For the first part, there is actually concrete proof. John Staats has talked about how Elwynn > Westfall > Redridge were completed first and they didnt have the time to give the same TLC to the rest.

Then why the heck does Westfall/Redridge feel so slow and poorly designed? The amount of traveling for dumb delivery missions ends up making it take just as long as the Barrens.

Because they were learning how to design. Good game designers make the first level last so the entry point to the game is made by the most experience.

Played Wow from the start...admittedly I've taken more breaks than time playing ( Stopped at the start of Wrath, came back at the end of Cata...Stopped mid WoD, came back mid Legion, Stopped mid BfA....tried Shadowlands for a week and stopped, and recently resubbed for WW ) but yeah, the early days were certainly different because the internet was different back then. One of the reasons why old school Barrens chat will never be recaptured, the world and internet and people are just different than they were 20 years ago. Shame too, I used to spend tons of time in Barrens even after I outgrew the zone just so I could watch chat. Now it's just buy or rush to get to the end of the game and 90+% of everything else is dead.

I remember World of Warcraft and Everquest very fondly. People give EQ crap but there wouldn't be a WoW game without EQ. Even the devs of WoW admit this as they also played EQ regularly. The original devs anyway. Also, playing in a 72 man raid was bonkers. Something WoW never achieved. But WoW perfected what EQ started. I played WoW more and had more online friends I played with on WoW. Sad that I can't exactly pinpoint the day I lost all those friends. I miss them.

Watched a whole lot of Warcraft videos, this particular one is f****g amazing. The memories this triggered in the first 5 min was…. And then I sat and watched the whole damn thing. Great video man, srs. Omg the barrens chat… I think I still have some screenshot from years ago laughing my ass off just standing afk in the crossroads. And wrath.. it’s just the pinnacle of wow in my personal, subjective opinion. The addition of achievements for a lore/quest driven player like myself was a true gift.

I used to sit directly next to my friend as we played me (horde) and him (alliance). they were organizing a raid on the crossroads but I was watching him chat with his guild and in stormwind general, so I secretly organized a defense of the X roads - I was only like level 20 but I was trying to help heal and stuff. We routed them and chased them all the way to stonetalon pass - my friend was like 45 or 50, he tried to secretly res in the corner and hearth. I found him and waited till he had one second left on his hearth and smacked him with my mace (i hit because he was casting lol) the gaurds mobbed back by then and killed him again. a glorious day

Funny story about Mankrik’s wife- the first time I ever played Classic Barrens, I found her on accident. I might not have even picked up the quest yet. Just saw a random Tauren building/ruin and got nosy. And there she was. Second time through, I couldn’t remember where I’d found her for THE LIFE OF ME.

To me, they really screwed up with the melee hunter. People have been wanting to be like Rexxar for like a decade and instead of getting a dual wielding beast master, we got some crappy 2hander, just me and my 1 pet. I like survival hunter, it's fun, but I want to be able to dual wield, as I can't stand 2hand on a hunter type, and have more than 1 pet. I want beast mastery but melee and dual wield.

I still remember Blizzard saying they weren't releasing player numbers anymore during WoD. Even back then it came off as a lame excuse and the current state of the game only reinforces what I and other thought: they were running damage control and the game was dying. Today the game feels even more depopulated than it did when it launched and I wonder if Blizzard can truly make it last for another two xpacs. If they were smart, they'd introduce an offline mode once it truly is over. Once you're five levels above a zone, dungeon, or raid's cap you can solo it anyway. Playing the "legacy" content I missed out on during a six-year hiatus is the most fun I have in the modern game and I don't seem to be the only one given how many others I see playing the same.

I can remember as ally back in 2007 I was in single AV match that lasted a week (turtle) and I won 132 matches in a row that year. It's amazing how many kills towards my Bloodthirsty title I got from AV alone.

Incorrect piece of information: Thori'dal was not "automatically useless" when WotLK came out. It remained viable for hunters, especially Marksmanship, until after Ulduar. I was a progression raider who ran hunter/pally in Wrath. The only thing that held it back was lack of bonus damage from ammo, or it likely would have continued to see use.

Asserite was big dumb, removing tier sets was bigger dumb, and warfronts were a let down. I loved islands despite the rewards being a joke. They were fun, on a Demon Hunter. But if your class wasnt great at aoe, I could see them sucking ass.

SL average? SL was so bad it was literally a wow killer even WOD didn't do such bad damage as shadowlands did, it was the first time in wow history that masses shifted to other games instead of being loyal wow players which was massive loss on wow's part

I think the original video for that segment was released at the start of Shadowlands, when people were still in the honeymoon phase, and Nathria was the only raid released. At the time, sentiment around Shadowlands was somewhat positive, believe it or not - content is nice, good transmog and mounts, but anima grind is slow, too much campaign timegating and restrictions. After 2-3 months, the first patch content drought started to hit because covid. And when 8.1 finally came out after so long, we got Sanctum of Domination, Korthia, more Torghast grind, the death ball started rolling. Once the lawsuit hit, all hell broke loose and Shadowlands officially sunk to the bottom.

I haven't got I to classic until the anniversary fresh realms. Genuinely some of the most fun I've had in wow. I'm leveling with my partner and she agrees, it's completely shit and we're having so much fun. The feeling of adventure and immersion I get with every quest is intoxicating. Even with how inconvenient and annoying classics systems are, the gameplay just feels meaningful.
