The Kia Picanto is the cheapest car Kia make and one of the cheapest new cars on sale today but can it really be any good ? The Picanto is 20 years ols this year and it's a hugely important car for Kia. What is lacks on power it makes up for in character and equipment !

I had this car’s sister - a 1.2 Hyundai i10. It had heated seats and steering wheel and I got low 50 mpgs all day long without trying. Had it for 5 years when my kids were small. I had zero expectations of it but it was comfortable, quiet and most importantly NOTHING went wrong in the 5 years I had it. It was such a good car.

Small, simple and back to basics. Can’t fault Kia for that. Ford made a big mistake ditching the fiesta, because I think there’s still a market for small city cars that are cheap to run and just have the essentials you need. This is ideal for nipping to town or busy built up areas. Small wheels and a nice simple non turbo petrol engine. Other manufacturers are missing a trick here I think.

The new Dacia Spring A segment city hatch with a bigger boot is cheaper at less than £15k. After sitting in traffic listening to my friend complain about her manual Alfa I can't help but think that the more fit for purpose Dacia beats this hands down. Most city car drivers wouldn't appreciate the engine sound either, although I personally enjoyed my last 3 cylinder cars engine note. What about emissions zones? So for many people there is very good reason to go EV and this Kia would be a bit of a pain.

Actually BEV would be perfect for this car. Think about it BEV's are more efficient in the city, you're unlikely to use this car outside the city often and will likely be a second car and would be much cheaper to run. Just a shame most car manufacturers don't want to make cheap BEV's.

When I got married, 17 years ago, we bought a Kia Pride, this car's predecessor... It was used, around 3 or 4 years old at the time and it was what we could afford at that time... we drove that little car all over Sweden, where we lived at the time and I have such great memories of it... just a solid little car that worked with no frills.

Brilliant little car the car we should all be using on our overcrowded and pot holed roads. The price is good in an age of gross overpriced vehicles. Kia and Hyundai are now the only people offering a decent small car although I should add the Aygo and the entry Clio. No wonder Ford and Vauxhall market share continues to plummet. Bought one of these new in 2011 just after the new face-lift. Paid around £8600 for it. Basic model but was used as a second car for small journeys into town by my wife. I loved it. Nippy little 3 cylinder engine , no road tax and cheep to insure plus good MPG. We had it 6 years with no problems at all. You could always get it parked due to the size and fun to drive. Back to basics. As a second car or town car or even a first car I would highly recommend them.

Perfectly proves the point that, if you just want straightforward transport to get you from A-B, you don’t have to spend ridiculous amounts of money. Credit to you for featuring this and I’m sure Kia will shift loads of them to the motoring masses. 8yrs ago my daughter was fed up with her older cars always having problems, so I suggested she looked at a new Kia Rio as it came with a 7yr warranty so, if she had it serviced regularly, she wouldn’t have any worries for 7yrs basically. It cost her a similar amount and here we are 8yrs later and 100k miles and it’s still running perfectly. Apart from servicing costs it hasn’t needed anything spent on it so what’s not to like? This is motoring for the masses and until they produce an EV for a similar amount this is what people will buy.

One of the many great things about most Hyundai and Kia cars is that their fuel consumption claims are very honest. I drove the Hyundai i20 and it would often do 50-55 mpg. I am currently driving a Kia XCeed (great car by the way) 1.5T-GDI which the manufacturers claim will do 44 MPG. I usually get 47-48 mpg, and have seen it go as high as 58 mpg on one trip. Add to that great quality and a very nice driving experience and It’s no wonder that they rank No.3 in the world today. I’m sold!

I’m about to take delivery of my 4th brand new Picanto, 1st one was a ‘62’ plate in 2013. It was the ‘3’ version in flat white and manual. 2nd was a ‘4’ model ‘65’ plate in metallic red and automatic. 3rd was the ‘18’ plate GT Line S, manual in flat powder blue. A brief visit to a Stonic hybrid in ‘71’ plate, and now back to the Picanto, this time another GT Line S in the new green outfit with the automated 5 speed DCT transmission. I am male but I don’t care much about speed and power, but the level of equipment is more important. I do like my luxury as a former Jaguar XJ6 (I owned two of them) owner can testify. As mentioned in the video even the ’2’ trim being tested had lots of toys as you put it, the GT Line S has more toys and luxury than was ever in my old Jags!! These are brilliant little cars, great for all ages of drivers and both genders. I hope Kia continue with this car or if they discontinued it, I hope they replace it with the next gen city car type, whatever its new name would be. 3 cheers for the Picanto 🙂

Love these little beasties. Puts the driving experience back into driving and the level of kit is surprising for the cost. Ideal for zipping around town or the twisty windy country roads, and ideal for driving around the old towns in Italy and the Amalfi where a tiny car is an advantage. Park the thing anywhere and if push comes to shove can take 4 adult passengers. Back seats folded and two large suit cases are easily accommodated. More economical than an EV and probably in true environmental impact is less polluting than a Pure EV , because most EV are charged on coal or gas fired power and the true cost and Environmental impact of Battery manufacture take into account. lighter so less damage to roads etc.

I had a 2014 Picanto that came after a Jaguar XF Portfolio with a twin turbo V6 diesel and a lot of kit. As nice as the Jaguar was I loved the Picanto for it's lightness and fun drive. The ride comfort was amazingly sorted and the gearchange was like knife though butter. It even felt capable on the motorway. It's remarkable that this class of car isn't common now but suggests to me that legacy marques are compromised by the transition to electric cars and are losing money on each EV they build so they have axed low profit small cars. Thanks for the video. 👍🏼

7 year warranty so cost of parts isn't much of an issue. Servicing cost at UK main dealers is a bit pricey like most dealerships are but 3 or 4 year plans make it cheaper, besides you're free to get it serviced and MOTd anywhere you like without invalidating the warranty. I've owed my Picanto for 8 years and it's had no work done on it other than replenishables.

