When I train a horse to jump, I keep them under 2’ for a year. This gives them time to build confidence and they learn that they can always go over a jump from a trot, walk or halt, as well as from a canter. Your Mustang looks very athletic, is a cute mover, and with a little more time will undoubtedly make a fancy show pony.

I think it’s so important that they learn to jump from any gait or a standstill! Some horses gain the confidence to jump higher a little sooner but Odyssey is definitely one that benefits from sticking to the lower jumps for longer. He’s a good boy and tries very hard though ❤️

Your boy looks gorgeous---you've brought him so far since last Spring. You and Odyssey will enjoy more successes in the future for having faced this very intimidating challenge.

It’s absolutely blows my mind how ALL these trainers can get these Mustangs to do in such a short time !!! I couldn’t be judge because they ALL are 1st place skilled !!! 💯❤️🐴🙏❤️🇺🇸 Ps Are you going to let your pretty curls grow out ?
@eponamustangsАй бұрын
That’s a great mindset, even making it to the competition is a win! And it means you’ve gotten another horse out of the holding pens and given them a bright future. I am not planning on it :)

So so so much to love in your and Odyssey's experience and rounds and super well done to you for focusing on the good and doing what was best for him, and for not letting the heat of the competition get to you. Seriously well done! I had the feeling a lot of the stangs would have trouble coping with the environment at Kentucky, especially since very few of the riders had likely been there too. It sounds like it was also well planned enough that it was something the judges also understood which is really nice to know. I worried they'd be strict. So sad I didn't get a chance to come watch for a day. Knew a few folks also there at dressage regionals who were pissed about having the stangs competing alongside them. So really hope y'all showed them just how cool and fun and good they are! Thank you so much for sharing. We hope there's another competition again next year!

Thank you very much!! I was impressed by the amount of horses that handled it very well, but yes Odyssey was not the only one who had troubles entering the stadium alone with the spooky elements in it. The judges have all judged enough green horses to know that the mustangs are no different than a domestic 4-5 year old that can also get worked up over the same things the mustangs were scared of. Even olympic level horses get scared of photographers at times haha That’s disappointing as all we did was walk by their rings to get from our barns to the show ring and try not to get in their way. I made sure to compliment their gorgeous horses whenever I passed one! Most of them were very nice and thought Odyssey was cute. I was hoping they’d be impressed by how fancy and well behaved all the mustangs were and start to unlearn the false stereotype about mustangs

@@eponamustangs we hope so too! the one person we've talked to so far said they had no real interactions with them, just saw them in passing and they looked cute. which honestly? isn't much but it is a much better attitude than she started with before going. so that's something. and honestly those photographers being there being scary is SO valid.

your lower leg is so stable it’s actually insane. any tips?
@eponamustangsАй бұрын
Aww thank you :) I struggled with it a couple years back so I did a lot of no stirrups while making sure I wasn’t pinching in my knees to stay on. It takes some working up to in order to make sure you’re not bouncing and making them sore. I also ride bareback a lot and do both english and western as I think all of those contribute to having a better seat. And working on core strength out of the saddle has improved everything in my riding

congratulations, good job with a green horse, was lovely to see how you treated your horse with kindness.
@eponamustangsАй бұрын
Thank you!! I try to see things through their eyes, you can’t blame a horse for being scared especially one who spent 5 years watching out 24/7 for mountain lions being asked to go into a stadium and trot by photographers/jump obstacles 😆❤️
