Mine is exactly like this except in Deep Crystal Blue. As a (now) single empty-nester it is absolutely a daily driver. Under $55k on-road through Motor Scout (recommended!). The special thing with these is being fun at any speed, even the weekly supermarket run. You don't need to be going fast to enjoy, but full-grin when you do. RF is best of both worlds for this use. Nice review! Being 171cm 63kg does help with this car it must be said. For once, it is useful to be a bit smaller than average :)

I took delivery of my 2024 MX-5 RF (Aero Grey Metallic) a month ago and still getting to know it. I was advised to do a “test fit” before even considering buying a MX-5 and glad I did as I am 5’10” (on the old money) and is probably about the maximum height limit. From the video, I could see the top of your head is sticking a bit above the seat head restraint. I can feel the drive through the gear knob and the gearbox is very forgiving, with gear change to be fluid and it must definitely be a manual. Auto is a kill joy, I know as my previous drive was an auto. I can definitely feel steering feedback through the steering wheel and getting used to the Lane Departure Warning, albeit having to adjust my driving style slightly. Driver’s leg room restriction could be because of engine being North-South(starter motor location), whereas the passenger has more. RF is more practical, especially here in WA. It is definitely a driver’s car, which is the reason I bought one. Put a smile on my face, ZOOM ZOOM.

Lovely fun car to drive but I’m 6’ 1” so ended up realising it was too cramped even for a weekender. The RF roof buffeted a bit much. Sold and went to a Porsche 981 Boxster which isn’t as playful but more settled and comfortable on longer trips. I know it won’t be as cheap to run though…

Imagine this with a Yaris GR engine or a daza in it would be a lot of fun
@marcusgeorge18255 ай бұрын
I was thinking the same about having that little 3 cylinder turbo engine. However, it would need some more rubber at the rear to cope with that smack of low torque and would perhaps upset the overall dynamics of the car. Arguably, the naturally aspirated engine is best suited for driver engagement and overall fun factor.

I noticed you short-shifted during your acceleration runs. Fuel cut-off is 7500rpm in 1st and 2nd, then 7200 in 3-6th gear. Fastest times are achieved by shifting right at fuel-cut off.
@drivingenthusiastaustralia5 ай бұрын
@@theinvisible11 Wrong. Peak power is at 7000rpm. Revving it to redline was/is slower. Keep in mind the video is just a video; not a timed run. Vbox testing (around 7 runs) was done off camera so I could concentrate on finding the best time. Figures at the end are my best result of the day.
@theinvisible115 ай бұрын
Peak power is not automatically the best shift point. You are a journalist not an engineer.
@MrPabsify4 ай бұрын
@theinvisible11 Correct. Shifting up at the limit assures that you are closer to peak power in the next gear, as you will shift up at a higher speed, and the car is using it's own gained inertia to get to those last 500 RPMs as power starts to fall from 7k revs. The loss of power from 7k to 7.5k RPMs is small compared to engaging the next gear at lower RPMs. This engine would need a lot more torque to compensate shifting early.
@drivingenthusiastaustralia4 ай бұрын
@@theinvisible11 I'll tried plenty of runs with the Vbox and the best result was shifting at around 7000rpm. Shifting higher caused a slower time. I'll do it again soon and show it on camera - I'll be testing the roadster version in a few weeks.
