incredible to see the Consistency of Sam despite all the races that he does. Back a couple years I had my reserves and didn't really like him. But his astonishing performances force respect and the way he interacts with the public and overall just seem to have so much fun definitely make him a very pleasant athlete to follow. Just hard work and fun! Also special mention to Anthony Costes who dropped his chain but managed to put it back whilst staying on his bike!

I have a pair of those retractable bars... so far, this is my take. Unless they have changed the design from 3-ish + yrs. ago (and it doesn't look like it based on the video), they are dangerous for the average rider (or even experienced). So long as nothing happens out of the ordinary (like unexpected strong gust of cross wind, hit a bump, blowout, or the need to quickly change direction occurs), they are very aero-dynamic. But, anything out of the ordinary or unexpected happens, you could easily lose control. The key reason I think this ingenious design is dangerous is because of the release mechanisms. To change from aero to a regular wider bar, you have to press a lever in a particular way simultaneously on both sides. And, that split sec or two could be the difference between kissing the pavement or successfully avoiding/preventing an accident. The release mechanism depends on 2 mechanical releases to work without a hitch. If one fails for what ever reason, or you do not provide enough pressure in a particular way, or you are not synchronized in your pressure/release, the ability to control the bike in an emergency situation will be a real challenge. That being said, I believe they are a good idea (on paper) but in application the safety issue could become a problem. In short, the learning curve for these bars is not too high but failure remembering how to use them in a split second emergency situation is where ANY learning curve becomes a big problem. Where these retractable bars might be applicable is in a race/TT where there is a more "controlled" environment (using the term "control" loosely). But, daily training with the bars could be a problem and a potential accident waiting to happen based simply on the law of averages. Needless to say, I do not use them although they are a very good and expensive conversation piece of bike history. Perhaps, if the release mechanism was replaced with something better, the concept could become a radical improvement to the aero efficiency of bikes. Until then, I think they are a novelty with potential...or... an advantage for a rider who wishes to tempt the number's game of something going wrong (fast) while riding in the aero position.

If we're talking about Morf-tech, the problem is probably self-limiting. It looks like they are out of business. The web site is gone and they haven't made a social media post in over 2 years.
@joemoya9743
@joemoya9743 9 ай бұрын
@windscreen91 Yep, .. MorfTech. Haven't looked up any information on the product in years. So, the point is moot since it would be difficult to find any to buy. BTW, I don't think they sold that many, and I can't imagine how many may have been returned. But, what I do know is the mechanical parts of the one I own is flakey and unreliable... in fact, the aluminum brake leaver broke simply by pressing on it. They replaced it with a beefier design, but the confidence level damage was done as far I was concerned. I still have the bars on an older UCI legal Cervelo TT bike hanging on my wall. Haven't had the time to replace it since the fitting ranges for these bars are pretty limited... which probably explains why you see them mounted vertically in the video. All that being said, the idea is still sound, but implementing this for practical application is a real challenge that future variations may have found aolutions.

I don’t think he’s the best, but he’s having the best shape right now! He started racing in January, early as the other top Pro’s … My question is: how is he able to peak every weekend? That’s crazy!! I mean 70.30 and t100 are sizing perfect for him, because he is such a powerhouse! Probably he was not economic enough for the Ironman distance.

Sam is definitely the top dog right now, mainly with his high level of constancy and ability to finish a race. The rankings will all depend on the performance at specific races though. Can we talk about the rubbish performance by the IM broadcast? Literally dont know what’s going on during the race!!! Showing Lagerstrom during the swim, even though he wasn’t in the race, and commentating on where he’s at in the pack!? Then the run debacle with Ben! Geeeze 😅

Even at six bike lengths (I think that's the legal no draft zone) there is a small advantage from drafting...
@thedailytri
@thedailytri 9 ай бұрын
Its actually a fairly significant advantage in Ironman racing. Especially when you add the watt savings over the entire 2 hour bike ride. Could be a couple minute savings. Also, it helps a lot mentally to sit behind and follow someone.
@99cya
@99cya 9 ай бұрын
@@thedailytri i see but isnt it forbidden to draft? If the advantages are so impactful and well understood, why saying drafting is not allowed? Puzzling.
@thedailytri
@thedailytri 9 ай бұрын
@@99cya It is forbidden if you are closer than 12 meters (they have race ranger to determine the distance). Its a good point though you make. Basically it is "non-draft" in comparison to draft allowed races where you can sit inches from a wheel. If you go more than 12 meters - It becomes hard to put on a broadcast with people so spread out.

It's a no-draft race, 12 m minimum distance, yet, everyone rides in groups. I guess 12 m isn't long enough and it should be 20 m like PTO. Oh wait, they all ride in groups there, too. Hmmm, when I race time trials, no one drafts anyone, riders don't create groups. What's up with triathletes? It must be due to the length of the race (much longer than my 20 km and 40 km TTs) and that everyone is riding below threshold.

Sam is young enough to be able to bike and run to make up his swim deficit. Let's hope he does not become another LS. Also, out biking Jan Frodeno by ten minutes? Really?

LS just had his fastest swim at Oceanside. Both race the same way Sam just did here. Don't know what you mean by not becoming another LS? Out bike Jan by ten is suspicious for sure.
@gtkona1608
@gtkona1608 9 ай бұрын
@@drewblake854 But LS is still not a front pack swimmer after nearly a decade and he now says he is too slow to compete at T100. So Sam should not become a triathlete who 'could have been' if only he had been front pack swimmer. And ten minutes faster than the GOAT!
