own didnt make it into my Esper build but I was happy to put it in Winter, a tapped land sucks but can sacrifice it in numerous ways and it pays off in the graveyard if I mill it much better than a non multi type land.

@@pretty_fly_for_a_jeskai HA! That is all good and fine. I have... way too many decks, but I don't build them all to be as powerful as the others. One of my more recent ones is Rendmaw, Creaking Nest and he is so much fun. I almost never expect to win with it being a Goad deck, but I do from time to time. But I don't care if I lose, it's so fun to just watch all the players go to war with the fliers, it's like a weird twist on a grouphug deck, in which I'm hugging them with attackers to us.

If Abandoned Campground enters at the same time as a shock land and the player is at 15 life and they have the shock enter untapped, will the Campground enter tapped or untapped?

Oh, now that is a really good question. Both of their "enters" things are Replacement Effects for how they will enter. So if you're doing something to cause them to both enter at exactly the same time, that moment that they're replacing is at that same time and so AS they are entering you would need to already be at 13 life, and Replacement Effects sort of 'look forward in time' to see if they should replace an event. So when they Campground looks forward to the event of it entering, it will see you're still at 15 life, because the shock land hasn't yet entered and you lose 2 life for that. So nope, even if you're paying the 2 life and they're entering together, the Campground will not 'see' you at 13 life and it will enter tapped.

If I have a card that is power 2 and use escape tunnel and then later power up the creature would it still be unblockable ....sorry I'm new to the game

@@aaronfisher7513 Ah, good question. The Tunnel will only check for the power when trying to target it for the ability but once the effect has started to apply to the object it will continue to after its power changes.

That Archway doing for 2 mana the same thing that Lithoform Engine does for 2 mana but also what it does for 4 mana is crazy. It also copies any spell, not just permanents like Lithoform Engine. What a powerful land, but at least they gave it a color unlike a lot of these lands that have a colorless identity. I feel like Lazotep Quarry should really have black in the cost as reanimation is very much a black thing and sometimes white. Sacrificing creatures is also a black thing. These lands were very pushed this year.

And they were reprinted again right after that in the Ravnica Clue Edition. They're actually quite beautiful lands. I loved the retro frame shocks from the remaster, got a lot of them, but also those Clue ones are quite nice.

Fun fact: the art for the Alpha printing of Birds of Paradise was supposed to be for Volcanic Island, but the prominence of the bird caused them to make it into it's own card last minute so they didn't have art for Volcanic Island until Beta.

I did always brag that Magic had lasted a long time without having to resort to power creep as a main factor. It's not like power creep was never a part of Magic, Serra Angel got weak at some point, Spirit Monger and Flametongue Kavu got bad at some point, and one day we'll look at these cards from 2023 and 2024 and think about removing them from our decks because they just don't hold up anymore. Fingers crossed that isn't just in the next few years but decades later.
