Tires won’t prevent that awd system from overheating. That happened way too quickly.

Please take it in the mud and sand and heavy snow too. Just because one may not be able to afford a LandRover should not mean we can’t at least give Subaru, TOYOTA, and others in this size and price category a real challenge. What did the Mazda engineers tell you is at least more practical? This test can be a real deal breaker, and you did the right thing in showing it. I plop down $50-60k for a vehicle this size and versatile, it better climb some hills too. Think of camping or heading off onto a mountain pass or if caught in a hurricane type situation with lots of loose sand and mud as in some states. Thanks.

Considering what this vehicle is designed for & that the overwhelming amount of buyers wouldn't even approach a trail like your hard line I am VERY impressed. I know the camera flattens out the terrain, but judging by that wheel lift & how you're leaning out the window you can tell you where WAAAAY off camber on the hard line test lol

That’s the kind of tests i have been waiting for. Good test! Mazda needs to make it more versatile also, even though the CX90 “appears” more built for highway cruising. They can do it. I try to take a vehicle I have everywhere, like in mud and sand and heavy snow. We need more versatility in that price category.

Have to appreciate the effort Mazda puts in; they definitely punch way above their weight. However, they always seem to self-sabotage somewhere.. I worry this new torque converter-less transmission was a mistake. One of the nicest things about the CX-9 surprisingly is the low speed, stop and go drive-ability. A gem in stop-go traffic. Would love to see the I6 with a conventional auto, minus the hybrid system (new Mazda 6 perhaps?!)

You need AT tires and ground clearance with long wheel base or you will high center the vehicle. Did you ask Dave Coleman why put the timing chain in the back and turn the turbo backwards as it is engine out service for timing chain replacement. Did you notice turbocharger compressor side faces firewall with liquid intercooler on the left side of the engine, starter, intake manifold, 😂 motor mounts and bunch of other services are going to be engine out for CX90 with Mazda inline 6.

Not sure if you mentioned but when offroad mode, you need to turn off Traction Control for the system to work best.

why do Mazda use this self made 8 speed gearbox when the best automatic in the world is the zf 8 speed?...so many manufactures use it...Bentley and RR use it...BMW...ect...just use that...

The lack of momentum is a huge factor. I understand the approach angle and not damaging the car but many of these trails you need more momentum

Oh absolutely. We are running them slow on purpose to test traction aids and mechanical grip. On a normal trail ride, we would go with momentum as long as approach and break over angles would allow it.

Yes we did, this episode was filmed in the same week as the road test, and upcoming technical deep dive. But at low speeds the vibrations were not present.

This vehicle is meant for sport touring not off roading, just on ground clearance and tires alone. That warning chime is so annoying lol. Still a nice Japanese alternative to the BMW variant.

Cx-50 hybrid was supposed to be already announced but they're having trouble staffing the Alabama plant where the cx-50 is made. The announcement is supposed to be delayed until q4 this year with deliveries starting shortly after. I don't know how much of that will hold true with the staffing issues but that's the latest I've read.

Why not just put this body on a frame, add a rear locking differential and a 4wD case with 17 inch rims and some 32 inch AT tires? You’d have an SUV that would compete with a 4Runner.

Totally, we tested that as well in our road test. We also test nearly all SUV/Truck/CUV's vehicles on our off road test for objectivity.

So first we hear how a “2WD vehicle wouldn’t even make it to the obstacle” followed by a 2WD vehicle making it right up to and over the obstacle with no problem.” Maybe time for a tougher obstacle.

Those are two different obstacles we are referring too. The main line 2wd vehicles have a hard time even driving toward, then we have the bypass that is hard to get up with 2wd, and this awd system did well on it.

This is exactly what the cx90 is NOT built for! I have a CX 9 and it's more like a good sized sports wagon like an Audi all road....I tow a Fully enclosed 2 snowmobile trailer in The worst possible conditions tires make more of a difference than AWD systems!! Electronics cannot create traction the tires don't have!! 4 fully studded hakipilletta tires would turn a CRV into a snow cat!😂😂😂

Absolutely true! We test anything that is a CUV, SUV, or Truck on this same hill test for comparative purposes. Yes, even the cx9!

Typically arrogant engineer, using a ridiculous transmission for what is basically a mini van. Except for the Miata they could dissappear tomorrow and no one would notice they were gone. They barely sell any vehicles, much like Subaru. Plus 60k for anything with the Mazda name is insane.