I love the fact that it has given you a massive smile on your face. The little 3-cyl engine giving a wonderful noise, the fact it does not creak and rattle meaning it is well made, and puts back the real FUN of driving at low speeds. Yes, it does not have the space for four up and long distance, but as a day to day car for commutes, the fact your big smile on you face, makes it for me, a bit of a winner. Mind you I have had several superminis over the years and it is that low(er) speed fun when you are driving to work, or a quick weekend away makes it so much more fun! Back to basics in a very well made package. Almost a Mini Cooper (original one) for the 21st century. I may look at one as a second car to my holdall.

Bought my daughter one of these 18 months ago as her first car, higher spec than this, but otherwise very similar. This really is a great little car, a bit more poke would be nice, but we’ve been to London twice to get some experience in more challenging conditions absolutely no problems. Will happily buzz along at 70/80, super easy to drive, all the toys a teen needs, comfortable and quiet enough and handles really rather well, it has character and isn’t dull/unresponsive. A relative bargain in a world of stupidly expensive cars, would throughly recommend

Nice review, I like the new Picanto. This is what we need more of, good, small, affordable and efficient cars. Very few people really need anything bigger, heavier, more complicated or faster than this. I was in the market for a new small car last year, and did look at the Picanto. I really liked it, but couldn't get away with the seat comfort, anything over 30 minutes and I was uncomfortable. So I went with a new Toyota Aygo X, and I've been round Europe in that without any issues, comfort or otherwise. Small cars are great, and fun!

Good review Pete, should keep the naysayers quiet for a bit “you are reviewing too many unobtainium cars” etc….as for the Kia, obviously when a lot of manufacturers have dumped smaller models, they still feel there is a market, so all kudos to them. Also, I always read that the big touch screens in most modern (and more expensive cars) are all about cost saving, so the lack of switches and knobs, so how come it’s not the case here!!

Propper motoring Journalism Pete with an ICE car, i bet this video does better than many preceding it even thought it is a KIA which by the way looks like a nice little car.

Id say the Niro is the best size compromise; a proper family car, plenty of boot capacity, fairly small and easy to park. If you dont need that space, the Sttonic 3 cylinder turbo DCT is a hoot

My Sister passed her test earlier this year and just under a month bought her first car and bought a "66" reg 1.2 sport Auto what a lovley little car 🚗 👍 Only thing I can't get with Kia is how the performance has gone backwards 0-60 times are slower on the newer model must be the only car to do that, but not fast in the first place so no big deal 😂😂😂

We are a 2 car family with 2 grown up boys, well young men 24 and 25 and both 6 foot. When we all go out we go in the main car, a 2017 Kia Optima GT Line S, one that I would l like to replace but sadly Kia don't do them anymore. Our other car is a 2011 Kia Picanto 1.2 Automatic and I actually quite like driving it. My dad bought it new but when he got to the age when he shouldn't be driving we bought it off him and apart from a spring cracking a few years ago we haven't really had any problems with it. I had three other Kias before the Optima and they have been very reliable and both the spring problem with the Picanto and any problems I have had with the Optima have all been covered under their great warranty.

I run a Toyota Aygo X as a daily/commuter. It's great fun to drive being so small and light, and comes with nigh on all the toys as standard! I don't drive it with economy in mind, nor strive for the best MPG yet i still average 55-57MPG over the last 7K miles.

One comment, Pete seven years warranty and all the new safety tec. The satellite navigation is great and the speed limiter is ok. I've ever got used to the Bings & Bongs after a while. 😂 Great presentation mate.

I've got three kids. Two have I 10s and one has a Picanto. I'm 6'3", and find the I 10s really uncomfortable to drive, where as the Picanto is really comfy. Its just the seat and steering wheel seem so much better situated for comfort. I don't know why. I would expect them to be identical.

Why not make a cheap E.V. Version. But with warranty can't be beaten, apart from the Mg3. Give that a try, brilliant.

Too small for me but I did get 49.9 at one point well into my drive from London to Glasgow a couple of days ago in my Qashqai 1.3L petrol, so small is not always better. It averaged 48.5 mpg for the journey there and back. I was impressed as the Diesel Evoque I did the exact same journey in exactly a month ago only did 52.5 mpg as a comparison.

My 2019 Leon has a key and NO start button or key less entry so harder to steal it. We had a Picanto as a loan car. It was cheap but ideal city run around and I can't see why slightly bigger hatch backs cost so much. Oh yes we are being ripped off.

Another fun review Pete! Those little turbo-free three pot engines with little torque are a joy whilst trying to get the most out of them! Have one on my wife’s Polo. Not to mention consumption which really can’t go wrong even when you’re pushing on. Another advantage of not having a turbo. Cheers, Tom

Small cars like this should be exempt from the upcoming ICE engine ban. Lots of people have nowhere to charge, cars like this will keep people moving. The suzuki ignis is said to be a fun car to drive too, and had a bigger 1.2 engine.

Let’s hope that the spec in this car filters through to the rest of the range. A key you put in and twist, proper handbrake, cogs you stir yourself, all excellent. The digital dials, infotainment screen, driving “aids”, all need to be gone for the facelift though. A great car, probably the best you’ve reviewed for a very long time. Interesting fact , the Picanto has been around for as long as the Ford Cortina lived .
