The Land Rover Defender. I’m talking the OG Defender. The L316 off-road capable brute that ran from 1983-2016. Most know it as the Defender 90 or Defender 110, depending on which wheelbase you had. This was the Land Rover that wasn’t the urban crawler. This one carried its heritage straight to the 2000’s with its roots. Well, that all went away when production ceased in 2016 after 33 years in production. 67 years if you consider the Defender was based off the original 1949 models. The new Defender came along, and stylistically, it carried that same look of the original, but with the monocoque chassis, while still very capable off road, is a glorified urban crawler. Officially, the body-on-frame off-roader was dead.
Then, along comes Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chairman of the multinational chemical company Ineos, or, INspec Ethylene Oxide. He decided that he wanted to continue building the original with the tooling from Jaguar Land Rover, but the firm basically told him to pound sand, so, he set off to build his own version of the vehicle, and, called it the Ineos Grenadier. Not to be confused with the Ineos Grenadier cycling team. The name Grenadier came from Ratcliffe’s favorite pub in Belgravia, London, where the vehicle came to fruition. The Grenadier comes in several flavors, depending on what you want in a purpose-built off-roader. You can get the 2-seat Utility Wagon, the Trialmaster and the Fieldmaster, as well as the Quartermaster pickup truck.
Our detailed review today will cover the Fieldmaster station wagon variant. Our example was built in Hambach, France at the old Smartville location, which used to build the Smart cars until the facility was sold to Ineos, and now is the production facility for the Grenadier vehicles. Ours was built in November of 2023.
