I would be ok with 8Gb if it was around $400 but it's not okay at those prices. I just got a Beelink SER7 with amd 7840HS on par with the M2 and 32Gb/1Tb SSD for the price of the base 8Gb/256Gb mac mini. I installed Ubuntu in 5 minutes and it's better than any mac can be.

My guess is we will see the M4 Pro & Max devices launch this fall which will include upgraded Mac mini & Macbook Pros and quite possibly upgraded iMacs. The Spring 2025 event/launch will give us new M4 Ultra Mac Studios & Mac Pros and quite possibly the [highly] speculated M4 Extreme SoC for the Mac Pro. I think we might also get the much anticipated iMac Pro w/a choice of an M4 Pro or Max.

Still an M1 user, this may be the push I need to finally upgrade. I’m still astonished at how powerful the M series of chipsets is when it comes to music production. I can never go back to x86 again. Hopefully, with the price of fast storage coming down, let’s hope that Apple finally gets on board with giving us truly large on board storage without having to add it. Imagine the new Mac mini pro redesign is that they add super MagSafe magnet on it. Alone you can sit your iPhone on top to charge. Or with new XDR displays, attach your Mac mini to the new XDR and you get a iMac Pro hybrid.

The M3 used a low yield 3 nm process from TSMC. The M4 uses the higher yield 3 nm process from TSMC. I doubt if TSMC will carry on supporting this low yield process and so the production of M3 processors will cease.

Make sure to get a big enough disk of you get an Mx Mac as it’s not expandable. Outlook for example keeps a copy of your mails locally and if you have a lot of mails with attachments you can fill the base one up in no time.

Unless you add four 2TB solid state drives and mount then as a striped array. You can then cross link any directory having problems with space.

I'm a bit new to Macs, so it maybe a silly question, but why Macs does not have DisplayPorts? I want to get Mac Mini Pro once it's released, but I would like to connect it to my Alienware AW3423DW ultrawide monitor. Since it supports only HDMI 2.0, I'm curious if Mac mini will be able to handle the 3440 x 1440 resolution with 175Hz. I would appreciate insight.

I just got a M2 mini on the used market and targeted the 16GB version as well. It was just not doable, the price discrepancy used between used 16G and basemodel 8G is even bigger on the used market than buying brand new. (Cheapest 16G I could get was E 700,-, while I settled for a base 8/256 model for E 420,-) A premium of E 280,- for 8GB more on a E 420,- price is just not justifiable for me.

I have a 16gb M1 and that’s not even enough! My system monitoring software tells me I’m always overloading and shifting to virtual memory. I have to have my computer handle running Teams, Outlook, Safari, and either Photoshop or InDesign running at the same time. The chip handles it but I need more RAM

Nice! Seems like the only things that has changed is the price went up by $100 at the lowest level and slightly more RAM for the Pro version (16 to 18GB of RAM). Examples: M4 Mac Mini base costing $699. Previous base iteration costs $599. M4 Pro Mac Mini base comes with 18GB of RAM. I just wish they started with 12 to 16GB of RAM at minimum for the regular M4 Mac Mini.

Hi Matt, what is your opinion about they are reducing performance cores and increasing efficiency cores, for music production scenarios where performance cores are a must and efficiency cores basically do nothing? I mean, for the day by day use many chrome tabs opened, and softwares opened at same time, those eficiency cores could show their streinght, but people that buy Mac Mini will use it at their desktops and probably will go for professional use. Cuz for me now watching the tests I wont get the M3 Pro would preffer to get a M2 Pro.

4k monitors are sub-optimal, as you can only either drive them at 1440p or with unreadable tiny text and and icons in 4k. Now, I think the 1440p is acceptable, but you don't get the same effect or sharpness as 'native' 5k. Good luck

I have to replace my aging MacBook Pro 13" from 2017. I am nor more mobile and already have external peripherals. The M2 model (even also the M1) would be enough for my needs. I will look at the prices of the M4 version. Maybe the M2 versions becomes very cheap. I don't need a new design, but USB ports in the fron would be fine (or then I buy a docking station).

Apple should just leave the same mac mini housing. Why, because the current unit can handle m4 Max cooling. The Mac studio is way over cooling powered for anything less than ultra. Fans hardly come on. Just have Mac Studio for Ultra models and run rest in Mac Mini housing. They can upgrade to cooling in the Mac Mini housing as there is so much more room for that and a bigger fan/fans.

If the cores are more efficient it also means that they are faster as well because of the 3nm design. Intel chips (which Apple used in the past) used higher sized nm cores are hotter and slower and need more powerful fans (noisy) that the M1 to M4 chips.

A Mac Mini with M4 pro and 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD from the Dinosaur age, would be totally ridiculous! I always hate the Mac mini, for not having USB-C at it’s front, no SDXC-Slot and no Displayport for Monitor connection. I would not connect a PC to TV, so I do not need any HDMI on my Mac. I just got an used with M2 pro, to sell my Mac Studio M1 max. So, I will,get a Mac Mini or Studio definitely, because I do love the M4 right now.

The mac mini + display setup locks you in one location, the iMac is useful if you need a whole desktop in the least amount of space possible and the macbook gives you portability, In terms of power, if the chips are the same, and the ram is the same configuration, you will have the exact same performance between all 3 devices

Mac mini plus a display gives you more options than an Imac. Also some use Mac Mini with an Ipad 12.9 as monitor and tablet. Right now the Ipad Pro 12.9 M1 2TB is going refurbished for 800usd on Amazon. That is a very good price. The Samsung S8 Ultra renewed for 540usd is also very appealing (14.6 screen, better screen for content than the Ipad even, and it has a pen). Not only can you use those tablets as monitors for a Mac Mini, you can connect remotely with PARSEC for example and use MacOS on the tablet anywhere that has Internet.

A MacBook is a laptop. There are two models, the Air and the Pro. The Air is powered by the M2 chip in its cheapest form, but can be upgraded to the M3 chip. The iMac is a 24-inch all-in one that is currently powered by the M3 chip. The Mac Mini is an entry-level desktop. The studio display is an expensive 5K monitor that is optimized for use with Apple products.

See, now that my plans have drastically changed recently, I actually wish that the Mac mini (and possibly even that rumored budget laptop) would kind of skip this year for getting a new update. That way those budget level computers can kind of get the iPhone vs iPhone pro treatment (so wait until the M5 chipset is released and THEN release the m4 Mac mini). I know that that is probably a pretty unpopular opinion, but I think that it would lend credence to the “this is our budget lineup” claims.)

My competing computer the Xac mini from xapple only its better because it performs better and has user upgradeable RAM storage CPU and GPU (which is discrete unlike any future apple computer). It even comes with an optical drive and comes with mouse keyboard and speakers included. Dont buy Apple buy Xapple because of this

In 2023 I bought an Mac Mini M2Pro with 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD... the "upgrade" to M4 will be round about 10-15%.. Before an M5 oder M6 or other major new features or advantages ... I won´t change again... This thin rips and has 200GB/s memory bandwidth - the M4 won´t.... NO THNX ;-) I´ll keep my baby...
