I counted multiple ugly goals that each starting goalie allowed but dunno if either goalie was pulled as there had been, during that Memorial Cup final (MCF), a broadcast on Sportsnet of what’d be the final game of the NHL Western Conference final (2-1 win in regulation of the Oilers over the Dallas Stars), with that NHL game one I had wanted to watch even more than the MCF. I likely would’ve watched the 2024 MCF heads or not been a WCF game on that had featured a Canadian team in action. Last weekend’s MCF wasn’t close on shots on goal but on goals it was at 4-3 in regulation. I congratulate the London Knights via having made that game closer than at one point it would appear to end up being, but also the Saginaw Spirit on that win. Just how many of those players on either team that qualified for that MCF end up playing in the NHL remains TBD although Easton Cowan, drafted by the Leafs last June, signed last August an entry-level contract, but with that contract having slid to this coming season as had: - been under age 20 as of last 15 September Eastern Time - not for the Leafs played in a non-preseason game (NPG) Cowan will turn 20 in May 2025, making his ELC eligible to slide to the 2025-26 AHL-CHL-ECHL-NHL season should he play in at most nine NHL NPGs.

I don’t know what it is but I’m never a fan of when a host team wins that didn’t rightfully earn their spot..they get to sit there and rest for weeks typically (sometimes longer) until the other teams scratch and claw through the playoffs and win their league finals most importantly. I’m a Mooseheads fan and said the same thing about them back in 2019 when they almost did this too

Hunter is to blame for this. London came out as "flat" as pancakes in the first period (1 shot on goal???). And their whole season and everything they accomplished went straight down the drain on essentially a "garbage goal" with less than 1 minute left. (that play should have been whistled as it was clear the referee/linesman had lost sight of the puck and the rule are clear that a play ends when they lose sight of the puck)

That's the problem with the Memorial Cup, it's all single game rounds, with the host essentially buying their way into Contention. Yeah, I'm not too big on the host team winning the tournament. I'm a Portland fan, and it was Portland's GM who created the modern format of the tournament, and as hosts they won it that first year. It's weird because they earned a spot the previous year, but lost the in the WHL finals the year they hosted, so they arguably "deserved" to be there, but it really should go to a league champion. Can't really be called the hardest trophy in sports to win when there's a way to win it without even having to win your league. Especially considering the host has home ice advantage for the entire tournament.

It's the hardest trophy to win because you have a limited number of years to compete for it. There are also 60 teams competing across 3 different leagues. The host is not always the host, sometimes they win the league, Peterborough 1996. Guelph went in as host even though the tournament was in Peterborough. I agree, I am not a fan of a non champion, champion.

Someone has to foot the bill to host the tournament which takes many months of prep to host so there's 1 reason why the league champion couldn't be the host no time unless you go off of the previous years champion but then again no owner in the CHL is going to foot the bill and hope that the 3 teams bring enough fans to offset the costs of running the tournament which is 1 reason why the host team is granted a spot. It's not like Saginaw was a bottom feeder team who lucked their way to winning they finished 2 points back of London in the OHL they were the top 2 teams and had same number of wins. even as a host you go into the tournament having not played any competitive games in how long which is not ideal sure you are healthy and rested but that's not always a good thing. Only 12 host teams have won the tournament out of the 41 years the format has been around so theres a good example as to why its not such a bad idea.

Apparently some people think what I said can be argued with. The only relatively legitimate argument is that if a certain league champion is so great, they should be able to win the tournament. But you can throw that out with single elimination, when home ice advantage is involved, and when it's a fluke game winner like we saw last night. Sagina did deserve to win the game, but they lost fair and square against London in their playoff series. So we do know who the better team is. Hosts who didn't earn their spot with a championship get an asterisk. As a fan, if I can discount the '83 Portland team, other host winner's fans can as well.

Yeah I agree with you and I'm a Habs fan really happy with Owen Beck's performance. I guess there's no other way of doing it as the tournament has to be organized in advance and I accept that...but it never made sense to me (and still doesn't) that a team that lost in its own league playoffs is now somehow the champion of Junior Hockey.
