If someone tries hard, maybe they will still be able to buy the 2022 FJ Cruiser Final Edition. I am a happy owner of one. When I saw the first photos of the new Landcruiser two months after buying the FJ, I was concerned whether I was in too much of a hurry. But after your video in which you very nicely discussed all the pros and cons of both models, I am happy with my choice. I replaced the bad bulbs in the FJ with LED ones and it's quite good now. The main reason I chose FJ was its simplicity and legendary failure-free operation. I wish all owners of new LandCruisers that they will be as trouble-free as the FJ. But looking at the direction in which today's automotive industry is heading, I have great concerns about this and I chose older designs, perhaps more fuel-consuming, but giving me a greater likelihood that I will not be a regular visitor to repair shops.

Congrats Hayden! To me, the criteria of a great 4x4 is mods availability and mechanical reliability. Besides the extra space and an arguable engine "upgrade", almost all "advanced technology/features" are available to the FJs after mods. Although I believe many mods are also coming for the 2024 LC, there are many reasons why the 2024 LC's reliability is questionable. FJ is a clear winner here and Yes I am biased as a proud FJ owner. P.S.: Forgot to add that precise and linear control is needed in rock crawling. That hybrid set up will surely mess up the mechanical feedback and "connection" with the driver.

Ditto. I’ve done quite a bit of modding my ‘07 FJ and regularly go beat it up in the California mountains and deserts and, with the exception of breaking IFS axels, this thing is rock solid. The utilitarian design (and age) lets me beat it up without stressing over the paint job or denting it. It smells like an old car, but at 200k miles, she has quite a bit of life left in her. It’s hard to picture the new LC fully modded, but I’m sure it will be nice, but I would still stress over getting Desert Pin-striping or mud on the interior. And time will tell if it’s built as solid as the legendary FJ.

I had an FJ for 6 years. Was fully stacked with almost every off-road mod there is. Went with it instead of jeep because of its shorter wheelbase comparing to Jeep 4 door and larger space comparing to Jeep 2 door. Also has a good towing capacity. I loved it overall. The HP is a bit insufficient after all the mods. Turning radius is dangerously too wide. There were times I couldn’t turn around on a mountain. The interior space is too small for sleeping in. My Land Rover Disco with similar or shorter wheelbase base can fit a piano and 2x4 lumber in it. Lastly, the independent suspension… my god. It’s good for dessert driving, as I did in SoCal. Really stable on road and offroad. But for rock crawling it’s just awkward. Yes it may be able to do a jeep can, but now you are sitting in it 45 degree slanted, trying to stay physically upright on your seat. It’s just horrifying at times with that cabin tilt. I frankly love the design my Land Rover discovery most for all the off road vehicles I owned. The largest cabin, off center differential, seating position… but the mechanical quality and electronic is garbage. Then now finally Toyota is making another land cruiser. Hybrid… fuck. How do you expect people to fix it off grid in some mountains? Hybrid for an offroad car. Really? I don’t know. Maybe it’s not an issue.

Love this channel! It really seems like the FJ got the best mix of both affordable, retro Land Cruiser styling, and of course the absolute bulletproof V6 from the 4Runner that Toyota perfected. I’ll take Land Cruiser reliability & better offroad features all for half the price, any day of the week. Love the look of the new Land Cruiser, but people can pry my FJ keys from my cold dead hands, haha. Definitely keeping the FJ forever, it’s my rig and always will be ;)

Thanks for that info Hayden. More BS from Toyota using a prehistoric Nickle Metal Hydride Battery in the new Cruiser! Haven't they ever heard of Lithium batteries? Or is that because they catch on fire perhaps? I'm seeing the hybrids as a bit of a con job...2 operating systems means more complex, more expensive maintenance systems... to make some people feel good. How much are the savings by including electric to the turbo 4 ?

Good comparison! I had my first 2007 FJ cruiser in 2006 (stolen in 2009) and had a 2009 until 2019. Sold it because it was starting to be high mileage and was quite hard on gas. I loved my FJs however and both saw a lot of highway, and offroad time! Great comfortable vehicle that even stock was keeping up with modified jeeps offroad! I since drive a RDX which i really like and uses quite a bit less gas, but although it is a great driver, limited towing capacity and very good in snow, it has no offroad capacity. I just put a deposit to be on a waiting list for the new landcruiser; Good towing capacity, good looks, good power and fuel economy should be better with the hybrid….

I think the FJ is better for offroading. Because it is so cheap I don't mind breaking something. And they are fairly easy to work on. Buying a new LandCruiser and then modding it to take it off road seems like a way too expensive fix. I do like how analog the FJ is even changing 2H, 4H, and 4L is a breeze. Unlike these newer Toyotas which are only a button but they seem finicky. But for me the FJ is a third car. If I was only going to have one the LandCruiser probably drives better so I would probably pick it.

Great video! Isn't supercharged better option than the Turbo? Also why 4 CYL Turbo Hybrid?! Ummmm... look like a prius.Well LC is def roomier specially the back seats and is user friendly. I have update this beast and love it very much, anytime anywhere I go people stare on my FJC and asking if its for sale. Overall I like the LC and am very happy finally Toyota came up with something new to compare with new Defender and Jeep. At the end I will stick with my FJ since it has much less electronics.
